JOHN PHINEAS KING8 HATHAWAY (David7, Love6, Savory5, Simon4, Arthur3, John2, Arthur1) was born at Wareham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 11 October 1828 a son of David Hathaway and his wife Sarah King,[1] and died there on 3 September 1892.[2] He married at Wareham on 1 January 1851 LYDIA MARIE BUMPUS.[3] She was born at Wareham on 27 October 1834, a daughter of Hiram Smith Bumpus and his wife Lydia Curtis Shurtelff. She died at Rochester, Plymouth County, on 14 December 1916.[4]

John P. K. Hathaway and his wife Lydia Bumpus were both born and grew up in Wareham. John was the third of ten children, Lydia was the third of five. John was 22, Lydia 16, when they married.

The 1870 Census reported their completed family as follows:[5]

John Hathaway is described as a machinist in every census in which he appears as an adult. Lydia and Hiram married in 1878. Son John had moved out, and at the time of the 1880 census was boarding in another home in Wareham and working as a nailer.[6] The parental home was reporeted in 1880 as follows: J. P. K., 51, machinist, Lydia, 45, keeps house, Harriet, 28, at home, Adiel, 16, works in iron works, David, 12, at school.[7] Granddaughter Dorothy (Hathaway) Lang shared her memories of her aunts and uncles in an interview in 1984: Harriet was a small woman, like her mother; Hiram was tall; Melora was a big buxom woman; David was short, had a bright red mustache and wore glasses.[8]

Adiel married in 1889, Harriet in 1890. David married in 1892, less than three months after their father's death. After the death of Harriet's husband, she returned to live with her mother. The 1900 Census reported the two widows, Lydia Hathaway, 65, and her daughter, Hattie Fuller, 48, at Wareham.[9] In 1910 they were still there living together.[10]

Lydia (Bumpus) Hathaway died in 1916 at the age of 82, having gangrene in the left foot for three months.[11] In 1921 daughter Harriet remarried.

Harriet married twice. The first marriage lasted six years before her husband's death. Eldorus "Dode" Fuller was a gas fitter.[12] After twenty-five years of widowhood, Hattie married Irving "Stubby" Seiver. She died seven years later. Harriet had no children.

Son John Hathaway married for the first time at the age of forty-one. His thirty-nine year old bride had been previously married, and brought to their family a fourteen year old daughter. John, reported as a nailor in 1880, had become a railroad conductor by 1895,[13] and was living at Hyannis, Barnstable, Barnstable County. There the 1900 Census found him, age 45, with his wife, 40, step-daughter, 19, and mother-in-law, Adeline Nickerson, 74. According to that census, his wife, Mary, had two children.[14] John Hathaway died in a railroad accident at Brockton, Plymouth County, in 1907. According to the death record he then resided at Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston, was a freight conductor, and died from fracture of the chest with penetration of the pericardium.[15] His widow, Mary, died five years later, at Boston, with breast cancer, which she had for two years.[16]

Hiram Hathaway and his wife Susan lived at Wareham in 1880,[17] Fairhaven, Bristol County, in 1900,[18] in Wareham again in 1910.[19] Each census reported Hiram as a machinist; in 1910 he was machinist for a horse shoe mill. Hiram and Susan had three children. Flora was born the year of their marriage. Their second child, Mildred, was born eleven and a half years after their first. John came along three years after Mildred, five months before Flora's marriage. When Susan died in 1915 they were living at Whitman, Plymouth County; she died from acute tubercular meningitis.[20] The 1920 Census reported Hiram living with his son at Whitman, and working as a machinist in a shoe factory.[21] Dorothy (Hathaway) Lang recalled that Hiram in his last years worked on the end of Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven, for some people who raised shellfish on the flats. He helped them and sold the shellfish. One day he went to New Bedford and dropped dead on the street.[22]

Hiram's daughter Mildred in 1910, age 20, worked as a servant in the home of Deborah Casewell of Middleboro, Plymouth County.[23] She married in 1913, and was reported in the next two censuses in Central Falls, Providence County, Rhode Island, where her husband, Herbert Northup, worked as a motorman [street car conductor].[24] She died at the age of forty with lobar pneumonia and endocarditis,[25] leaving her husband with their seventeen year old daughter.

Hiram's son John lived at Whitman and worked as a plumber.[26]

Lydia Melora Hathaway, known as Melora, or simply "Lora", married Alfred Shaw when she was seventeen and he was thirty. Reported as a grocer in 1880, by 1900 Alfred had become a cranberry grower, and they prospered. They lived in Carver all their lives, and raised two children.[27]

Lora's son, Alfred, Junior, married when he was thirty-six, and his bride was twenty. He worked on his father's farm as a young boy, but was reported in 1920 as a foreman for state forestry.[28] Alfred, Jr., died at the age of forty one, leaving his thirty-two year old wife with children ages eight, seven, and five. She remarried the following year. Her second husband, Rodney Griffith, worked as foreman on a cranberry farm; Marion taught school.[29]

Lora's second child, Adalieta, went to college and became a physician. She married another physician, Charles Alexander Eaton, who according to the 1910 census was a lecturer in pathology. They were reported in 1910 living at Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts,[30] and in 1930 at Boston.[31] By 1940 they had retired to his boyhood home of Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where they remained until their deaths.[32]

David Hathaway worked as a locomotive engineer; the family moved several times. Their first child was born at Middleboro in 1894, their second at Taunton in 1898, and that is where the 1900 Census found the family.[33] In 1910 they resided at Brockton, Plymouth County,[34] in 1920 at Easton, Bristol County.[35] The next two censuses found them at Hyannis on Cape Cod.[36] David's wife, Emma, died at Norwood, Norfolk County, in 1949; he died at Canton, Norfolk County, in 1950. Their only child to live past infancy, Avis, married Charles Erving and they, lived at Canton, where Charles worked as an accountant for the railroad in 1930[37] and a chemist for a textile company in 1940.[38]
