I have only been able to trace these Carpenter ancestors as far as Samuel P. Carpenter (born 1799). According to Palmer Families in America Samuel was the child of Jacob and Esther (Palmer) Carpenter.
JACOB CARPENTER married ESTHER6 PALMER (Samuel5-4-3, James2, William1). She was born at Dutchess County, New York, on 14 February 1776, a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Palmer. She died before 19 June 1844.[1]
Esther Palmer grew up in Dutchess County, the oldest of nine children. She died before 1844, as she is not included in a list of living children of Samuel by her brother Moses, administrator of their father's estate.
Jacob Carpenter and his wife Esther Palmer had the following children:
SAMUEL P.7 CARPENTER (Esther Palmer6, Samuel5-4-3, James2, William1) was born at Nine Partners on 19 November 1799 a son of Jacob Carpenter and his wife Esther Palmer, and died on 19 November 1861. He married at Delaware County, New York, on 1821 ROXANNA LOWDEN. She was born at Windsor, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 14 August 1799, a daughter of Susannah Lowden. She died on 18 May 1877.[2]
The westward migration of the Samuel Carpenter family was told by two of his sons in History of Steuben County, Indiana, published in 1885. This book is typical of many such county histories of that era, in that it contains biographical information on many families of the county, submitted by those families. Genealogists call them brag books. These accounts provide us with a first or second hand account of events, but are not always accurate. The article on son James Carpenter, provided when James was sixty-one years old and in the last year of his life, reads:[3]
James N. Carpenter, one of the early settlers of Steuben County, Ind., was born in Schoharie County, N. Y., July 24, 1824, a son of Samuel and Roxanna (Lowden) Carpenter, his father a native of New York and his mother of Connecticut, both born in 1797. They were married in New York in 1820 and in 1826 moved to Delaware County, Pa., and thence, in January, 1829, to Portage County, Ohio. In February, 1843, they came to Steuben County, Ind., making the journey with teams, and coming by the way of Michigan. There were no roads nor bridges, and the way was rough. They settled in Scott Township, on a tract of timber land, moving into a rude log cabin that was found there. There was two feet of snow on the ground and nearly as much on the upper floor of their cabin. They lived in this rude cabin till one could be built on section 19. There was no tame hay in the county, and as their stock would not eat marsh hay, they were obliged to cut basswood for it to browse on till spring. They then began to clear the land and prepare to raise a crop of corn. Mr. Carpenter became widely known in the county, and was one of the most prominent and influential citizens. In religion he was liberal in his views, but was an upright moral man. He died in 1859. The mother died in 1880. They had a family of eight children, but four of whom are living--James N., Harriet, Uriah and Sarah; Orissa C., Eliza, Alexander and Almond are deceased. James N. Carpenter was reared in the wilderness of Steuben County, and educated in the pioneer schools. . . .
|
Son Urial Carpenter, age fifty-five at the time of this biographical account, had slightly different memories:[4]
Urial Carpenter was born in Portage County, Ohio, March 16, 1831, a son of Samuel and Roxana Carpenter, natives of New York and Massachusetts respectively. In 1842 his parents came to Steuben County and settled on section 13, Scott Township. His father died in December, 1861, aged sixty-two years, and his mother in May 1877, aged seventy-seven years. Seven children accompanied their parents to Steuben County--Orson died in Jackson Township; James N., of Angola; Mrs. Harriet Coe; Urial; Mrs. Sarah Tyler of Angola. Mrs. Eliza Tyler and Alexander are deceased. |
There are a few discrepancies in these two accounts. We know from other sources that Samuel was born in New York, and Roxanne in Massachusetts, both in 1799. The reference to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is possible, but it is more likely that Delaware County, New York, where they were married, is intended. Uriel has the correct death dates of his parents, as reported on their grave markers. James states that his parents had eight children, according to Urial they were accompained on their journey to Indiana by seven children. The difference is Almond, who could have died before their journey to Indiana in 1843. Also, James called one of their children Orissa, a girls name, while Uriel called that child Orson, a boy's name. The 1840 Census indicated a male child under the age of five, not otherwise identified.
Roxanna (Lowden) Carpenter was born on 14 August 1799 according to her grave marker. She was baptized at the Congregational Church in Windsor on 13 October 1799. That record identified her mother as Susannah Lowden but did not give a father's name.[5] This often indicates that the mother was not married; however it could also indicate that the father was not a church member. The 1800 Census reported a John Lowden living at Windsor, with a family consisting of a man and a woman between the ages of 26 and 44, and three girls and a boy under the age of ten.[6] Susanna had three girls and a boy baptized in the years 1798 and 1799. This would appear to be a match. Children of Susannah Lowden baptized at the Congregational Church of Windsor were:[7]
Samuel and Roxanna were married in Delaware County according to information placed on the findagrave website. In 1829 they migrated to Ohio. The 1830 Census found them at Edinburgh, Portage County, Ohio. That census reported a family consisting of a man 30-39. a woman 20-29, two boys 5-9, and a girl 0-4.[9] According to our information from other sources, Samuel and Roxanna were both 30, James was 5, and Harriet, 2. Perhaps the other boy 5 to 9 is Almond.
The 1840 Census reported the family at Edinburgh.[10] The following chart lists the age and sex categories and the possible identity of each:
age and sex | possible identity |
40-49 male | Samuel, 40 |
40-49 female | Roxanna, 40 |
15-19 male | James, 15 |
15-19 male | Almond ? |
10-14 female | Harriet, 12 |
5-9 male | Uriel, 10 |
5-9 female | Elise, 6 |
5-9 female | Sarah, 5 |
0-4 male | Alexander, 4 |
0-4 male | Orson ? |
Almond may have died before their treck West in 1842 or 1843. Orson probably died soon after. The 1850 Census found the family in Scott Township, Steuben County:[11]

