The Ancestry of Barbara Jane Murphy (1926-1993)

Barbara Jane Murphy was adopted, which mens that she has two sets of ancestors: her genetic ancestors and her legal ancetors. All we know of her genetic ancestors is that her mother was named EVELYN RUSSELL. However Barbara was legally, socially and culturally a Murphy, and those ancestors can be traced.

The legal documents, copies of which are in the possession of the family, file # 12384 of Lake County Indiana, state the following:[1]

MURPHY ANCESTORS OF BARBARA JANE MURPHY

THOMAS1 MURPHY was born at Ireland sometime between 1804 and 1820, and died probably at Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts, between 1870 and 1880. He married probably at Massachuestts before 1845 MARY A. FLANAGAN. She was born at Ireland sometime between 1814 and 1822,[2] and died probably at Lawrence after 1880.

Thomas was reported as forty-five years old in the 1850 Census, fifty years old in the 1860 Census, and fifty years old in the 1870 Census, which leads to the inexactness of his birth date. Mary was reported as thirty in the 1850 Census, forty in the 1860 Census, forty-eight in the 1870 Census, and sixty-five in the 1880 Census. They probably married before the birth of their first child in 1845, and probably came to America before that date. Thomas was a stone mason.

Based on the places of birth of their children, they resided at Malden, Middlesex County, Massasxhusetts, in 1845, in Reading, Middlesex County, the following year, and in Lawrence from 1848 onward.

The 1850 Census reported Thomas and Mary Murphy at Lawrence with children Hannah 5, Daniel 4, and Mary 1.[3] The 1860 Census reported the family at Lawrence as follows:[4]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
34. Thomas Murphy 50 M stone mason $500 Ireland
35. Mary Murphy 40 F housekeeper Ireland
36. Hannah Murphy 15 F operative MA
37. Daniel P. Murphy 13 M MA
38. Mary A. Murphy 11 F MA
39. Johanna Murphy 5 F MA
40. Thomas H. Murphy 4 M MA

Thomas and Mary Murphy had at least two other children, who had died. An "operative' is a term used for a person who worked in the textile mills. Hannah, Daniel and Mary were all in school. The child here called "Johanna" is elsewhere called Josephine.

The 1870 Census reported Thomas and Mary Murphy at Lawrence with children Mary, 20, dressmaker, Josephine, 15, at school, and Thomas, 13, at school.[5]

The 1880 Census reported Mary Murphy, widow, suffering from paralysis, living at Lawrence. Living with her were her son Thomas, 23, working in a grocery store, Thomas's new wife, Nancy, 19, Mary's daughters, Mary 28 and Josephine 25, both dressmakers, and a niece, Mary Troy, 26, working in a cotton mill.[6]

Thomas Murphy and his wife Mary Flanagan had the following children:

  1. HANNAH2 MURPHY b. at Malden on 22 January 1845; d. at Lawrence on 4 July 1863.[7]
  2. DANIEL PATRICK2 MURPHY b. at Reading on 10 February 1846.[8]
  3. JOHN2 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 19 February 1848;[9] d. before 1 June 1850 (not reported in census).
  4. MARY A.2 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 24 January 1849.[10]
  5. CATHERINE T.2 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 18 June 1851;[11] d. there on 19 March 1859.[12]
  6. JOSEPHINE2 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 31 October 1854;[13] m. at Lawrence on 26 October 1886 RICHARD J. SHERIDAN, b. at Ireland about 1855-6.[14]
  7. THOMAS H.2 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 10 July 1856.

THOMAS H.2 MURPHY (Thomas1) was born at Lawrence on 10 July 1856 a son of Thomas Murphy and his wife Mary Flanagan .[15] He died at Lawrence on 31 July 1891.[16] He married at Danvers, Essex County, on 9 February 1880 NANCY J. STONE.[17] She was born at Middleton, Essex County, on 28 April 1862, a daughter of James Stone and his second wife Lucy Newton.[18] Nancy married second at Lawrence on 24 January 1896 JOSEPH EDWARD BURDETTE, who was born at Quebec on August 1865.[19]

Thomas Murphy, the last and probably seventh child of his family, grew up in the cotton textile mill town of Lawrence. His father probably died sometime during young Thomas' teenage years. Nancy Stone was born two months after her parents' marriage; they were sixty-two and thirty-seven years of age. It was a second marriage for both of them. Lucy, her mother, brought to the marriage two boys from her previous marriage. Nancy's father died when she was fifteen years old.

