Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

MARGARET2 LEZENBY (Cornelius1) was born at Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, on 20 March 1856, a daughter of Cornelius Lezenby and his wife Eliza Wilson. She died at Camden on 27 March 1932.[1] She married at Camden on 25 March 1873 FREDERICK HOWARD.[2] He was born at Pennsylvania about 1844, a son of Thomas and Mary Howard. He died at Camden on 23 June 1884.[3] Margaret (Lezenby) Howard married as her second husband about 1885-6 MICHAEL REILLY.[4] He was born at Ireland on 19 August 1841 and died at Camden on 12 October 1911.[5]

Margaret Lezenby married Frederick Howard five days after her 17th birthday. Frederick was a ship's carpenter.[6] Margaret, often called "Maggie," gave birth to three children, but only one survived infancy.[7] Maggie was 28 when her husband died, leaving her with a six-year-old son.

Margaret Lezenby remarried at about age 30. Her second husband, Michael Reilly, was 45. He had been born in Ireland, and came to America in 1850, at about the age of nine. He was a marble cutter. They owned their own home at 1862 Mount Ephraim Avenue, Camden.[8]

Michael Reilly died in 1911, at the age of 70; Margaret was 55; her grown son and his family soon moved in to the family home with her.

George Howard was the only surviving child of Frederick Howard and his wife Margaret Lezenby. When he was five years old, his father died. A year or two later his mother married Michael Reilly, an immigrant from Ireland. George's step father was a marble cutter, an industry which shaped George's life. George's occupation was described in census records as follows:[9]

Year Occupation
1900 marble works
1910 bookkeeper, marble yard
1920 manager, monument works
1930 proprietor, monumental business
1940 salesman, monumental

In 1900 George was still living with his mother and step-father on Mount Ephraim Street, Camden.[10] He married within two years of that census. In 1910 his mother and step-father were at 1862 Mount Ephraim Avenue, while George, his wife and three children, resided nearby at 1848 Mount Ephraim Avenue.[11] In 1920 George, his wife and five children resided at the 1862 Mount Ephraim Avenue address.[12] His step-father had died in 1911. I have not found his mother in the 1920 Census. The 1930 and 1940 censuses reported George Howard's family at two locations, the Mount Ephraim Avenue address, and locations in Ventnor City, Atlantic County, New Jersey. The 1930 census reported George, Olive, and the four children still at home at 2 Nashville Avenue, Ventnor City.[13] The report from the family home in Camden described a four generation home:[14]

Line Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
27. Reilly, Margaret head F W 74 Wd NJ England Irish Free State none
28. Howard, George son M W 52 M NJ England NJ monumental
29. Dalton, Thomas grandson-in-law M W 30 M NJ NJ NJ undertaker associate
30. Dalton, Margaret granddaughter F W 26 M NJ NJ NJ none
31. Dalton, Margaret great granddaughter F W 2 S PA NJ NJ none
32. Howard, George grandson M W 24 S NJ NJ NJ monumental

The record also indicated that Margaret Reilly owned the home, valued at $10,000, that George had a radio, and that Thomas and Margaret had married at the ages of 27 and 23, or about three years before. This record also suggests that George Howard's son-in-law, Thomas Dalton, working for an undertaker, was in an occupation closely related to George's. It would appear that the George Howard family was living at the shore, while George and George, father and son, continued to work in the family business at Camden.

George's mother, Margaret (Lezenby) (Howard) Reilly died in 1932.

The 1940 census contained several entries for this family:

Olive Howard died in 1960. George married Agnes Rasmussen in January 1963 and died in April 1964. The monument at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, Camden County, provides information on the family:[20]
