DANIEL5 SUNDAY (Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob2, Hans Adam1) was born at Seneca County, Ohio. on 10 May 1843 a son of Daniel Sunday and his wife Catherine Rheinhart, and died at Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan, on 17 March 1920.[1] He married at DeKalb County, Indiana, on 8 January 1865 SUSANNA LIGE.[2] She was born at Ashland County, Ohio, on 11 September 1842, a daughter of Samuel Lige and Eliza J. Osborn. She died at Grant, Clare County, Michigan, on 18 June 1915.[3]

Daniel Sunday spent his earliest years on a farm in Ohio, where he was the sixth of eight children. When he was twelve years old his family moved to Steuben County, Indiana. According to his obituary, "There he grew to manhood and helped clear up the farm and put it under cultivation."[4] At the time of the 1860 Census, only Daniel, 17, and his younger sister Mary, 13, remained on the farm in Salem Township, Steuben County, with his parents. All of Daniel's older siblings had married. Daniel worked on the farm, his sister Mary was described as an "idiot."[5]

Susanna Lige was born in Ohio, but in the year of her birth her family moved to DeKalb County, Indiana, where they farmed.[6]

Daniel and Susanna married in 1865 and settled near her family, in DeKalb County (Auburn Post Office), where they were reported in the 1870 Census, with their first two children, Ira, 2, and Lewis, 1.[7]

Later in 1870 the family moved to Fayette County, Illinois, where Daniel cleared a farm for tillage. They had two more children born in Illinois. However, this residency was not good for Susanna's health. Her obituary would later report: "Mrs. Sunday has been a patient sufferer for many years, having lost her health during a period of years the family lived in Illinois." In 1875 the family moved back to DeKalb County; three years later they moved to the Sunday homestead in Steuben County.[8]

The 1880 Census reported Daniel Sunday, 37, farming in Salem Township, with wife Susannah, 37, sons Ira, 13, Louis, 11, and daughters Eve, 8, and Margaret, 5. Both boys were working on the farm; all four children attended school.[9]

Two more children were born to this family, in spite of Susanna's health issues: Isa in 1880 and Carra in 1882. Eve and Lewis married in 1890, Ira in 1896. The remainder of the family moved to Clare County in 1899. Daughter Margaret married in Michigan later that year.

The 1900 Census reported Daniel Sunday, 57, a farmer, in Grant Township with his wife, Susanna, 56, and daughters Ida, 19, and Cara, 17.[10] Son Ira had moved to Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, where he and his wife lived with her mother, and he taught in the business department of a college.[11] Lewis and his family farmed in Arthur Township, Clare County.[12] I have not located the other children in that census, but based in the birthplaces of their children, Eva was in Steuben County in 1900 and Margaret was in Clare County in 1901.

Carra married in 1901, Isa in 1903. Daniel and Susanna remained in the farm in Grant Township, where they were reported in the 1910 census.[13] After Susanna's death in 1915, Daniel lived with his children. He died in 1920 at the home of his daughter, Carrie Mates, in Alma.[14]

Susannah's obituary praised her faith:[15]

Mrs. Sunday has been a Christian many years, having first identified herself with the United Brethren church at Mt. Zion, Steuben Co. She loved her children with a true mother's love, no sacrifice being too great to make for them.

Her pleasant smile, her many deeds of kindness and her faith and trust in God, have been an inspiration to all who knew her. In all her years of suffering she has uttered no word of complaint, knowing that the afflictions and sufferings of this world are not to be compared with the glories of the life eternal. She can truly say with Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his offering.'’
