Anderson and Christensen Ancestors
of Jeanette (Anderson) Sonnenberg (1926-2004)
Anderson - Second Generation

ENOCH ANDREW2 ANDERSON (Soren1) was born at Emmetsburg, Palo Alto County, Iowa, on 16 August 1894[1] a son of Soren Anderson and his wife Lena Christensen. He died at Minot, Ward County, North Dakota, on 15 December 1965.[2] He married at Burke County, North Dakota, on 27 June 1918 MARGARETHE MARIE CHRISTENSEN.[3] She was born at Clay County, Iowa, on 12 January 1894, a daughter of Christen L. Christensen and his wife Andrea L. Nelson. She died at Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota, on 3 April 1983.[4]

Enoch Anderson, the fourth of nine children, spent his earliest years on a farm in Iowa. Margaret Christensen, the second of nine children, also spent her earliest years on a farm in Iowa. Both moved with their families to North Dakota about 1900 when they were about five or six years old. They both continued to grow up on farms in Richland Township, Burke County, and after marriage farmed in that Township, not far from Margaret's parents.

Enoch registered for the draft on 5 June 1917. He requested exemption "by being more useful on farm than war." He was tall, medium build, with blue eyes, and light brown hair.[5] When he registered for the draft of the next war, 27 April 1942, he was reported 5' 10" tall, 180 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde hair.[6]

The 1920 Census reported Enoch Andrew Anderson, 25, grain and stock farmer, and his wife Margaret Marie, 25, living in Richland Township,[7] recorded five intervening households away from her parents. At that time, married for a year and a half, they had no children.

The 1930 Census reported their growing family at Richland Township:[8]

The son here called "Julian" is everywhere else called Sylvan. Sybil Jeanette always went by her middle name. This record further indicated that Enoch and Margrethe, when they married, were 23 and 24 years old, respectively. Only one household intervened between this family and Margrethe's parents.

By the time of the 1940 Census, another child had been born, and the eldest child had left. They continued to farm in Richland Township:[9]

Further information on this census record; Enoch owned his home, valued at $1000. Sylvan had been unemployed for forty weeks; his was government work; over the past year he had worked 14 weeks and earned $124. The remaining four children were all in school.

According to the family, Curtis died in a tractor accident at the age of fifteen, Sylvan died in heart surgery at the age of thirty-seven, and Marcia died from liver cancer when she was fifty-seven.[10] Marcia's death certificate said, "hepatic failure due to cholangio carcinoma."[11]