Daughter Harriet, 22, had married, and was reported on the census immediately before her parents, with her husband, Orrin Wilkinson, 27, farmer, and their three sons, Almon, 3, Milo, 2, and Alanson, 1.[12] Son James, 25, farmer, also lived in Scott Township, with his wife, Eugenia, 28, and their daughter, Roxanna, 1.[13]
By the time of the 1860 Census, all the children had left. Samuel Carpenter, 60, farmer, and Roxanna Carpenter, 60, resided at Scott Township (Angola, Steuben County Post Office). With them was Rosamond Crawford, 62, born in Massachusetts; is she Roxanna's sister? The household also included Peter Otto, 25, farm laborer.[14] The children were reported as follows:
Samuel Carpenter died in 1861. Roxanna was still living in 1870, but I have not found her in the census of that year. I have found the following family members:
Samuel Carpenter and his wife Roxanna Lowden had the following children:[25]
Child of Harriet and Ransom:
URIEL M.8 CARPENTER (Samuel7, Esther Palmer6, Samuel5-4-3, James2, William1) was born at Edinburgh on 16 March 1830 a son of Samuel Carpenter and his wife Roxanna Lowden, and died at Scott Township, Steuben County, on 29 May 1914. He married at Steuben County on 1 March 1857 CHRISTIANA (SOWLE) LEACH. She was born at New York on 17 January 1832, a daughter of Durfee Sowle and his wife Margaret Colsoman. She died at Scott Township on 25 November 1907. Christiana had previously married at Portage County on 12 June 1846 COTTON M. LEACH. He was born at Pennsylvania about 1821-2.[26]
Christiana Sowle was born in New York, probably Montgomery County. She moved with her family when she was nine years old, to Portage County, Ohio. If our data is correct, she married at the tender age of fourteen, Cotton Leach, who was about twenty-five years old. She had at least two children, the first when she was eighteen, the second at twenty-one.
I don't know what happened to Cotton Leach. In 1854 Christiana's parents and siblings migrated to Steuben County, Indiana. In 1857 Christiana married Uriel Carpenter in Steuben County. Christiana was twenty-five, Uriel twenty-six, Christiana's two children were six and three.
Uriel and Christiana lived and farmed in Scott Township. There they had three children. History of Steuben County in 1885 described Uriel as follows:[27]
Urial Carpenter was reared to the life of a farmer, remaining with his parents till twenty-five years of age. He has always followed agricultural pursuits, and now owns 230 acres in section 13, where he has lived since 1867. The greater part of his land is improved, and his residence and farm buildings are large and commodious and in good repair. He is one of the substantial men of the township, a practical, energetic farmer, and a successful businessman. His farm shows the care of a thrifty and enterprising owner. He was married March 7, 1853, to Christeann Sowle, a native of Montgomery County, N. Y., born Jan 17, 1833, daughter of Durfee and Margaret Sowle, who settled in Scott Township in 1854, where they both died. They have three children--Elroy N., Wilbur J., and Lora M. In politics Mr. Carpenter is a Democrat.

