GEORGE BERNARD2 KRUMBHOLZ (George1) was born at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 19 May 1895 the only son of George Adam Krumbholz and his wife Pauline Zeller.[1] He died at DeBois, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on 6 April 1971.[2] He married at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 3 May 1915 HARRIET MARIE HATHAWAY.[3] She was born at Mansfield, Bristol County, on 5 September 1895, a daughter of Adiel Harvey Hathaway and his wife Julia Lawton Reed.[4] She died at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 2 December 1972.[5]

George grew up in New Bedford, with three older sisters and one younger sister. His parents were active in the small German American community of New Bedford, and his mother led all of the children to be involved in Saint Boniface Roman Catholic church. Harriet grew up on Sconticut Neck Road, in a rural section of Fairhaven, Bristol County. She was the second of eight children; her father was a rural mail carrier.

George and Harriet met at New Bedford Vocational School, where George studied accounting and Harriet majored in foods. She later attended Wilfred Academy in Boston to learn hair dressing. Daughter Pauline repeated this story:

When they were courting, George lived in New Bedford, and Harriet lived on Sconticut Neck, Fairhaven. They often repeated this story: 'Once Dad borrowed the horse and carriage which Grandpa used to deliver the mail. He brought Mother home late that night. He said that coming home he couldn't get the horse to go, because the horse stopped at every mailbox along the way. . . . Very often Dad stayed too long and missed the trolly car.' [6]

George had received training in accounting, but his passion was music. His instrument was the violin. He organized and led his own band for many years, and later worked as a salesman of musical instruments. George held a variety of jobs, including:

Meisel Music was owned by George's friend, Chris Kratt. George began working for him in 1954, and in 1956 was promoted to Vice-President, but continued to travel across Pennsylvania selling instruments.[8]

As a musician's income is not stable, Harriet provided regular income. She worked as a hairdresser for Albert Gonsalves on Pleasant Street, New Bedford. Then she owned and operated her own business, Harriet's Beauty Shop. Pauline recalled:

My parents were modern! They had a group of friends called, 'The Crowd.' They were husbands and wives. They were all friends who would get together every once in a while. They had their own bootlegger in the crowd. His name was Huey. So they never had any trouble getting booze for their parties." [9]

The Krumbholz family moved several times, around the city of New Bedford. They resided at the following addresses:

They owned their last home. George purchased the property on 13 July 1940, for $500. They had their home built, mortgaging it for $2200 on 9 November 1940, and discharging the mortgage on 3 January 1950.[11]

Pauline recalled that when her parents were planning their new home, Harriet, now retired, went back to Vocational School.

She wanted a stair carpet for her new home. She had a customer who used to make rugs. My mother would give her permanents, and she would pay for them with rugs. Mother spoke to her about a stair carpet. The woman said, 'Why don't you do it yourself, Harriet?' So she went back to Vocational School. She went nights. She learned how to hook. She learned about dying.[12]

George was raised Roman Catholic at Saint Boniface Church, where he was an altar boy. He was inactive at the time of marriage. He and Harriet both joined Trinity Methodist Church, New Bedford. Religious faith became more important to George after he had a heart attack in the 1940s. When he went to thank the Doctor, the Doctor said, "Don't thank me. You should be dead now," and pointed him to God.[13] On 3 February 1957 they both joined First Congregational Church, Fairhaven.[14]

George and "Hattie" were both active in Fairhaven Grange #363, and she was active in the Fort Phoenix Chapter of the D.A.R. Harriet is remembered as an exceptional homemaker. She made all her own draperies, slipcovers, and bedspreads. She was a good taylor. She braided and hooked rugs. She was a marvelous cook![15] George was an accomplished musician and former professional violinist.[16]

George B. Krumbholz wrote his will at New Bedford on 8 July 1966.[17] For the text of his will, see below. George died unexpectedly, of natural causes, while on a selling trip, at DuBois, Pennsylvania, on 6 April 1971. He died of a heart attack late that afternoon while visiting at Beer's Music Store, Brady Street, DuBois. He was dead on arrival at Maple Avenue Hospital, DuBois.[18] He was remembered in the following obituary:[19]
