Christensen Ancestors

CHRISTEN L. CHRISTENSEN was born at Fauderup, Prussia, on October 1867 a son of Knud Christensen and his wife Margarethe Nichaliasen.[1] He died on 1951.[2] He married about 1891-2 ANDREA LYDIA NELSON.[3] She was born at Denmark about April 1868,[4] a daughter of Nels Nelson and his wife Andrea Jacobsdaughter. She died on 1933.[5]

Christen Christensen was born in a Danish village called Fauderup in German and Foverup in Danish. It was part of the principality of Schleswig, which in 1866 (the year before Christen's birth) was annexed by Prussia, and in 1871 became part of the new nation-state of Germany. After World War I, plebiscites were held, and northern Schleswig, which included Foverup, voted to be part of Denmark, which occurred in 1920. This explains some of the confusion in some records. For example, in 1900 the census taker wrote Schleswig for his birthplace, then crossed it out and wrote Germany; other census takers wrote Denmark for his birthplace. All recognized his mother tongue was Danish. Foverup is about 20 kilometers west of Aabenraa.

I have no further information on the parents of Christen and Andrea.

Andrea Nelson came to America about 1882, at the age of fourteen or fifteen. Christen Christensen came to America about 1888, at the age of twenty.[6] They married about 1891-2, and were reported in the 1895 Iowa State Census living in Lincoln Township, Clay County, Iowa. The family consisted of Christ Christensen, 27, Andrea, 26, Philip, 2, and Maggie, 1. Christ was a farmer, the family was Lutheran.[7]

Christian Christensen was naturalized as a citizen in 1896. By 1900 the family had grown to include five children, and they moved to Ward County, North Dakota, where the census found them:[8]

This record presents several problems. It gives Andrea's birthplace as Iowa, while it lists a year of immigration for her, and every other record gives her birthplace as Denmark. It also states that she had given birth to five children, six of whom were living. This can't be. It is also improbable that the numbers were reversed, as there is not an interval between births of her children long enough for two pregnancies. The document lists Christian's year of immigration as 1887, and Andrea's as 1883, which is consistent with other sources. Two of the sons more often used their middle names. "Knut P." called himself Philip, and "Neil E." was Nels Enos or Nels Enoch, and he more often went by Enoch. The name of Christian's brother is difficult to read, and could be Soren. He came to America in 1893. Also, keep in mind that Ward County was subdivided after this census, and they could have been living in that portion of Ward County that became Burke County.

The family continued to grow, and was reported in 1910 at Richland Township, Burke County, as follows:[9]

This record further states that C. L. and Andrea had been married 18 years, Andrea had nine children, all of whom were living, and the couple came to America in 1887 and 1882 respectively. Daughter Margaret, who would have been sixteen, is missing from this list of children, and I have not found her elsewhere in the census. The most likely explanation is that she was "working out," living with another family where she was helping.

The United States entered war in April of 1917, and young men were called upon to respond. The young men of the Christensen family responded in different ways. 5 June 1917 was set aside as the day to sign up for the draft. Knud Philip Christensen reported at Flaxton, Burke County, requesting exemption for "wife and child dependent." He was a self-employed farmer and auto garage owner, tall, slender, with blue eyes and light brown hair.[10]

Nels Enoch Christensen reported at Richland Township, and requested exemption because, "its against my religion to go to war and kill anyone." He was single, working on his father's farm, tall and slender with light blue eyes and light brown hair.[11]

George Thomas Christensen enlisted in the Army on 4 June 1918. Sent overseas on 14 August 1918, he was assigned to the 418th Motor Supply Train, participated in offensives at St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne, promoted to Corporal in October, and died of pneumonia in France on 9 October 1918.[12]

When Iver Andrew Christensen signed up for the draft on 12 September 1918 the form no longer had a line for exemption request. Iver was single, working on his father's farm, medium height, medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair.[13]

By the time of the 1920 Census, the family had changed a great deal. Philip, Margaret, and Enoch had all married and George was dead. The Christian Christensen family was reported in Richland Township as follows:[14]

Philip Christensen was reported at Flaxton, Richland Township, 27, grain farmer, with his wife Martha, also 27, and their son Donald, 10 months old.[15] Margaret Marie, 25, also lived in Richland Township with her husband, Enoch Anderson, 25, a grain and stock farmer.[16] Nels Enoch Christensen was located in the census record with only five intervening households between his and his parents' households in Richland Township. He was 24, a grain and stock farmer; his wife Laura Christina was 26, their daughter Georgia Laura was one year old.[17]

The family continued farming in Richland Township. In 1930 the census taker found Christ L. Christensen, 62, farming there with his wife Andrea, 61, son John, 28, also a farmer, and daughters Zipporah, 26, and Lydia, 20. Zipporah was absent from the household at the time of the census.[18] Son Philip Christensen, 37, farmed in the township with his wife Martha, 37, and children Donald, 14, and Gerald, 2 years and 3 months.[19] Margaret, 36, lived in the township with her husband, Enoch Anderson, farmer, 35, and children Audrey, 10, Julian, 8, Eunice, 5, Jeanette, 4 years and 2 months, and Curtis, newborn.[20] Enoch Christensen, 34, was also farming in the township, with his wife, Christina, 36, and their children, Georgia, 11, Myrtle, 10, Carlyle, 5, Shirley, 1 year and 8 months, and Della, 2 months.[21] Iver Christensen, 31, had moved into Flaxton, where he worked as a grain buyer for the elevator. With him were his wife, Myrtle, 31, and children, Gwendolyn, 8, Betty, 7, and Donna, 2 years and 11 months.[22] I have not identified daughter Gertrude in this census.

The "dirty thirties" were devastating for North Dakota, but the Christiansen family, for the most part, hung on. Andrea (Nelson) Christensen died in 1933. I have not been able to identify her widower Christen nor the three youngest daughters in this census. Philip Christensen had left the farm and moved into Flaxton, where he worked as manager of the farmers' bulk oil station. The family consisted of Philip, 47, Martha, 47, Gerald, 12, and Peggy, 4.[23] Margaret, 46, lived with her husband, Enoch Anderson, 45, who continued to farm in the township. Children at home were Sylvan, 18, Eunice, 15, Jeanette, 14, Curtis, 11, and Marcia, 6.[24] Enoch Christensen also continued to farm in the township. With him at home were his wife, Christina, 46, children Carlyle, 15, Shirley, 11, Della, 10, Ruth, 6, and married daughter Myrtle Paulson, 20, with her husband Merrill Paulson, 26.[25] Enoch's daughter Georgia, 21, had married Richard Iverson, 22, and they lived in Flaxton with their newborn son Gary. Richard Iverson, unemployed, got government work on the county highway.[26] Iver Christensen, 41, and family had moved to Williams County, North Dakota, by 1935, but in 1940 resided in the village of Borup, Winchester Township, Norman County, Minnesota. This is in the Red River Valley very close to North Dakota. Iver worked as a buyer for the local grain elevator. With him were his wife, Myrtle, 41, and children Gwen, 18, Betty, 17, Donna, 12, Claude, 8, and Carol, 5. [27]
