WILLIAM1 SANDERS was born in the north of Ireland about 1812-3, and died at LeRoy Township, Mower County, Minnesota, on 6 November 1884. He married first CYNTHIA O'DELL. She was born perhaps at New York or Ireland perhaps about 1830-1, and died at LeRoy Township on 18 July 1873. William married second before 1880 SARAH ________ . She was born at Ohio about 1830-1.[1]
The fullest description of the life of William Sanders, which I have found, is his obituary, which appeared in the Mower County Transcript on 12 November 1884:[2]
Died--William Sanders, Sr., of LeRoy township, died of Abscess of the Lungs, at midnight on Thursday evening of this week. He was in his seventy-third year, born of Scotch parentage in the north of Ireland, from where they removed to Belfast, Scotland, when he was quite young, and from which place he emigrated to America, when he was eighteen years old. He has ever been a healthy, robust person until his recent illness of which he has been prostrated several weeks. He moved into this township twenty-one years ago from Wisconsin, in limited circumstances, but by frugality and general good management of his business affairs, acquired a large well stocked farm so that he was in comfortable circumstances. He leaves a widow, and six children by a former wife, three boys and three girls, all but two of whom have passed their minority. He was a man of the strictest integrity and ever prided himself in fulfilling his agreements to the letter.

Census records present a confusing picture of the birth places and ages of William and Cynthia Sanders. Begining in 1850 the United States census lested each person, with their age and state or country of birth. Beginning in 1880 the census also noted the birth place of the parents of each person. These records reported the following:[3]
event | date | age | birthplace | age | birthplace |
Census | 1 June 1860 | 40 | Scotland | 40 | Scotland |
Census | 1 June 1870 | 53 | Scotland | 39 | New York |
Census | 1 June 1880 | 69 | Ireland
Census (son William) | 1 June 1880 | Scotland | Scotland
obituary | 6 November 1884 | 73d year | northern Ireland
Census (son John) | 1 June 1900 | Ireland | Ohio
Census (daughter Cynthia) | 1 June 1900 | Ohio | Ohio
Census (son John) | 15 April 1910 | Ireland | Wisconsin
Census (son John) | 1 January 1920 | Ireland | Ohio
Death Record (daughter Cynthia) | 23 April 1945 | Belfast, Ireland | Ireland |
Three factors can contribute to this confusion. 1) Census takers may have atributed to a spouse the birthplace of the husband, not thinking that they might be different. 2) Being of Scottish descent from Ireland, and coming to America at a time when the Irish faced serious discrimination, the Sanders family might have felt it necessary to distance themselves from the other Irish, by calling themselves Scottish. 3) When asked for their mother's birthplace, some interviewees may automatically think of their step-mother. The step-mother of the children was born in Ohio. The obituary affirms that William was born of Scottish descent in the north of Ireland. The age indicated in the obituary is consistent with the age reported in the 1880 Census. With regards to Cynthia, if we discount the times when she is given the same birth-place as her husband, and the times the respondent may have indicated their step-mother's birth place, we are left with the 1870 Census identification of New York (and possibly the 1910 Census identification of Wisconsin). New York then becomes our best guess. Remarkably, after the passage of ten years, from 1860 to 1870, Cynthia was one year younger! (Do we all wish we could do that!). If the age reported in 1860 were correct, Cynthia would have given birth to her last child at the age of forty-nine, which is not probable. If the age reported in the 1870 Census is correct, then her first child was born when she was twenty-four, and her last child when she was thirty-eight, which is more probable. So the best guess for her birth date in 1830-1. Cynthia's maiden name is given only in her daughter Cynthia's death record in 1945.
Based on the obituary, William Sanders came to America from Belfast about 1838-9. I have not, with any degree of confidence, been able to identify him in the 1840 or 1850 censuses. Their first child was born about 1856-7, which points to their marriage probably by 1856, when William would have been forty-four, and Cynthia twenty-six. The 1860 Census reported this family farming at Armenia Township (Necedah Post Office), Juneau County, Wisconsin, consisting of William and Cynthia, and two sons, William and James.[4]
According to the obituary, the family moved to Mower County about 1863. This agrees with the ages and places of birth of the children. The 1870 Census reported the family at LeRoy Township (LeRoy Station Post Office), Mower County, as follows:[5]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |
14. | Saunders, William | 53 | M | W | farmer | $1000 | $1300 | Scotland |