The 1860 Census reported Uriel Carpenter, 29, farmer, in Scott Township with Christie A. Carpenter, 28, John Leach, 10, and Ella Leach, 6.[28] The two Leach children both married about 1869-70, as a result the 1870 Census reported a changed family in Scott Township:[29]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |

21. | Carpenter, Wilbur | 5 | M | W | IN | |||
22. | Carpenter, Sara M. | 2 | F | W | IN |
Elroy and Wilbur were both in school. "Sara" is probably a misreading of the penmanship for "Lora."
The 1880 Census found the family composed the same and at the same place:[30]

The census takers continued to have problems with Lora's name. This same census found John Leach, 30, teamster, residing in Angola with his wife Mary, 30, and their daughter, Edna, 8.[31] Ellah (Leach) Cole, 27, lived in Scott Township with her husband Charles Cole, 31, farmer, and thir children, Owen, 9, Christian (daughter), 7, Jacob, 2, and Ethel, three months.[32]
Elroy married in 1883, Wilbur in 1888, and Lora about 1888-9, leaving Uriel and Christiana with an empty nest. However the chics had not flown very far. In the 1900 Census,
Christiana (Sowle) (Leach) Carpenter died in 1907 from pneumonia.[37] The 1910 Census reported
Christiana (Sowle) (Leach) Carpenter is a descendant of George Soule of the Mayflower.
Christiana Sowle and her first husband Cotton Leach had the following children:[43]
Christiana Sowle and her second husband Uriel Carpenter had the following children:[44]
ELROY J.9 CARPENTER (Uriel8, Samuel7, Esther Palmer6, Samuel5-4-3, James2, William1) was born at Scott Township on 4 February 1861 a son of Uriel Carpenter and his wife Christiana Sowle, and died at Angola on 5 July 1905. He married at Steuben County on 22 February 1883 ELLEN M. GOODELL. She was born at Michigan on 23 September 1864, a daughter of William M. Goodell and his wife Mary Olmsted. She died at Angola on 15 November 1945. Ellen married second at Steuben County on 20 June 1911 ALBERT E. SWANGER, who was born at Cass Township, Richland County, Ohio, on 10 September 1853, and died at Angola on 9 July 1930. Albert had previously married on 15 May 1880 IDA A. COLEMAN, who was born at Indiana on 16 January 1863 and died at Lee Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, on 14 February 1909.[45]
Elroy Carpenter grew up on a farm in Scott Township. Ellen Goodell was born in Michigan, but at the age of about one year she came with her family to Fremont, Steuben County, where her father worked as a "drayman"--that is, someome who drove a flat-bed wagon for the transportation of goods. Elroy and Ellen married when he was twenty-two and she was eighteen. The 1900 Census found them in Scott Township:[46]

The record also indicated that Elroy and Ella had been married seventeen years, and that she had three children, two of whom were living. The interval of almost nine years between the births of the two daughters could be the period in which the other child was born.
Ellen and Elroy had two more children - sons -- in the two and a half years after that census. In 1905 Elroy Carpenter died from disease of the liver, age forty-four.[47] His widow, age forty, was left with children ages 20, 11, 4, and 2. Daughter Leona married in 1909. The 1910 Census reported the surviving family in Angola:[48]

In 1911 widow Ellen (Goodell) Carpenter, 46, married widower Albert Swanger, 57. Ellen brought into the marriage children ages 17, 10 and 6. Albert's daughter by his first marriage, Belva Swanger, was 26. The following year, 1912, Belva married; in 1913 Lena Carpenter married, leaving only the two boys at home. The 1920 Census reported the following household in Scott Township:[49]

16. | Carpenter, Clyde U. | son | M | W | 17 | S | IN | IN | MI | laborer, farm |
Albert Swanger is no where to be found, but Ella is listed as married. She would appear to be handling a farm with her two teen-age boys.
Clynt married in 1922, Clyde in 1925. Ella Carpenter, 65, widow, was reported in Angola, in the 1930 Census, in the household of Sherman (64) and Anna (55) Frazier. Ella's role in the household was "servant," she was a practical nurse working for a private family,[50] probably the family with which she lived. With regard to the children in the 1930 Census:
Albert Swanger died at Angola three months after the 1930 Census. His death record described hiw as a widower. The record of Ella in the census and Albert's death record give the impression that they were divorced, and Ella went back to her surname from her first marriage. They were both widowers in that their first spouses had died.
Ellen (Goodell) Carpenter died in 1945. I have not found her in the 1940 Census. The street address of her residence on her death record is the same as the address of her daughter, Leona (Carpenter) Sunday, and the informant of the death record was Carl Sunday, Leona's husband.[55]
Elroy Carpenter and his wife Ellen Goodell had the following children:[56]
Ellen (Goodell) Carpenter's second husband, Albert Swanger, had the following child by his first wife Ida Coleman:
