MARY MARGARET5 SUNDAY (Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob2, Hans Adam1) was born at Pennsylvania on 11 December 1829 a daughter of Daniel Sunday and his wife Catherine Rheinhart, and died at Steuben County, Indiana, on 25 November 1885.[1] She married at Seneca County, Ohio, on 12 November 1848 JOHN HARPSTER.[2] He was born at Wayne County, Ohio, on 18 July 1828 and died at Steuben County on 3 April 1888.[3]

Born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, Mary Margaret was the eldest of eight children. When she was about three years old, Mary moved with her parents and younger brother to Ohio. There she grew up, and at the age of eighteen married John Harpster, a native of Ohio. The 1850 Census reported John and Mary and their first child, Amos, at Scipio Township, Seneca County.[4] However, by 1854 they had moved to Steuben County, and there they remained. John Harpster worked as a blacksmith according to the 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses, a farmer according to the 1870 Census. John and Mary Harpster had at least seven children. However the first and third children died in 1856, the year of birth of their fourth child.

In 1860 the John Harpster family was reported in Salem Township, Steuben County, next to her father's family. The Harpster family consisted of John, 31, Mary, 30, Lucinda, 8, John, 4, amd Mary, eight months.[5]

In 1870 this family was again reported at Salem Township, consisting of John 42, Mary, 40, young John, 14, young Mary, 10, Della, 8, and Emma, 6.[6] This listing agrees with other data if "Della" in Emma Dell, and "Emma" is Amanda. Eldest daughter Lucinda had married the year before.

John, 51, and Mary, 50, Harpster, were again reported at Salem Township in the 1880 Census. Daughters Mary, 21, and Amanda, 18, were still at home, as were son John and his new wife, Olive, both 24.[7] To agree with our other information, Amanda should have been sixteen. Della Harpster, 18, was working as a domestic in another home.

Mary Margaret Sunday and her husband John Harpster had the following children:

  1. AMOS6 HARPSTER b. at Ohio on 15 May 1849; d. on 25 October 1856.[8]
