LYDIA EMELINE10 HATHAWAY (Adiel9, John8, David7, Love6, Savory5, Simon4, Arthur3. John2, Arthur1) was born at Fairhaven, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 16 July 1890 a daughter of Adiel H. Hathaway and his wife Julia Reed,[1] and died at Hyannis, Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on 28 June 1964.[2] She married at Fairhaven on 12 November 1912 LEROY ASHTON DUNHAM.[3] He was born at Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 19 September 1889, a son of Leonard F. and Azuba S. (Hammond) Dunham. He died at Pocasset, Bourne, Barnstable County, on 26 May 1952.[4]
As a young woman Lydia Hathaway worked as a milliner, and lived on Myrtle Street in Taunton. That is where she met Leroy "Roy" Dunham, who also lived on that street.[5] Lydia moved back to her parents' home in Fairhaven, and in 1912 she circulated a petition on Sconticut Neck, asking the Selectmen of Fairhaven to get electric lights on the Neck[6] (Electricity did not reach the neighborhood until the 1920s).
Roy moved to Sandwich, Barnstable County, where he worked as a foreman in the Sandwich Freezer, which froze and stored locally caught fish. Daughter Doris reported: "He used to tell about walking from Sandwich to Fairhaven to court my mother."[7]
After marriage Leroy and Lydia lived in Sandwich. They moved to New Bedford, Bristol County, then Taunton, Bristol County, as Roy changed jobs. Then in September 1927, they moved to Dennisport, Dennis, Barnstable County, where Roy ran a gas station. Daughter Gene remembered him delivering groceries for the Economy Grocery Store in Dennisport in 1936. Then they moved to Fairhaven in 1939, and he worked for Fibre Leather with Lydia's sister Leita.[8]
In 1943 Roy came down with tuberculosis and became a semi-invalid. The Doctors gave him six months to live, but with Lydia's help, he lived 12 years. Roy, Lydia and daughter Gene moved to Rochester, Plymouth County,, where they tried to run a chicken farm. It was too much for Lydia, so they sold out. With the help of Mac, Adiel and friends, they built a home on a lot behind daughter Doris' home in Dennisport.[9]
In the Spring of 1952 Lydia and daughter Doris both became widows. Lydia continued to live behind Doris until Lydia's death 12 years later. Daughter Gene wrote, "Mother was a hard working woman all her life and nothing was easy for her."[10]
Daughter Doris Dunham graduated from Dennis High School in 1931,[11] and married in 1937. Her husband, John Garfield, was a trawl fisherman; he had two boats, and in the off-season did carpentry. He died at the age of 37 from hemoechromotosis, a rare disease caused by a faulty metabolism.[12] He left Doris a 38 year old widow with children ages 13, 9 and 4. Doris built and managed a beauty shop beginning in that year, to support her family. She operated the beauty shop until her retirement in 1971, both her daughters worked in the shop, which she passed on to her daughter Sharyn.[13]
Daughter Gene graduated from Fairhaven High School. She waitressed from 1956 to 1964, later was a bookkeeper and receptionist for her second husband's television repair business and after his death was a secretary at Pyrofax Gas, Hyannis.[14]
