Line of Descent from
Ann (Holland) (Bassett) Burt
(1606-1672/3)
to
Carrie (Bassett) Brooks
(1868-1963)

Before we begin to trace this line of descent, we need to recognize that there is a weak link. If this link is incorrect, than everything before it is invalid. Let's first look at this weak link:

Question: Was Morris Basset (b. 1800) the child of Samuel (b. 1760) and Elizabeth (Keen) (b. 1762) Bassett?

Contradicting information

Reflections: The identification of a person's parents on their death record is an invaluable source that provides tremendous help to the genealogist. However, it is only as good as the informant, replying to questions in a time of emotional stress. On other lines of ancestry, I have gone on wild goose chases looking for parents, named on a death record, who never existed. So I will not treat the information on the death record as infallible.

The United States Census for 1800 reported only one Lewis Bassett, who lived in Baltimore, Maryland, age between 26 and 44. The 1810 Census does not list a Lewis Bassett. However, the New Jersey sections of these two censuses are missing.

Conclusions: Nothing is proven. More research is needed. The absence of any information to document the existence of Lewis and Caroline Bassett in Pennsylvania any time around 1800, causes me to not trust the information given on the death record. The use of given names supports the undocumented statement of the Bassett Family Association. I will go with saying Morris Bassett is possibly a child of Samuel and Elizabeth.

FIRST GENERATION

ANN 1 HOLLAND was born at England about 1606, and died at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 7 March 1672/3. She married first at Dorking, Surrey, England, on 27 April 1623 ROGER BASSETT. He was born about 1603 and died before 1635. She married second before 1635 HUGH BURT. He was baptized at Dorking on 9 August 1590, a son of John Burt, and died at Lynn on 2 November 1661. Hugh had previously married before 1614 URSULA ________, who was buried at Dorking on 3 October 1628.[1]

William Bassett was baptized at Saint Martin's Church, Dorking, in 1624, a child of Roger Bassett and his wife Ann Holland. Roger and Ann had married at that church thirteen months before, ages 20 and 17. At some point in William's childhood his father died, leaving his mother to raise William as a single parent. Then, at another undetermined date, before William had reached the age of eleven, his mother married Hugh Burt. Hugh had seven children by a previous marriage, however only three lived to adulthood.

This blended family enrolled for passage to New England on 17 June 1635, on the Abigail. The ages given on the enrollment record are not entirely accurate. The family that embarked consisted of Hugh Burt, 44, Ann, 29, Hugh Burt, Junior, 13, Edward Burt, 9, and William Bassett, 11. The remaining family member, John Burt, 18, remained in England. They settled in Lynn, where Hugh Burt farmed.

Hugh and Ann (Holland) (Bassett) Burt had a few encounters with the law in Massachusetts.

Ann Holland and her first husband Roger Bassett had the following child:

  1. WILLIAM2 BASSETT bp. at Dorking on 30 May 1624.

Hugh and Ursula Burt had the following children:[2]

  1. ALICE BURT bp. at Dorking on 26 December 1614.
  2. JOHN BURT bp. at Dorking on 5 January 1616/7; bur. there on 27 January 1637/8.
  3. WILLIAM BURT bp. at Dorking on 2 May 1619; d. there on 16 May 1619.
  4. HUGH BURT bp. at Dorking on 21 October 1621; d. before 1661; m. before 1647 SARAH JOHNSON, bp. at Ware, Hertfordshire, England, on 12 November 1624. Sarah m(2). before July 1653 WILLIAM BARTRAM.
  5. URSULA BURT bp. at Dorking on 12 December 1623; bur. there on 25 October 1628.
  6. EDWARD BURT bp. at Dorking on 9 July 1626; m. before 1657 ELIZABETH BUNKER.
  7. (stillborn) BURT bur. at Dorking on 2 October 1628.