Thomas and Nancy lived in Lawrence, where Thomas worked in a grocery store. He died from pneumonia when he was thirty-five years old,[20] leaving his widow with children ages 7, 5, 3, and 2.

Four years after Thomas' death, his widow, Nancy, married Joseph Burdette, 30, a fish dealer who had not been previously married. According to his marriage record, Joseph was born at Vermont to Reuben and Annie Burdette, however the 1900 Census stated he was born in French Canada and came to the United States in 1871. The family was reported in that Census in Lawrence as follows:[21]

Other information in this record: Joseph ws a naturalized citizen; Nancy had given birth to seven children, four of whom were living.

Thomas H. Murphy and his wife Nancy Stone had the following children who survivied infancy:

  1. THOMAS J.3 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 11 April 1884.
  2. JAMES3 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 31 May 1886.[22]
  3. MARTIN F.3 MURPHY b. at Lawrence on 3 January 1888;[23] m. at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, on 3 March 1910 NELLIE H. MUISE b. at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, about 1889-90.[24]
  4. RICHARD3 MURPHY b. at Massachusetts on September 1889.[25]

THOMAS J.3 MURPHY (Thomas2-1) was born at Lawrence on 11 April 1884 a son of Thomas H. Murphy and his wife Nancy Stone.[26] He died at Gary, Lake County, on 9 September 1941.[27] He married at Ripley, Chautauqua County, New York, on 19 April 1907 EDNA GRACE SALISBURY.[28] She was born at Pennsylvania on 12 September 1887, a daughter of Clarence Grant Salisbury and his first wife Ida Randall. She died at Gary on 3 November 1929.[29]

Thomas Murphy grew up at Lawrence, the eldest of four surviving children. When he was seven years old his father died. When young Thomas was eleven his mother remarried. Living with this family in 1900, he had by 1907, the year of his marriege, moved west to New York state. He worked for the railroad throughout his adult life.

Edna Salisbury grew up in Albion, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where her father worked in some way related to his father's hardware store. When Edna was two years old her mother died; when she was about eight years old her father remarried. In the next few years she acquired three new half-siblings.

The 1910 Census reported Thomas, 26, his wife Edna, 23, and their daughter Loretta, 2, boarding in the home of Forrenaut and Addie Woodworth at Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio. Thomas was a brakeman for the railroad.[30] By 1916, the birth of their third child, they were living at Gary.

The 1920 Census reported the family at Gary:[31]

81. Murphy, Lyretta daughter F W 12 S PA MA PA none
82. Murphy, Francis son M W 8 S PA MA PA none

In 1926 they adopted Barbara. Why did they adopt this child? They already had three children of their own; the youngest was ten years old; Thomas and Edna were forty-two and thirty-nine respectively. This does not sound like a typical random adoption situation. Perhaps Thomas and Edna were related or acquainted in some way with Evelyn Russell, the mother of this baby.

Edna (Salisbury) Murphy died in 1929 from bronchial pneumonia. She was forty-two years old.[32] She left Thomas with four children, ages 22, 18, 13, and 3. The 1930 Census reported Thomas Murphy, 45, at Gary, with his children, Loretta, 22, Francis, 18, Marian, 13, and Barbara 3. Also living with them was Ila McKenney, 30, housekeeper, a widow. Thomas was inspector for E. J. & E. Railroad.[33]

In the decade of the 1930s all of the children left home. In 1940 Thomas Murphy, 55, widower, resided in a lodging house at Gary. He was a yardmaster for the railroad.[34] Barbara lodged in the home of Ben and Blanche James, the sheriff of Steuben County, Indiana. I do not know for how long she had been living with the James family; according to the census record she was living at the same place in 1935. This 1940 record, for Angola, Steuben County, the family residing in public property, follows:[35]

SALISBURY ANCESTORS OF BARBARA JANE MURPHY

SANFORD SALISBURY was born at New York about 1795-6,[40] and died perhaps at Williams County, Ohio, on 1896.[41] He married SARAH SAWDEY. She was born at Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York, on 1801 and died perhaps at Ellison, Warren County, Illinois, on 1885.[42]

Sanford and Sarah (Sawdey) Salisbury were natives of upstate New York. Sarah was born in Schoharie County, and their first child was born in Cortland County, New York. However by 1827 they had settled in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Western Erie County includes the two adjoining townships of Girard and Conneaut, and the borough of Albion, located within Conneaut Township. These locations were the home of the Salisbury family. The 1830 Census reported Sanford Salisbury in Conneaut Township; the 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses found them in Girard Township. Sanford was a farmer.

