LEWIS AUSTIN8 BLANCHARD (Stephen7, Adam6-5, John4-3, Nathaniel2, Thomas1) was born at Abington, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 1 December 1820 a son of Stephen Blanchard and his first wife Laura Vining, and died at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, on 17 May 1890. He published at Randolph, Norfolk County, on 17 October 1841 his intentions to marry LYDIA HOLLIS. She was born at Randolph on 2 October 1827, a daughter of Ambrose Hollos and his first wife Lydia Hollis. She died at Abington on 13 March 1906.[1]
Lewis Blanchard, the first born child of Stephen Blanchard, spent the first years of his life in Abington. When Lewis was five years old his mother died, leaving his father with three small children. Six months later his father remarried, and the family moved to Weymouth. There his half-brother was born when Lewis was nine. Stephen Blanchard was a farmer.
Lydia Hollis grew up in Randolph, where his father worked as a boot maker. The only record I have of any siblings is an older brother who died before she was born. However the 1830 Census indicated two older female children in the household, one between 5 and 9, the other between 15 and 19.[2] At some point in Lydia's childhood her mother died, for her father remarried when Lydia was twelve years old. The census that year reported three children in the household; in addition to Lydia there was a female 15-19 and a male 5-9.[3] Whether they are children of her father, her step-mother, or other, I cannot determine.
The year after the second marriage of Lydia's father, Lydia married. Lydia was fourteen years old when she married; Lewis was twenty.
Randolph, Massachusetts, became a major center of the shoe making industry, providing over half of the boots worn by Union Army soldiers in the Civil War. This industry gave employment to Lewis Blanchard, and to many other members of the extended family over many years to come.
The first child of Lydia and Lewis died eight months after birth; their second child lived seven months. After this difficult start, the couple had seven more children, six of whom lived to adulthood. Lydia's first child was born when she was seventeen years old, her last child when she was thirty-seven.
The 1850 Census reported Lewis Blanchard, 29, bootmaker, Lydia, 22, Lawrence, 1, and Lydia, one month, at Randolph.[4] The 1855 state census reported an additional chld, Charles, then two years old, in the family.[5] The 1860 Census reported the family at Randolph, East Randolph Post Office. East Randophh is that section of Randolph that was incorporated as Holbrook in 1872. That census record reported the following:[6]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace |
5. | Lewis A. Blanchard | 39 | M | boot maker | MA
6. | Lydia Blanchard | 32 | F | MA
7. | Lawrence A. Blanchard | 11 | M | MA
8. | Lydia E. Maxfield | 10 | F | MA
9. | Charles A. Maxfield | 7 | M | MA
10. | Sarah J. Maxfield | 4 | F | MA
11. | Mary A. Maxfield | 1 | F | MA |
The census also noted that the four oldest children were in school.
In the decade of the sixties two more children was born, and one, Lydia, married. The family had moved to Weymouth, perhaps before the birth of their last child in 1864, where Lewis was reported as a laborer in 1870 and a farm laborer in 1880. The 1870 Census reported the family at Weymouth, South Braintree Post Office, as follows:[7]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |
26. | Blanchard, Lewis A. | 49 | M | W | laborer | $1400 | $200 | MA |
27. | Blanchard, Lydia | 43 | F | W | keeping house | MA
28. | Blanchard Lawrence A. | 21 | M | W | works for boot factory | MA
29. | Blanchard, Charles A. | 17 | M | W | works for boot factory | MA
30. | Blanchard, Sarah J. | 14 | F | W | at home | MA
31. | Blanchard, Mary A. | 11 | F | W | attending school | MA
32. | Blanchard, Joseph E. | 8 | M | W | attending school | MA
33. | Blanchard, Lewis R. | 6 | M | W | attending school | MA |
"Joseph E." is a mistake for Josephine, who was female. Although Sarah was not listed as attending school in the occupation column, her name was checked in the column for having attended school in the past year, as were the younger children. Immediately after this household, in the same dwelling, the census reported their daughter, Lydia (Blanchard) Tirrell, and her family:[8]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |
34. | Tirrell, Major | 27 | M | W | works in boot factory | $100 | MA
35. | Tirrell, Lydia E. | 20 | F | W | keeping house | MA
36. | Tirrell, Eva J. | 3 | F | W | at home | MA |
The decade of the 1870s brought much change. In 1872 Josephine died, at the age of ten, from scrofula. Lawrence married in 1873, Sarah and Charles in 1874, and Mary Ann in 1879. The 1880 Census reported the Lewis Blanchard family at Weymouth.[9] Their youngest child, Lewis, was still at home, as was son Charles and his family; daughter Mary Adah and her family were listed at the next residence. Son Lawrence and daughter Sarah Jane both lived in Weymouth with their families; daughter Lydia lived in nearby Holbrook with her family:

It's unclear to me how Thomas Derby is related; he is not the father of Lydia (Hollis) Blanchard. The next household on the census record is:[10]

In the column for entering the month of birth for anyone born in the past year, the census taker wrote after Mary A. "Aug" which would be the month of her marriage within the past year. Elsewhare in Weymouth the 1880 Census reported:[11]

What emerges from all of these records is the picture of a middle aged couple living close to their six living children and twelve grandchildren, dependent on the local factories for their livelihood.
Youngest son Lewis married in 1883. Father Lewis died in 1890 from Bright's Disease.[14]
By 1900 Lydia (Hollis) Blanchard was living with her daughter Lydia (Blanchard) Tirrell at Abington. Lydia, the mother, died there in 1906 from heart disease.[15]
Lewis Blanchard and his wife Lydia Hollis had the following children:
