PHILIP CARLTON10 HATHAWAY (Adiel9, John8, David7, Love6, Savory5, Simon4, Arthur3, John2, Arthur1) was born at Fairhaven, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 18 August 1913 a son of Adiel Harvey Hathaway and his wife Julia Reed,[1] and died at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 23 July 1990.[2] He married at Fairhaven on 5 October 1934 IRENE MARY GOULD.[3] She was born at New Bedford on 31 December 1913, a daughter of Paul and Bride (Noseworthy) Gould.[4] She died at New Bedford on 16 September 1992.[5]
Philip was the eighth child of Adiel and Julia Hathaway. His parents were aged forty-eight and forty years old when he was born. His oldest sibling had already married, and by Philip's fifth birthday two more of his siblings had married. He grew up in a family of diminishing size with aging parents.
Philip graduated from New Bedford Vocational School in 1932. He had taken an electrical course, and had played in football and track. In 1935 he married Irene Gould at Unitalrian Memorial Church, Fairhaven. Phil and Irene grew up together as neighbors and played together as children.
Phil worked for Bailey and Grant, in New Bedford, delivering fuel oil. After 1938 the company changed its name to Tidewater Oil Company, and was later bought out by Getty. Phil and Irene lived with his mother at 251 Sconticut Neck Road until the 1938 hurricane.
On 21 September 1938 Phil had been at work. He had driven to Tiverton (Newport County, Rhode Island) on a job and returned to New Bedford. He left work for home soon after 4:00 p.m. He drove through water as he got to the Fairhaven-New Bedford Bridge. Phil saw some people standing on the bridge, looking at something in the water. There was a man in the water struggling to get to shore. Phil got out of his car, dove into the water, and pulled the man to shore. There was no time for introductions. The storm was getting worse and Phil wanted to get home. He jumped back in his car. As he approached the Fairhaven end of the bridge, he saw a car in the road ahead, with water up to the windows. Phil turned back, managed to get off the bridge at the New Bedford end, and drove north. He managed to cross the river several miles further north. Driving around fallen trees, and avoiding low lying areas, he got to Sconticut Neck some time later.
Meanwhile, Irene's parents had driven to the Hathaway residence to get Irene and her mother-in-law. As the water rose, Mrs. Gould kept going out to move the car to dry land. Finally, when the water was up to their knees, they got Phil's mother out and moved to higher ground. They stayed at the Broaders, Irene's aunt, until the water went down. Then Phil's mother was taken to her daughter Harriet's in New Bedford.
After the hurricane, Phil and Irene moved to another house on Sconticut Neck Road, then Hathaway Street, then Point Street. In 1948 they moved to 5 John Street, on Sconticut Neck, where they remained. Phil retired from Getty in 1975.[6] Thier first child, Nancy, was born in 1935. Ten years later they had twins, whom they named Philip and Irene.
