ALFRED JOHN3 BROOKS (Alfred2, Francis1) was born at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, on 17 April 1868 a son of Alfred John Brooks and his wife Fannie Rieff. He died at Vineland, Cumberland County, New Jersey, on 28 July 1942.[1] He married about 1886-7 CARRIE BASSETT.[2] She was born at Upper Alloways Creek, Salem County, New Jersey, on 20 February 1868, a daughter of George W. and Agnes Bassett.[3] She died at Vineland on 4 January 1963.[4]

Alfred Brooks, the oldest of fourteen chidren, married at the age of 18 or 19, before two of his siblings had been born. Most of his early years were spent in Cumberland County, first at Millville, then at Landis Township, next to the boro of Vineland. Carrie was the fourth of six children. Her father was a glassblower, and they moved several times, The 1880 Census reported her family at Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.[5] The 1885 New Jersey Census reported them at Bridgeton, Cumberland County.[6] According to the 1940 Census, Alfred completed 6th grade and Carrie completed 2nd.[7]

The Alfred Brooks family lived in Landis Township all their lives, in close proximity to some of Albert's siblings. In sharp contrast to their families of origin, they had only one child. Albert, like his father and father-in-law, worked as a glass blower, as reportred in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.[8] However the 1915 New Jersey state census called him a farmer,[9] and the 1930 Census described him as a gardiner.[10] He was well known for his gladiolas. According to her death record, Carrie's occupation was "quality clothes, hand work."[11] Alfred's obituary, published in 28 July 1942, reads:[12]