SECOND GENERATION

WILLIAM2 BASSETT (Ann Holland1) was baptized at Dorking on 30 May 1624, a son of Roger Bassett and his wife Ann Holland. He died at Lynn on 31 March 1703. He married about 1646 SARAH ________.[3]

William Bassett married Sarah and they had twelve children. Lindberg, in her article on the Bassett family, states that William's wife was Sarah Burt, a daughter of his step-father, Hugh Burt, by his first wife. Anderson, in his articles, does not give a maiden name for Sarah. Part of the confusion is from Hugh Burt's will, where he calls William Bassett his son. Of course he was not literally a biological son, but had grown up as a son in his family. Lindberg takes the reference to mean son-in-law, while Anderson interprets it as step-son. Lindberg argues that Hugh Burt had an additional two children, Sarah and Mary. However a closer examination of his will shows that these were in fact his granddaughters, children of his late son Hugh. So William Bassett's wife was not his step-sister. Whoever she was, Sarah had a busy life, giving birth to twelve children in twenty-four years.

William Bassett held positions of trust in Lynn. He was electred constable on June 1666, and served as one of the Selectmen of the town from 1673 to 1681. At the time of King Philip's War, he served from December 1675 to February 1675/6 as a Sergeant in Capt. Joseph Gardner's company in the expedition against the Narragansetts.

The year 1692 was a year of great stress and tragedy for the Bassett family. They were no strangers to accusations of witchcraft, but in one year's time, accusations came crashing down upon them. William and Sarah's daughters, Elizabeth (Bassett) Proctor and Mary (Bassett) Rich (or Derich), their daughter-in-law Sarah (wife of William), son-in-law John Proctor, and grandchildren Sarah and William Proctor were all accused of witchcraft. Mary Rich and Sarah Bassett were sent to prison in Boston on 23 May 1692. John Proctor was executed on 19 August 1692. Elizabeth was not executed because she was pregnant at the time. After a new royal governor arrived, prisoners were released and charges were dropped. however a strugle for the restoration of rights and property lingered for several years.

William Bassett wrote his will on 10 February 1701/2 and it was proved on 22 May 1703. In the will he remembered:

William Bassett had eleven children who survived him.

William and Sarah Bassett had the following children:[4]

  1. ELIZABETH3 BASSETT b. about 1647; m(1). at Salem, Essex County, on 1 April 1674 JOHN PROCTOR, d. at Salem on 19 August 1692. Elizabeth m(2) (int. at Lynn on 22 September 1699) DANIEL RICHARDS. John Proctor had m(1). at Ipswich, Essex County, on1653 MARTHA HARPER and m(2). at Ipswich ELIZABETH THORNDIKE.

  12. HANNAH3 BASSETT b. about 1679; m. before 1691 JOHN LILLE.

THIRD GENERATION

ELISHA3 BASSETT (William2, Ann Holland1) was born at Lynn about 1662 a son of William and Sarah Bassett. He married about 1688 ELIZABETH COLLINS. She was born on 8 April 1666, a daughter of John Collins and Abigail Johnson. She died at Pilesgrove.[5]

Elisha Bassett was about thirty years old when the torrent of the witch trials swept through his extended family. Elisha had been married about four years, and his third child was born that year. Sometime after the birth of their fourth child, in 1694, Elisha and Elizabeth and family moved to New Jersey. He served as constable of Salem, Salem County, from 1705 to 1713.

Elisha Bassett and his wife Elizabeth Collins had the following children:[6]

  1. HANNAH4 BASSETT b. at Lynn on 15 December 1689 ; d. at on ; m. at on , b. at on, d. at on, child of .
  2. ELIZABETH4 BASSETT b. at Lynn on 15 April 1691; m. PETER KEENE.
  3. ELISHA4 BASSETT b. at Lynn on 21 August 1692.
  4. DANIEL4 BASSETT b. at Lynn on 20 October 1694, d. between 19 September (will) and 2 November (probate) 1745; m. before 1722 MARY LAWRENCE.

FOURTH GENERATION

ELISHA4 BASSETT (Elisha3, William3, Ann Holland1 ) was born at Lynn on 21 April 1692 a son of Elisha Bassett and his wife Elizabeth Collins. He died at Pilesgrove on 1786. He married at Pilesgrove about 1717-8 ABIGAIL ELIZABETH DAVIS. She was born at Long Island, New York, on 1698, a daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Davis. She died at Salem County on 30 December 1770.[7]

Elisha Bassett had migrated from Massachusetts to New Jersey as a child with his parents. He married Abigail Davis, who had also migrated to New Jersey as a child, in her case from Long Island. They had a connection to the Salem Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of friends, as Abigail's death was noted in their records.

Elisha Bassett and his wife Abigail Davis had the following children:[8]

  1. SARAH5 BASSETT b. at Pilesgrove on 1719; d. on 21 March 1776; m. at Pilesgrove on 3 February 1740 THOMAS SMIRH.
  2. ELIZABETH5 BASSETT b. at Pilesgrove on 23 April 1720; m. at Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey, on 12 April 1742 THOMAS DAVIS, b. at Pilesgrove on 13 February 1719/20.
  3. ELISHA5 BASSETT, Jr. b. at Pilesgrobe on 15 February 1723; m. MARY WOODNUT.
  4. REBECCA5 BASSETT b. at Pilesgrove on 1724; d. on 17 March 1779; m(1). on 25 January 1745 JOHN PAGE. Rebecca m(2) after 1763 WILLIAM SILVER.

  8. RACHEL5 BASSETT b. at Pilesgrove on 1736; m. ANDREW MILLER, b. on 1732.
  9. ISAAC5 BASSETT b. at Pilesgrove on 1738; d. on 1834; m. on 7 June 1764 DEBORAH DUNN, b. on 6 April 1745.

FIFTH GENERATION

SAMUEL5 BASSETT (Elisha4-3, William2, Ann Holland1 ) was born at Pilesgrove on 1728 a son of Elisha Bassett and his wife Abigail Davis, and died at Salem County between 1 October 1777 (will) and 23 October 1784 (probate). He married before 26 December 1757 ANN MORRIS, a daughter of Lewis Morris and his wife Sarah Fetters. She died on 26 March 1776.[9]

Samuel Bassett was a fuller, that is, a person who prepares woolen cloth for use. Samuel was a participant at Salem Monthly Meeting, Religious Society of Friends; however he was dismissed from the meeting on 26 December 1757 for marrying contrary to discipline - that is, for marrying a non-Quaker. Perhaps there was a reconciliation, as the births of their children were recorded by the meeting.

Samuel Bassett and his wife Ann Morris had the following children:[10]

  1. GRACE6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 16 March 1756; m. on 27 October 1774 SAMUEL WITHERS.
  2. WILLIAM6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 4 February 1758; m. SARAH KEEN, b. on 8 February 1768, child of Peter and Catharine Keen.
  3. SAMUEL6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 30 August 1760.
  4. MORRIS6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 30 April 1763.
  5. DAVIS6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 3 August 1765.
  6. ANN6 BASSETT b. at Salem County on 5 January 1767.

SIXTH GENERATION

SAMUEL6 BASSETT (Samuel5, Elijah4-3, William2, Ann Holland1) was born at Salem County on 30 August 1760 a son of Samuel Bassett and his wife Ann Morris . He married ELIZABETH KEEN. She was born at Pilesgrove on 3 April 1762, a daughter of Peter and Catharine Keen.[11]

I have discovered very little information on this Samuel Bassett. He married Elizabeth Keen at an unidentified date. He paid taxes at Pilesgrove on June, 1793.

Samuel Bassett and his wife Elizabeth may have had the following child:

  1. MORRIS7 BASSETT b. at Pennsylvania on 15 July 1800.

SEVENTH GENERATION

MORRIS7 BASSETT (Samuel6-5, Elisha4-3, William2, Ann Holland1) was born at Pennsylvania on 15 July 1800, possibly a son of Samuel Bassett and his wife Elizabeth Keen. He died at Bridgeton on 14 November 1874. He married before 1830 REBECCA ROSS. She was born at New Jersey on 10 July 1804 and died at Bridgeton on 25 April 1888.[12]

Morris Basset was described as a master shearer in 1850, an engineer in 1860, and clerk for iron manufacturing in 1870. Census records placed him in Franklin Township, Gloucester County, in 1840 and 1850, in Bridgeton in 1860 and 1870. The 1850 reported the family when all three children were still at home:[13]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
33. Morris Bassett 45 M master shearer PA
34. Rebecca Bassett 41 F NJ
35. Jane Ann Bassett 19 F NJ
36. George W. Bassett 17 M NJ school
37. Samuel Bassett 7 M NJ school

Both sons became glass blowers. Bassett Branches included the following information on son Samuel Morris Bassett:

The second glass plant erected in Elmer in 1896 was built by Samuel M. Bassett of the Cumberlin Glass Works of Bridgeton and was referred to as the "S.M. Bassett Glass Works" and the "Elmer Glass Works". It was located on a plot 1/4 mile north of the Elmer depot on the West Jersey and Sea Shore railroad line. Bottles and battery jars were listed as the main products. The plant operated for several years before being sold to the operators of The Gilchrist Jar Company in 1899.... After World War I, the Bassett glass house property and its adjoining land, was purchased by the borough and turned into a community park to honor the soldiers who served in the war. [14]
Elmer is a small borough in Salem County, northwest of Vineland.

