William Wright Collins and Selina Hibbert, Immigrants
and some of their Descendants
Second Genration

LOUISA2 COLLINS (William1) was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, on 30 December 1850, a daughter of William Wright Collins and his wife Selina Hibbert. She died at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 22 July 1934. She married at Pawtucket on 26 November 1869 THOMAS BRIDEN. He was born at Ashton-under-Lyne on 15 April 1848, a son of Samuel and Hannah Briden. He died at Pawtucket on 1936.[1]

Louisa Collins and Thomas Briden were born at Ashton-under-Lyne, about two and a half years apart. The 1851 Census record for Thomas' family is faded and difficult to read, as best as I can make it out, it reads as follows (I have placed a question mark in the place of words I could not distinguish):[2]

Name relation M. S. Sex Age Occupation Birthplace
Samuel Bryden head married M 40 cotton spinner Lancashire
Hannah Bryden wife married F 39 Scotland, Leith
John Bryden son unmarried M 19 [?] cotton Cheshirer, Newton
Walter Bryden son unmarried M 15 cotton [?] Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne
Samuel Bryden son unmarried M 12 scholar Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne
Robert Bryden son unmarried M 9 scholar Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne
Thomas Bryden son unmarried M 2 Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne
Sarah Bryden daughter unmarried F 1 Lancashire, Ashton-under-Lyne
Hannah Pollitt mother-in-law widow F 67 [?]

Thomas was the fifth of six children living in the home at that time. The family earned its living from the cotton textile industry.

Three years later the family migrated to America, leaving from Liverpool on the Adriatic, and arriving at New York City, New York, on 5 July 1854. The ship's manifest listed Samuel Bryden, 43, Hannah, 43, Samuel, 13, Robert, 11, Thomas, 6, and Sarah, 4. After each name the manifest listed occupation as spinner, place of origin England and destination Rhode Island.[3] The oldest two sons and the mother-in-law were not part of this migration.

Louisa Collins, the third of 5 children, came to America with her family at the age of nine, in 1859.

In the 1860 Census, Louisa (called "Lorida" by the census taker), age nine, and Thomas, age twelve, both lived at Smithfield, Providence County, with their families. There were twelve persons in Thomas' household, thirteen in Louisa's. Thomas' family follows:[4]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
24. Samuel Boyden 49 M watchman $ 150 $ 125 England
25. Hannah Boyden 49 F England
26. Samuel Boyden, Jr. 20 M weaver England
27. Robert Boyden 18 M cotton spinner England
28. Thomas Boyden 12 M England
29. Sarah Boyden 10 F England
30. John Boyden 28 M laborer England
31. Jane Boyden 20 F England
32. Walter J. Boyden 2/12 M RI
33. James Robinson 31 M weaver England
34. John Kinder 30 M weaver England
35. Robert Aiken 45 M cotton spinner England

The record also indicated that Thomas and Sarah were attending school. The family had been rejoined by eldest son John, his wife, and their new child. The family derived their living from the textile industry. Their surname, not a common name, experienced numerous spellings.

Thomas and Louisa married in 1868, Congregational pastor James Lyons presiding. The marriage record called Thomas a moulder.[5] Usually spelled molder the term refers to someone who makes molds, often in an iron foundry. The 1870 Census reported the Thomas Briden family at Smithfield, listed immediately after Thomas' parents, who no longer had any children at home. Thomas, 22, was working in a furnace, Lousa, 20, was keeping house, and caring for their nine-month-old son William.[6]

Thomas and Louisa had a second child, Carrie, in 1876; she lived twenty-one month and died of pneumonia.[7] The 1880 Census found Thomas Briden, 32, machinist, and Louisa Briden, 29, in Pawtucket, living with her widowed father, William Collins, 55, machinist, her brother Joseph Collins, 23, machinist, and their children, William Briden, 10, and Charles Briden [census taker's error, his name was Chester], ten months.[8]

The 1900 Census reported Thomas and Louisa Briden at 828 North Main Street, Pawtucket. Thomas was working as a stationary engineer. Younger son Chester, 20, was still at home.[9] Elder son William had married in 1891 and lived at 829 North Main Street, Pawtucket, with his wife Carrie and three children.[10] In 1908 Thomas Briden was described as a retired engineer serving as a license commissioner.[11]

