Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

ELIZA2 LEZENBY (Cornelius1) was born at Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, on 14 February 1858 a daughter of Cornelius Lezenby and his wife Eliza Wilson. She died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 6 May 1931.[1] She married about 1874-5 ASCHER A. MOORE.[2] He was born at Pennsylvania on 25 May 1846, and died at Philadelphia on 15 September 1932.[3]

Eliza Lezenby grew up in Camden, the ninth of ten children. She married at about the age of seventeen, and became a mother before her eighteenth birthday. She had two children, both of whom lived to adulthood. Ascher and Eliza lived in Philadelphia, for most of their years at 1349 Colwyn Street.

Ascher A. Moore, at the age of eighteen, enlisted for 100 days in the Union Army in the Civil War: Company E, 192th Pennsylvania regiment. He served from 12 July 1864 to 11 November 1864.[4] He re-enlisted on 11 April, 1865, two days after Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Although the main rebel force had surrendered, the Union was still enlisting men to finish the job. Ascher Moore enlisted for one year in Company F of the 215th Pennsylvania regiment. He was mustered out on 21 July 1865.[5]

The 1880 Census reported A. A. Moore, 34, living at 408 Hartman Street, Camden, wiht his wife "Lidie," 22, their son Charles, 4, sister, W. W. Wood, 28, and brother-in-law Cornelius Lezenby, 26. A. A. Moore was a salesman; Cornelius Lezenby worked as a blacksmith.[6] "W. W. Wood" could refer to Eliza's sister, Jane, who married William W. Wood.

The 1900 Census reported Ascher A. Moore, born May 1846, living at 1328 Fairhill Street, Philadelphia, with his wife, Liza, born February 1858, and their children, Charles H., born November 1875, and Jessie W., born September 1881. Ascher worked as a fireman; Charles worked for the government as a clerk.[7]

The 1910 census reported this family at the Colwyn Street address where they would remain. Ascher was a fireman. With Ascher and Eliza lived their daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. William and Jennie (Moore) Thompson had been married eight years, their son Robert was five. William was proprietor of a steam fitting business.[8] Son Charles had married about 1900-1 and lived with his wife and children at another address in Philadelphia.

In 1920 William Thompson was reported head of the household, which included his wife, Jennie, and her parents, Ascher and Eliza. The child, Robert Thompson, had died later in 1910. William was described as a heating contractor; Ascher still a fireman.[9]

In 1930 the household had the same composition. William was described as a plumber with a "general practice." Asher and Eliza were now aged 84 and 72. They would both die within three years time.[10]

Charles Hewitt Moore grew up in his early years at Camden, the eldest of two children. Some time between 1880 and 1900 the family moved to Philadelphia, where Charles' father worked as a fireman.

Charles and Caroline married in 1901, and lived in Philadelphia, where Charles worked as a clerk in the Post Office. They had three children, but only two survived infancy.

The 1910 census reported the family living at 5509 Chester Avenue, Philadelphia:[11]

This census record additionally reported that Charles Moore owned his own home, but had a mortgage; Charles and Caroline had been married nine years; Caroline had given birth to three children, two of whom were living.

The 1920 Census reported the family at the same address, consisting of Charles H., 76 [?!], post office clerk, Caroline, 39, housekeeper, Jennie T., 15, in school, and Edward Z., 12, in school. Harry Blacker, 19. who also worked at the post office, was renting a room in their home.[12]

Daughter Jane married in 1925, and she and husband moved in with her parents: The 1930 Census reported them at 1354 Colwyn Street.[13]

The decade of the 1930s brought much change. Edward married in 1935. Caroline died in 1937. Some time between 1935 and 1940 Charles Moore and the Sohns moved to Florida.

The 1940 census reported that C. R. Sohn owned his home, at 718 East 87th Street, Miami, Dade County, Florida. He worked as a credit manager for a bank, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, for $1800. Wife Jane, 35, worked as employment secretary for a retail department store, 40 hours a week. She had worked 26 weeks the previous year for $468. Charles H. Moore, 64, was described as a boarder, and was not employed. They had all lived at Philadelphia five years before. Clarence had completed four years of college; Jane and her father had completed four years of high school.[14]

Clarence H. Moore was still living in 1962, according to Social Security records.[15]

Jane (Moore) Sohn died in 1967 at Florida. Her husband Clarence had died in 1946. Caroline (Zwicker) Moore and her daughter Jane (Moore) Sohn are buried at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.[16]

Edward Moore in 1940 was living at the home place, 1354 Colwyn Street, Philadelphia, with his wife and her parents. Edward, 32, worked 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, as an engineer for a phonograph company. His wife, Dorothy, was a homemaker. Her father, George Ballenger, 54, had been unemployed for 104 weeks; his usual job was salesman for a chemical company. Dorothy's mother, Emiline Ballenger, 49, was also a homemaker. All four reported they had been living at that address for at least five years. Edward and his wife had completed two years of High School; George and Emiline had both completed eighth grade.[17] Edward Moore died at Philadelphia in 1985. His wife Dorothy died in 1968.

Jennie W. Moore, daughter of Ascher and Eliza (Lezenby) Moore, grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where her father was a fireman. She married when she was nineteen years old, and she and her husband moved in with her parents at 1349 Colwyn Street, Philadelphia. Jennie and William Thompson had one child, Robert, who died at the age of six from diabetes.[18] Her husband, William Thompson, was in the heating and plumbing business. His occupation was variously described in census records:[19]

Year Occupation
1910 proprietor, steam fittings
1920 contractor, heating
1930 plumber, general practice

The early thirites brought death to the Thompson-Moore household. In 1931 Jennie's mother died; in 1932 her father died. In 1933 Jennie's husband, William died. Jennie continued to live at the home on Colwyn Street, and in 1940 was reported in the census with three lodgers.[6] Jennie continued to live to the age of ninety-nine, dying in 1981.

Eliza Lezenby and her husband Ascher A. Moore had the following children:

  1. CHARLES HEWITT3 MOORE b. at Camden on 28 November 1875,[21] living in the 1940 Census, m. on 1901 CAROLINE ZWICKER[22] b. at Philadelphia on 31 July 1881, d. there on 29 May 1937, child of Charles F. Zwicker and Henrietta Fisher.[23] Children of Charles and Caroline:
