Descendants of
George Adam Krumbholz
and his wife
Pauline Zeller
Second Generation

EMILY MARGARET2 KRUMBHOLZ (George1) was born at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 30 January 1888 a daughter of George Adam Krumbholz and his wife Pauline Zeller.[1] She died at Buffalo, Erie County, New York, on 27 May 1974.[2] She married at New Bedford on 7 August 1912 ARNOLD KUNTZ.[3] He was born at Alsace, then a part of Germany, on 7 August 1887, a son of Leo Kuntz and his wife Emily Stadler. He died at Buffalo on 13 February 1968.[4]

Emily grew up in New Bedford, the eldest of five surviving children, where her parents were textile workers and active in the life of the small German-American community in that city.

Arnold came to America with his family when he was ten years old, according to the ship passenger list (age 12 based on his birth information). They came from Kirchheim, a small town in Alsace (population in 2014 was 679), 19 km west of Strasbourg. His parents, Leo, age 40, and Emilie, 38, and siblings Alfred, 11, Otto 7, Lena, 4, and Oscar, 2 years and six months, left the port of La Havre on the S.S. La Champagne on 9 June 1900, and arrived in New York harbor 17 June. Leo was described on the passenger list as a weaver. They indicated that they were headed for Warren, Rhode Island, where Leo's brother-in-law Joseph Weiger lived.[5]

The Kuntz family was living in Warren at the time of the birth of their next child, Emilie, on 16 April 1901,[6] but had moved to New Bedford by the 1910 census.[7]

Arnold and Emily married in 1912, when they were both in their mid 20s. The 1920 census reported them living at 48 Willow Street, New Bedford, with three children, Arnold, 6, Helen, 2, and Leona, seven months. Arnold was a loom fixer in a cotton mill. Arnold had become a citizen in 1919.[8]

Son Arnold recalled in 1985:

My parents both worked in various mills in New Bedford. My mother was a weaver and my father was a loom fixer. They left New Bedford when there was a large strike of mill workers in 1927, I think to work in a hospital in New York City. [9]

The 1930 census indicated a family in transition. Emily was living with her parents at 363 Cedar Street, New Bedford. with her were her three youngest children, Helen, 13, Leona, 11, and Lawrence, 8.[10] Arnold Kuntz and his eldest son Arnold, called "George A. Kuntz" in the census record, resided at 239 Essex Avenue, Buffalo, Erie County, New York. The elded Arnold, age 42, worked as a watchman at a chemical plant; his son, age 16, was also a laborer at a chemical plant.[11] The son described the experienced in a letter in 1985:

My father left New York City to come to work in Buffalo, NY, as a Security Guard for Buffalo Electro-Chemical Co.--now FNC Co. He worked at this for 20 years then retired. I came to Buffalo in November 1929. The rest of the family came in 1930 from New Bedford. My father was bothered with stomach trouble and had to stay home quite often. That is why my mother worked. They were good parents. [12]

The 1940 census reported the family at 47 Wyandotte Street, Buffalo, as follows:[13]

61. Kuntz, Leona M. daughter F W 20 S H3 MA same house out of work

This depression era census also gathered economic data. Arnold Kuntz, who provided the information to the census taker, rented their home for $32.50/month. He worked the previous 52 weeks as a watchman for $ 1560. Son Arnold worked 52 weeks for $ 1845. Leona had been out of work for 68 weeks. I have not found daughter Helen Kuntz in the 1940 census; she was 24 years old.

When Arnold died in 1968 in Buffalo, his last reported address was Angola, Erie County.[14] Emily was reported residing in Buffalo when she died in 1974.[15] Arnold Kuntz and his wife Emily Margaret Krumbholz had the following children:
