Descendants of John George Bauer
of Lancaster, Pennsylvania
also known as John Todd
of Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Second Generation

BERTHA2 BAUER (John1) was born at Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 25 February 1871 a daughter of John George Bauer and his first wife Sarah Harman. She died at Lancaster on 7 September 1952.[1] She married at Lancaster County on 20 August 1891 PETER J. DOMMEL.[2] He was born at Lancaster on 19 August 1869, a son of Peter Dommel and Eliza Showers. He died at Lancaster on 29 December 1947.[3]

When Bertha Bauer was thirteen years old, her parents separated. Her mother was soon in jail for the crime of adultery, and the following year her parents divorced. It is not clear what happened to Bertha at this point. When Bertha was sixteen her father remsrried. When Bertha married at the age of twenty, Samuel Clark, guardian ad litum, gave his consent.

Peter and Bertha Dommel lived at various addresses in Lancaster, and soon had a growing family. Peter was described as a cigar maker on his wedding record on 1891 and the 1900 census, a buyer of tobacco in 1910, laborer in a bottling works in 1920, and tobacco packer in a tobacco warehouse in 1930.[4]

The 1910 Census reported the almost complete Peter Dommel family at 829 New Fifth Street as follows:[5]

This record further reported that Paul and Bertha had been married 14 years, that Bertha had given birth to seven children, all of whom were living, and that Sarah and Fletcher were both attending school. An eighth child, Paul, was born in 1913.

Eldest son Harry married in 1912. When he signed up for the draft in 1917 he reported that he was a laborer at Armstrong Cork Company, Lancaster. He was medium height, medium build, with brown eyes, and dark brown hair.[6] In 1920 he was a dryer in a linolium plant; in 1930 he worked in the plate room at Waters Company.[7] Harry's wife Beulah died in 1936. Elmer Dommel appears to have married Ida Emily (Reynolds) Singleton perhaps early in 1916. Ida, of York County, had married Lawrence Elwood Singleton while she was a teen-ager, and by the time she was twenty they had three children. On 26 September 1915, Ida's husband and her brother, Roy Reynolds, got into a fight while on the road. Roy punched Lawrence, he fell and broke his neck and died.[9] Roy was tried for the murder of his brother-in-law and acquitted.[10] Nevertheless, Ida had been made a twenty year old widow with three children. Within a few months, Ida and Elmer Dommel were together.

Elmer Dommel enlisted in the Army on 21 April 1916. Soon shipped to France when the United States entered World War I, Elmer, a corporal of Company F, 18th Infantry, died in action on 30 May 1918. His name is inscribed on a Wall of Remembrance at the Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France; no recognizable remains of his body were ever recovered.[11]

Elmer and Ida's child, also named Elmer Dommel, was born in October 1916, while Elmer was in the Army. Ida, at the age of 24, had now been widowed twice, and had four children. She had a fifth child about 1918-9. The 1920 census reported Ida Singleton and her first four children living with her parents, Harry and Arthur Reynolds, at Peach Bottom, York County. She went by the name "Ida Singleton" the rest of her life.[12] The 1930 Census reported Ida and her five children at Lancaster, where Ida, 36, worked as a stripper in a tobacco factory, son James Singleton, 19, worked as a header in a doll factory, Howard Singleton, 18, was a boxer at a candy factory, and the other three children were in school.[13]

The 1940 Census reported Ida Singleton at Lancaster with three of her children and a grandchild. Ida, 46, worked as a stemmer of tobacco. Son Ralph Singleton, 29, was a pressman for bearings. Son Elmer Dommel, 23, was a soldier in the United States Army. Daughter Catherine, 20, now married and called Catherine Alexander, was the homemaker. Granddaughter June Dommel, evidently a child of Elmer, was 4.[14] The younger Elmer Dommel served in the United States Army from 29 March 1939 to 22 July 1945, with an overseas tour in the Pacific from 21 July 1942 to 13 July 1945.[15]

Ida Singleton died in 1975. In her obituary, Elmer Dommel is called Elmer Singleton:[16]

Born in Flintville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Young Reynolds. She resided in Lancaster most of her life and was employed as a hemmer by Polan and Katz until her retirement in 1965.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Singleton is survived by one daughter, Katherine A., wife of Raymond E. Martin, Lancaster, and four sons, Elmer B. Singleton, Franklin L. Singleton, Lancaster, H. Wilton Singleton, Nokomus, Fla.; and J. Ralph, Hellam, Pa.

She is also survived by two brothers, Warren R Reynolds and Arthur C. Reynolds, Lancaster; and two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Urey, Airville, and Mrs. Blanche Burke, Red Lion.