The 1870 Census reported Sarah Salisbury at Albion living with her son Albert, a gardener, and her son Tracy, a house painter.[43] I have not found Sanford in the 1870 Census, and I have found neither Sanford nor Sarah in the 1880 Census. "jeanette" reported to Find a Grave that Sarah Salisbury died at Ellison, Warren County in 1885. The photograph from Ellison Cemetery, Roseville, Warren County, shows a broken grave marker that cannot be fully read. Scott Coyle reported to Find a Grave that Sanford Salisbury died at Williams County on 1896, no cemetery indicated. I do not know their sources of information and cannot corroborate this death information from other sources.

James Parsons Salisbury was an early settler of Kansas, arriving in the Spring of 1855. Kansas was officially opened to settlement by the United States government in 1854. According to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Kansas would become a free or slave state when admitted to the union on the basis of the vote of its citizens. This led to competition among settlers from the North and South, and occasional armed conflict. James Salisbury was vice-president of the first Free State Convention, in 1856. James served as a captain in the militia during the Civil War. In 1864 he was elected a representative to the state legislature.[44]

James married Mrs. Harriet Millard in 1852. Harriet had lived in southern Illinois, but had returned to the east, to Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, where in the 1850 Census she was reported living with her mother-in-law and her two sons.[45] Harriet died in her late 30s, leaving James with four children to raise. His daughter (or step-daughter) Mary and his sister Eliza (a.k.a. Roxie) became the homemakers.

James Salisbury farmed in High Prairie Township, Leavenworth County, Kansas. His obituary, as shared at findagrave.com gives more description of his life:[46]

JAMES P. SALISBURY, farmer, P. O. Leavenworth, came to Kansas in March, 1855, and located in Leavenworth City for a short time, and moved to his present location on his farm in High Prairie Township, and has lived there since.

Mr. Salisbury was born in Cortland County, New York, in 1826; when quite small his parents moved to Erie County, Penn., and he lived in Erie County, about twenty-six years.

He came to Rock Island, Ill., in the fall of 1854, and to Kansas in the spring of 1855.

He was married in Crawford County, Penn., in 1852, to Mrs. Harriet Y. Millard, a native of Southern Illinois. They have had four children: Mary S., Leslie G., Cynthia L., and Clayton E.

Mr. Salisbury has about 200 acres of rich land in his home place, and has very fine improvements. He was a captain of militia during the late war, and was elected a representative from his district to the legislature in 1864, and served one term; was a member of the Union League, and was Vice-President of the first Free-state Convention held at Big Springs in 1856.

Mr. Salisbury is one of the oldest settlers of the State, and is a highly respected citizen.

THE INJURIES FATAL

Mr. J. P. Salisbury, After Being Unconscious Since Thursday, Died Yesterday Afternoon.

Mr. J. P. Salisbury, who on last Thursday was thrown head first against a stony roadway at the foot of Pilot Knob hill, and had the base of his brain injured so that paralysis followed, died at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon without having recovered consciousness. He had the best of treatment but without avail. He was at the home of Mr. George E. Russell at Russell park when he died. His two daughters, Mrs. Truax and Mrs. McElroy, and his sister, who had been his housekeeper, were with him when the end came. Mr. Salisbury's wife has been dead about 28 years. A son, Mr. E. C. Salisbury, who was in Denver when the news of the accident reached him, will reach home in time for the funeral , which will take place next Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was 69 years of age and was one of the early settlers in the county. He had a fine farm near Bell's schoolhouse. Much of it is virgin land, never yet having been touched by the plow. From this land Mr. Salisbury made quite a little fortune by the sale of prairie hay, the quality of which he was always very proud. One season several years ago when he had an unusually good crop he had a street procession of loads of hay bedecked with flags, and had his family, who are nearly all musicians, make music for the procession. He was an honest man, a good citizen and always appeared to be in a happy mood.