The 1910 Census reported Thomas Briden, 62, retired, and Louise, 59, at 847 North Main Street, Pawtucket.[12] Next door, at 849 North Main, lived their son William Briden, 40, his wife Carrie, 31, and their three children.[13] Son Chester, who had married in 1905, lived at 903 North Main Street, with his wife Helen, 22, daughter Louise, eighteen months, and mother-in-law Ella Stickney, widow, 60.[14]

The great influenza epidemic of 1918 severely crushed the family of William Briden, Thomas and Louisa's son. On 4 October 1918 William's wife Carrie died; the following day their son-in-law Fred Cory Myers died; five days later their daughter Mildred (Briden) Myers died. Death records did not always use the word influenza. Carrie's death was attributed to "acute pneumonia" and "Lagrippe." Fred's death record read the same; Mildred's death record read "acute lobar pneumonia; influenza."[15] These are all descriptions of the symptoms of the influenza. Meanwhile, while his mother sister and brother-in-law were dying, Raymond Briden was fighting in France. Raymond served from 12 February 1917 to 28 April 1919 in the 101st battalion Engineers. When the war was over, his unit left Brest, France on 27 March 1919 and arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on 4 April 1919.[16]

In 1920, Thomas and Louisa Briden, ages 70 and 69 respectively, still lived at 847 North Main.[17] Listed immediately before them in the census was grandson Raymond Briden, recently returned from war and married. Raymond, 25, worked as a designer for a cotton mill; his wife Bertha was bookkeeper for a grocery store.[18] Widower William Briden, 50 -son of Louise and father of Raymond - lived at 849 North Main with his other son William, 20. The older William was a clerk at city hall, the younger William was clerk for a machine shop.[19] Chester Briden, 38, son of Thomas and Louise, lived at 903 North Main, with his wife Helen, 33, daughter Louise, 11, and mother-in-law Ella Stickner, 73. Chester was manager of a dye works.[20]

William Briden, Sr., remarried about 1920-21. He was about 60 years old, his new bride, Lillie Davis, was about 43. William Briden Jr., married about 1921-2. He was about 22 years old, his bride Ruth Baldwin was about 18. Raymond Briden, the veteran, had married after his return from War in 1919, then his wife died in 1921 from puerperal septicemia, after giving birth to their daughter.[21] He married again about 1925-6.

The 1930 Census found Thomas and Louisa Briden, ages 82 and 79 respectively, residing at their home at 847 North Main Street.[22] Next door at 849 North Main were William and Lillie Briden, ages 60 and 52 respectively. William was secretary to the Board of Commissioners of the city; Lillie had come to America from England when she was six years old.[23] Chester Briden, 50, had moved to East Providence, where he lived with his wife, Helen, 42, daughter, Louise, 21, and mother-in-law Ella Stickney, 79. Chester was president of a bleachery.[24] Raymond Briden, 35, lived at 22 Nathaniel Avenue, Pawtucket, with his wife Althea, 34, and daughter by his first wife, Mildred, 9. Raymond worked as a designer for a cotton mill.[25] The younger William Briden, who called himself W. Earle Briden on this census report, lived at 475 Broadway, Pawtucket, with his wife Ruth and their daughter Pauline. W. Earle was a letter carrier for the United States mail.[26]

Louisa (Collins) Briden died at home in 1934, at the age of eighty-three, from arteriosclerosis and senility.[27] Thomas died two years later.

The death of son Chester Briden was reported in the Boston Globe in 1953:[28]

Chester H. Briden

Pawtucket, Feb. 14 (AP)--Chester H. Briden, 73, retired president of the Eureka Bleach & Dye Company, of Pawtucket, died today at Martha's Vineyard Hospital, Oak Bluffs, Mass., where he had been a seasonal resident for 26 years.

Briden sold his interest in the Pawtucket bleachery in 1939.

The obituary of great-grandson Charles R. Briden appeared in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota Argus Leader in 2017:[29]
