Descendants of John George Bauer
of Lancaster, Pennsylvania
also known as John Todd
of Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Second Generation

ADA RUTH2 TODD (John 1) was born at Downingtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 17 September 1910 a daughter of John George Bauer, a.k.a. John Todd, and his third wife Mary Ellen Kurtz.[1] She died on 24 September 2004, her last residence was Downingtown.[2] She married on 16 January 1933 EARL ARNOLD WALTON.[3] He was born at Pennsylvania on 10 January 1909, a son of Clifton M. Walton and his wife Mary E. Lindsley.[4] He died on 6 July 1981, his last residence was Downingtown.[5]

When Ada was born her father was 60, her mother 39. When she was 13 her mother died, and when she was 21 her father died. However she was not raised by her parents. She remembered living in her childhood with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Simpkins.[6] I have not been able to find Ada or the Simpkins in the 1920 Census. In 1930 Ada Todd was living in the home of John and Flora Haas, in Downingtown. Ada's relationship to the family was that she was a "ward." At age 19, Ada worked as a factory girl in a box factory.[7]

Ada Todd and Earl Walton married in 1933, and she gave birth to her only child the following year. The 1940 Census described them as follows:[8]

Line Name Related Sex Race Age MS Ed B 1935 Residence Occupation
51. Walton, Earl A. head M W 31 M H3 PA same place pattern maker, paper mill mach
52. Walton, Ada R. wife F W 29 M H1 PA same place housework
53. Walton, Allen E. son M W 6 S 0 PA same place

Other information provided by the census record: Earl rented their home for $27/month. He worked 50 weeks the previous year for an income of $1500. Allen was in school, but had not yet completed a grade.

Earl and Ada lived in Downingtown throughout their lives; Earl continued to work as a pattern maker. Son Allen Walton and his wife Mary were both hair stylists.[9] Her obituary provides more information on the family:[10]

Mary Frances (Zell) Sigle, 82, of Lancaster, formerly of Downingtown, passed away Friday May 4th surrounded by her beloved family. She was a wonderful and special wife, mother and friend. Mary was born in Paradise, Pa in 1936. Once she graduated from Honey Brook high school she pursued a career as a cosmetologist and hairdresser; a vocation that would last 46 years. She was a member of the Downingtown United Methodist Church for many years until relocating to Lancaster at which time she became a member of Georgetown United Methodist Church, Lancaster County. Mary enjoyed her numerous activities as a member of the Downingtown VFW, Ladies Auxiliary and St. Anthony’s Lodge. She was pre-deceased by her first husband Allen E. Walton and her second husband Melvin R. Sigle. Mary was one of 15 children. She is survived by her daughters Jacqueline E. Oswald wife of Joel Oswald of Pleasantville, Pa and Nancy M. Fortna wife of Joe K. Fortna of Quarryville. Mary was the grandmother of Patricia Manning, Lisa Piombino, Ashley Fortna, Jennifer Bowman, Jeffrey Bowman and Justin Wiggins as well as a great grandmother of Logan DeHaven, Hanna Manning, Shannon Bowman, Bryce Copora, Leaina Copora, Lillian and Chole Bowman. She was the great great grandmother of Payton Elizabeth Bowman. Mary is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews. . . .