Melvina Salisbury married Martin Sargent, described as a lumberman in 1860 and as a fire insurance agent in 1880. They were living at Ashtabula at that time. After her husband's death, Melvina lived with her son Frederick and his family, at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, where son Frederick worked as a builder and contractor.[47]

Albert Salisbury lived at Albion, where he worked as a gardener.[48]

Tracy Salisbury never married, and drifted around a bit. In 1860 he was boarding in what appears to have been a hotel at Conneaut Township, his occupation listed as foreman. In 1870 he lived with his brother Albert at Albion, working as a house carpenter. In 1880 he was reported boarding in a hotel at Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, working in a handle factory. The 1900 Census found him at Middletown, in the home of his nephew, Frederick Sargent, working as a machinist.[49]

Cyrus Salisbury served in the Civil War from November 1862 to 27 July 1863. He was part of Company G, 169th regiment Pennsylvania Infantry, a unit of draftees enlisted for nine months. They were stationed at Fortress Monroe and saw brief action in the Army of the Patomac.[50] I have no further information on Cyrus.

Maria Ann Salisbury married and moved to Wisconsin, where she died at the age of thirty-three.

Eliza Salisbury, also known as Roxie, moved to Kansas, where she kept house for her brother James after his wife's death. She remained single until after her brother's death, and married at the age of fifty-four.

Sanford Salisbury and his wife Sarah Sawdey had the following children:

  1. JAMES PARSONS SALISBURY b. at Cortland County on 20 July 1824; d. at Leavenworth County on 11 November 1893; m (her 2d). at Crawford County, Pennsylvania, on 1852 HARRIET Y. LAWRENCE HERBERT2 SALISBURY (Sanford1) was born at Girard Township on 3 October 1841 a son of Sanford Salisbury and his wife Sarah Sawdey. He died at Albion on 31 August 1916.[77] He married on 1862 ADELAIDE A. MORRIS.[78] She was born at Girard Township on 14 June 1844, a daughter of ISAAC MORRIS and his wife LOUISA RICHARDSON. She died at Albion on 7 August 1917.[79]

Lawrence Salisbury operated a hardware store in Albion most of his adult life. Nelson's Biographical Dictionary and Historical Reference Book of Erie County, Pennsylvania, published in 1896, provided the following biography:[80]

L. H. Salisbury, hardware dealer, Albion, Erie County, is a son of Sanford and Sarah (Sawdey) Salisbury, natives of New York. . . . He was born in Girard township in 1841, where he resided until coming to Conneaut township in 1864. L. H. Salisbury was married in 1862, to Miss Adda Morris, daughter of Isaac and Louisa Morris, old residents of Lockport, Erie county, Pennsylvania. . . . Mr. Salisbury began the hardware business in Albion in 1870, and since that time it has grown and prospered under careful management. He is to-day recognized as a representative business man, and carries in stock all kinds of tin and hardware, stoves and ranges, and, besides, pays strict attention to plumbing and jobbing, all work being guaranteed satisfactory. Personally Mr. Salisbury stands deservedly high, while his establishment ranks as a leader. He has taken great interest in the Albion graded schools, and has served as school director for twenty years.

Census records called him a "tinner" in 1870, "tinner and merchant" in 1880, "merchant + (hardware)" in 1900, and "merchant, hardware" in 1910.[81]

Lawrence died in 1916 from tic douloureux. Adelaide died the following year from a cerebral hemorrhage.[82]

CLARENCE GRANT3 SALISBURY (Lawrence2, Sanford1) was born at Platea on 5 May 1864, a son of Lawrence Herbert Salisbury and his wife Adelaide A. Morris. He died at Albion on 19 August 1941.[97] He married first about 1885-6 IDA RANDALL.[98] She was born on 16 July 1867 and died on 23 October 1891.[99] He married second about 1895-6 MARGUERITE ELISABETH HOUSER.[100] She was born at Alleghany County, Pennsylvania, on 9 January 1874 and died at Erie, Erie County, on 10 March 1948.[101]

Clarence Salisbury lived all of his life at Albion, and worked in various ways associated with his father's hardware store. His occupation was described in census records as follows:[102]

Year Occupation
1900 tinsmith
1910 tinsmith, hardware store
1920 plumber, shop
1930 retail merchant, hardware
1940 part owner, retail hardware

Clarence and his first wife Ida had two children. She died at the age of twenty-four, leaving Clarence with two daughters, ages four and two. About four years later he married Marguerite, and they had three more children. The 1900 Census reported Clarence, 36, and Marguerite, 26, at Albion, with the two daughters of his fist marriage, Edna, 13, and Lina, 11, and their first child together, Ora, 3.[103]