Morris Bassett and his wife Rebecca Ross had the following children:[15]

  1. JANE ANN BASSETT b. at New Jersey about 1830-1.
  2. GEORGE W. BASSETT b. at New Jersey about 1832-3.
  3. SAMUEL MORRIS BASSETT b. at New Jersey on 15 July 1844; d. at Ocean City, Cape Mahy County, New Jersey, on 27 November 1914; m. at Bridgeton on 24 December 1863 JANE CARL, b. at New Jersey about 1845-6. Children of Samuel and Jane:
    1. Viola Bassett b. at New Jersey about 1867-8.
    2. Adell Bassett b. at New Jersey about February 1870.

EIGHTH GENERATION

GEORGE W.8 BASSETT (Morris7, Samuel6-5, Elisha4-3, William2, Ann Holland1) was born at New Jersey about 1832-3 a son of Morris Bassett and his wife Rebecca Ross. He died sometime after 1910. He married before 1856 AGNES J. ________. She was born at New Jersey about 1836-7 and died at Bridgeton on 15 October 1889.[16]

George Bassett was a glass blower. He moved several times, perhaps in search of work. The 1860 Census reported the family in Verona, Oneida County, New York, consisting of George, 27, glass blower, Agnes, 24, Morris, 4, and Louisa [Laura], 1.[17]

The 1870 Census reported the family at Upper Alloways Creek, Salem County, as follows:[18]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
30. Bassett, George N. 37 M W glass blower $ 200 NJ
31. Bassett, Agnes 33 F W keeps house NJ
32. Bassett, Morris R. 13 M W at home NJ
33. Bassett, Laura 10 F W at home NJ
34. Bassett, James C. 6 M W NJ
35. Bassett, Carrie @ F W NJ

The 1880 Census found the family at 22 Oak Street, Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania:[19]

Line Name Race Sex Age Related MS Occupation B FB MB
7. Bassett, George W. W M 47 M glass blower NJ NJ NJ
8. Bassett, Agnes W F 43 wife M keeping house PA VT CT
9. Bassett, Laura W F 20 daughter S music teacher NY NJ PA
10. Bassett, James C W M 16 son S at school NJ NJ NJ
11. Bassett, Carrie W F 12 daughter S at school NJ NJ NJ
12. Bassett, Rebecca W F 9 daughter S NJ NJ NJ

Son Morris Bassett had married earlier in the census year, lived with his in-laws in Norristown, and worked as a glass blower.[20] Another child, Nellie, had been born at Millville, Gloucester County, in 1875. Her absence from this census suggests that she had died. The identification of the states of births of Agnes' mother and father, neither supported nor contradicted from other evidence, suggests areas for possible research.

Agnes (________) Bassett died at Bridgeton in 1889. George W. Bassett, widower, born at New Jersey in September 1830, window glass blower, resided at the time of the 1900 Census in a boarding house at Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania.[21]

The 1910 Census reported George Bassett living with his son in Chautauqua town, Chautaugua County, New York, as follows:[22]

Line Name Related Sex Race Age MS B FB MB Occupation
14. Bassett, Morris K. head M W 53 M1 NJ NJ PA glass blower, glass works

16. Bassett, George father M W 79 Wd NJ NJ NJ none
17. McMullen, John brother-in-law M W 54 S PA Ireland Ireland laberor, on farm

I have not found a record of George Bassett's death.

George and Agnes Bassett had the following children:[23]

  1. MORRIS R.9 BASSETT b. at New Jersey about 1855-6; d. at Mayville, Chautauqua County, New York, on 5 November 1918; m. at Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on 12 January 1880 MARY JANE McMULLEN, b. at Norristown on 16 February 1856, d. at Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, on 7 March 1940, child of John McMullen and Rosette Hodge.