The names Sanders and Saunders are oftren confused; this family, which always called itself Sanders, was sometimes called by others Saunders.
Cynthia, wife of William Sanders, died in 1873, leaving William with children aged 17, 13, 10, 9, 5 and 4. William remarried sometime before the next census, in 1880, which reported the family at LeRoy Township as follows:[6]

Son William, 23, lived nearby (on the same page of the census), where he boarded with the family of Alice Plummer and worked as a laborer.[7]
In the next few years this family changed rapidly. James married in 1882; Eliza married in 1884. William Sanders died in 1884, leaving two minor children with their step-mother. James died in 1888, at the age of twenty-eight. John married in 1889. William, Junior, died in 1890; he was found dead at an establishment called the "Blind Pig"; he died from heart failure caused by a drunken spree.[8] Cynthia married in 1890 and Eva married in 1894.
William Sanders and his first wife Cynthia had the following children:[9]
JOHN RANDOLPH2 SANDERS (William1) was born at LeRoy Township on 8 October 1867 a son of William and Cynthia Sanders . He died at Lansford, Bottineau County, North Dakota, on 26 July 1926. He married about 1888-9 ELIZABETH PETERSON. She was born at Grand Meadow, Mower County, on 15 July 1870, a daughter of John Peterson and his wife Johanna Christinsen. She died at Ward County, North Dakota, on 20 March 1958.[10]
John Sanders and Elizabeth Peterson both grew up on farms in Mower County. Elizabeth was the first of four children of Danish immigrants. John was the fifth of six children of a Scotch-Irish father. When John was five years old his mother died. At some point during the next seven years he acquired a step-mother; when he was seventeen his father died.
John and Elizabeth were 21 and 19 respectively when they married. The 1900 Census found them in the village of Grand Meadow. At that time the family consisted of John, 32, Lizzie, 29, Lilia, 10, Bernice, 8, Merle, 6, and Donovan, 1. John was a day laborer.[11]
This family moved to North Dakota be 1903, based on the birth places of the children. The 1910 Census reported a family of eight children living in Waterford Township, Ward County, North Dakota:[12]

John and Elizabeth continued to farm in Waterford township and continued having children. The 1920 Census reported the following:[13]

Harold, Elizabeth, Kenneth and Shirley were all attending school. Although the record stated that wife Elizabeth and eldest daughter Lelia had no occupation, it is easy to speculate that both were very busy maintaining the house and raising the rest of the family. Bernice, 27, had married in 1912 and lived in nearby Minot, Ward County, with her husband, Ludwig Sonnenberg, 27, who worked for the railroad, and two children, Elmer, 3, and Robert, 1.[14] Merle, 25, had married probably in December of 1915 (date of marriage license), and lived in Waterford Township with her husband, Ben Nelson, 26, farmer, and their children Donald, 3, and Burton, 1.[15] I have no further record of Harriet, reported as a daughter in 1910.
John Sanders died in 1926. Meanwhile the children were marrying at the rate of about one a year. Lelia married about 1924-5, Donovan about 1925-6, Harold about 1926-7 and Elizabeth about 1927-8. The 1930 Census found the family scattered into several households as follows.
The 1940 Census reported about half the family near their family home, and about half scattered:
Elizabeth (Peterson) Sanders died in 1958 at the age of eighty-seven.
John Sanders and his wife Elizabeth Peterson had the following children:
