Pauline Zeller
Second Generation

ANNA PAULINA2 KRUMBHOLZ (George1) was born at New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 15 November 1889, a daughter of George Adam Krumbholz and his wife Pauline Zeller.[1] She died at New Bedford on 2 November 1938.[2] She married at New Bedford on 1 May 1916 JOHN MARTIN PROTZ.[3] He was born at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 18 May 1886, a son of Frank J. Protz and his first wife Augusta Schipenoski.[4] He died in February 1968.[5]

Anna Paulina Krumbholz grew up in New Bedford, where she, like her parents, worked in textile mills.

John Martin Protz grew up in Boston. His father, variously called Frank, Fritz or Francis, come to America in 1876 (1910 census), or 1880 (1920 census), or 1884 (1900 census), and was born in Germany, probably in Baden, about October 1855, a child of Stephen and Philippina Protz.[6] John's mother, whose maiden name is variously spelled Schipenoski, Cechnierski, or Shipenafese, was born in Prussia about April-May 1853, a daughter of Ulruc and Christina.[7] Frank and Augusta had three children whose births were recorded at Boston:

  1. John Martin Protz, b. 18 May 1886
  2. Elizabeth Protz b. 22 August 1888;[8] d. at Boston on 27 July 1889.[9]
  3. Francis J. Protz b. March 1890;[10] d. at Boston on 13 November 1890.[11]

John's mother, Augusta, died at Boston on 28 March 1890, from puerperal fever,[12] a fever caused by uterine infection following childbirth. John was three years old when his mother died; his newborn brother lived for only eight months. Frank continued to raise his young son for another four years before remarrying.

Frank Protz married, as his second wife, Eva Theresa (Bronnbauer) Huber, at Boston, on 25 November 1894. Born in Germany about May 1856 to Loranz and Eva Bronnbauer,[13] Theresa had first married, at Boston on 17 August 1892, Arthur Huber, who was born at Germany about June-July 1853.[14] Five months after their marriage, Arthur Huber died, at Boston on 7 January 1893.[15] Five months after his death, their only child was born, Theresa A. Huber, on 14 June 1893.[16]

The marriage of Frank Protz to Theresa Huber created a blended family of a 39 year old father, 38 year old mother, his son of eight years, and her daughter of 1 year. They continued to live in Boston, where the 1900 census reported Frank to be a day laborer.[17] Frank and Theresa had one child, Adolph J. Protz, born at Boston on 15 July 1895, who lived a little over a month, dying on 26 August.[18]

John Protz' step-mother, Theresa, died at Boston on 16 April, 1908, from phthisis,[19] a general wasting away, which she had for seven years. By then John was twenty-one years old, but still living at home. The 1910 census reported Frank Protz, 53, widower, working for the city as a laborer, with his son, John Protz, 23, who was a heel scourer at a shoe factory, and step-daughter Theresa Huber, 16.[20]

At the time of their marriage in 1916, John Protz, 30, lived in New Berdford, where he worked in a shoe factory; Anna Krumbholz, 26, worked as a winder tender in a textile mill.[21]

The 1920 census reported the John Protz family at 8 Glover Street, New Bedford. John and Anna had two sons under 3. John's father, Frank, lived with them. John was a machine operator at a twist drill concern; Frank was a laborer in a cotton mill.[22]

The 1930 census reported this family at 443 Coggeshall Street, New Bedford, as follows:[23]

This census record also reported that John Protz rented their home for $24/month, and that the three sons all attended school.

John and Annie Protz had one more child, Pauline, born about 1932-3. Anna died in 1938, leaving John Protz with children ages 21, 19, 16, and about 13, 11 and 5. The 1940 census reported John M. Protz, widower, machinist operator at a drill factory, 54, with children Bernard, 18, out of work new worker, Margaret, 15, in school, Veronica, 13, in school, and Pauline, 7, in school.[24] Son Vincent, 22, was reported lodging in a home in Hyannis, Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, where he worked as assistant manager of a "5 and 10."[25] I have not found eldest son Francis in this census.

John M. Protz died in 1968. John and Anna are buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford.[26]
