Ludwig D. Sonnenberg
and his wife Barbara Fetzer
and Some of Their Descendants

LUDWIG D.1 SONNENBERG was born at Russian Poland on 13 August 1854[1] a son of JOHN SONNENBERG and his wife DOROTHY ZELKE.[2] He died on 13 June 1929.[3] He married about 1885-6 BARBARA CARRY FETZER.[4] She was born at Russia on 11 August 1863 and died on 10 April 1930.[5]

All available records indicate that Ludwig and Barbara were of German ethnicity and that Barbara and her parents were born in Russia. According to the 1900 Census, Ludwig was born in "Russia (Poland)" and his parents were born in Germany.[6] The 1910 Census reported Ludwig and his parents born in Russia.[7] According to the 1920 Census, Ludwig was born in "Russian Poland" and his parents in Russia.[8] I see no reason to doubt that Ludwig came from Russian Poland, and the 1910 census taker located his origin in the more familiar location, with most of his neighbors. Borders in eastern Europe shifted many times in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Poland was once a much larger country than it is today. The country was divided among Russia, Germany and Austria in a series of partitions in 1772, 1793 and 1795. When Russia surrendered in World War I, it gave up much territory, some of which became a new independent Poland. After World War II, a significant part of this territory was returned to the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, portions of this former Polish territory became part of the Ukraine and Belorus. The portion of "Russian Poland" with the largest numbers of ethnic German inhabitants in the late Nineteenth Century was the region of Volhynia, most of which is today part of the Ukraine, in its far northwest corner. This would be the most probable place of origin for Ludwig, but I have found no evidence to indicate just where in Russian Poland Ludwig originated.

Ludwig and Barbara Sonnenberg arrived at the port of Baltimore, Maryland, on 22 July 1886 on the S. S. Weser, from Bremen, Germany. They traveled in steerage. According to the passenger list, Ludwig and Barbara were citizens of Russia, aged 29 and 28.[9] In fact they were aged 31 and 22, and had been married about one year.

The young Sonnenberg family first moved to South Dakota, where they had children born at Scotland, Bon Homme County (1887), Menno, Hutchinson County (1892) and an unspecified location in Hutchinson County (1895). They moved to North Dakota in 1897.[10] According to son Ludwig's obituary they moved to Anamoose, McHenry County; however the census for 1900 reported them in McLean County, and in 1910 and 1920 in Sheridan County. This can be explained. Sheridan County was attached to McLean County until 1908. Anamoose is in the extreme southeast corner of McHenry County, very close to the border with Sheridan County. The Sonnenberg family probably settled on a farm in the extreme northeast of Sheridan County, not far from the nearest settlement, Anamoose, in McHenry County.

The 1900 Census reported this family in Township number 150, McLean County, as follows:[11]

This census record contained significant additional information. Ludwig and Barbara had been married fourteen years, which would place their marriage about 1885-6. They immigrated in 1886. Ludwig had taken out papers for citizenship, but the process had not yet been completed. Barbara had given birth to a total of six children, four of whom were living. Perhaps the two children that died in infancy were born in the five year interval between their first and second surviving children. Ludwig owned his farm without a mortgage.

The census was taken on 1 June 1900. On 8 October of that year Ludwig Sonnenberg became a citizen of the United States. His Naturalization record follows:[12]

It is interesting that in the Oath section of this document, the word swear is crossed out and the word affirm written in. Could this be an indication of his religious affiliation?

The 1910 Census reported the "Louis" and Barbara Sonnenberg family in Georgetown Township, Sheridan County, consisting of Louis, 75, Barbara, 74, son Louis 18, Carry, 15, Paulina, 11, and Hulda, 9. The ages of Louis and Barbara are greatly exagerated. Their years of marriage, 25, would appear to be a round number. They immigrated in 1886, and Barbara had given birth to seven children, five of whom were living. The elder Louis was a farmer, and the younger Louis a farm laborer on the home farm. All of the children attended school.[13] Nearby on the census record, and in the same township, the record reported eldest son Martin Sonnenberg with his own farm. Martin was 22, a farmer. His wife, Friedericka, a German from Russia, had come to America in 1889 (actually the year of her birth). They had one child, a daughter, Elma, aged seven months at the time of the census (15 April).[14]

The 1920 Census reported Ludwig and Barbara Sonnenberg, ages 66 and 56, in the village of Martin, Georgetown Township. All the children were gone, and Ludwig no longer had employment.[15] Son Martin Sonnenberg had moved to Hettinger County, North Dakota, with his wife, and now five children. He worked as a blacksmith with his own shop.[16] Son Ludwig, now married and with two children, had moved to the city of Minot, Ward County, North Dakota, where he labored for the railroad.[17] Daughter Caroline lived on a farm in Georgetown Township with her husband, William Fetzer, and their three children. William, a German from Russia, had come to America in 1909.[18] I have not found daughter Pauline in this census. Daughter Hulda lived with her husband Jacob Hausauer in Gransville Township, Sheridan County. The two of them were a distinct household at the same residence as Jacob's parents, John and Katherine Hausauer. Jacob, a German from Russia, came to America in 1906.[19]

By the time of the 1930 Census, Ludwig had died, and Barbara would live only nine more days. Martin owned a hardware store in Cannon Ball Township, Hettinger County, where he lived with his wife and eight children.[20] Son Ludwig resided at Velva, McHenry County, with his wife, three children, and his mother Barbara. He worked in a blacksmith shop.[21] Caroline Fetzer, her husband and five children, farmed in Township 150-75, Sheridan County.[22] Paulina and her husband of seven years Adolph Dockter farmed in Township # 148, Sheridan County; no children yet.[23] I have not found Hulda in this census, but her two children, Clarence, 9, and Warren, 7, lived with their grandparents, John and Katherina Hausauer, at Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota.[24]

The 1940 Census reported Martin still in Cannon Ball Township, with his wife and five children, where he again operated a blacksmith shop. Son Harold was absent, working for the Bureau of Animal Industry as a common laborer.[25] Ludwig, his wife and two children, lived at Donnybrook, Ward County, where he operatd his own blacksmith shop.[26] Two of their children were no longer at home: Eleanor lived in Burlington, Ward County, with her husband, Wilbert Vise, who was a coal miner.[27] Robert, who would spend most of adult life in the Army Air force and then the Air Force, was a soldier stationed at Moffett Field, Sunnydale, Santa Clara County, California.[28] Carolina and William Fetzer continued to farm in Sheridan County, with their five youngest children at home.[29] Paulina and Adolph Dockter farmed in Sheridan County, with their nine-year old son, Elroy.[30] Hulda was now Hulda Ystad, 38, divorced, living with her two sons in Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon.[31] So between the 1920 and 1940 censuses, Hulda's first husband either died or divorced, she married again, and was divorced from her second husband.