By 1910, none of the children of the first marriage remained at home; Clarence and Marguerite reported Ora, 12, and Paul, 6. In 1920 only Paul, 16, and Lawrence, 8, remained at home.[104]

Clarence Salisbury and his first wife Ida Randall had the following children:

STONE ANCESTORS OF BARBARA JANE MURPHY

JAMES STONE was born at Limerick, York County, Maine, on 31 March 1801 a son of JACOB STONE and his wife MERCY BUTLER. He died at Middleton on 6 June 1877.[117] He married first NANCY DEERING. She was born at New Durham, Strafford County, New Hampshire, on 15 February 1800, a daughter of Clement Deering and his wife Nancy Beckford. She died at Middleton on 15 February 1861.[118] He married second at Middleton on 9 February 1862 LUCY (NEWTON) GERRY.[119] She was born at Dixfield, Oxford County, Maine, sometime around 1825-32, a daughter of JACON NEWTON and his wife FANNY PARKS. She died at Middleton on 23 October 1901.[120] Lucy had married first at Stoneham, Middlesex County, on 14 August 1851 ALBERT CUTTING GERRY.[121] He was born at Troy, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, on 4 July 1830, a son of Daniel Gerry and his wife Caroline Cutting. He died at Reading on 9 February 1860.[122] She married third at Middleton on 24 December 1882 JOHN F. BEAN.[123] He was born at Sandwich, Carroll County, New Hampshire, about 1830-1, a son of Asa C. Bean and his wife Margaret Tasker. He died at Middleton on 8 March 1891.[124] John Bean had been previously married, but I have no further information.

The earliest information I have on james Stone is the record of the 1860 Census, which found him in Middleton:[125]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
33. James Stone 59 M shoemaker $75 ME
34. Nancy Stone 60 F MA
35. Susan Stone 37 F MA
36. Naomi Stone 22 F MA
37. Martha Stone 19 F shoemaker MA
38. Mary S. Holey 19 F shoemaker MA
39. Johney B. Stone 1 M MA
40. John T. Bean 30 M shoemaker MA
1. Lydia Bean 7 F MA

This record also reported that Mary Holey had married within the past year, and Lydia Bean was attending school. The 1860 Census did not indicate how people were related. Nancy Stone would appear to be the wife of James Stone, which is confirmed by her death record. Susan, Naomi and Martha would appear to be children of the couple, perhaps there were more, who had already left the home. Perhaps the recently married Mary Holey is also a child of James and Nancy, perhaps a twin of Martha. John Bean will reappear as the third husband of James' second wife. Perhaps Lydia is a child of John Bean by his first wife. Very little of this can be proven.

James Stone's first wife died in 1861, when she was sixty-one years old and he was sixty. A year after her death he married Lucy (Newton) Gerry. She was about thirty-seven years old and had been a widow for two years.

Lucy Newton's birth date is difficult to pin down. According to the 1860 and 1870 censuses she was born about 1825-6; at the time of her first marriage, in 1851, she gave an age which indicated her birth about 1826-7; at her seconf marriage she indicated a birth about 1825-6; at her third marriage she gave an age that pointed to birth about 1829-30; the 1880 census reported an age that pointed to her birth about 1831-2; according to the 1900 Census she was born on August 1839; her age at death indicated a birth about 1839-40. We will follow the earliest records, which have her born about 1825-6. Perhaps she lost count somewhere along the way.

Lucy Newton, born in Maine, married at about the age of twenty-five in Massachusetts. She had at least two children by her first husband. Son Albert continued to live with his mother throught her life. Both sons worked in the shoe business in Middleton.

James Stone was a shoemaker also. After fifteen years of marriage, and one child, James Stone died of paralysis.[126] James was seventy-six, his wife Lucy was about fifty-one; their daughter Nancy was fifteen.

Five years into her second widowhood Lucy Stone married John F. Bean. This was his second marriage; I do not have any information on his first marriage. Eight years after their marriage, John Bean died of pneumonia at the age of sixty-one.[127] Lucy lived another ten years before her death from cancer.[128]

Lucy Newton and her first husband Albert Gerry had the following children:

  1. ALBERT WALLACE GERRY b. at Reading on 1 December 1854.[129]
  2. GEORGE H. GERRY b. at Reading on 8 December 1857.[130]

James Stone and his second wife Lucy (Newton) Gerry had the following child:

  1. NANCY J. STONE b. at Middleton on 28 April 1862.
