Second Generation

WILLIAM M.2 GOODELL (John1) was born at England on 15 September 1822 a son of John Goodell and his wife Elizabeth Mead, and died on 31 July 1888. He married at Waterville, Oneida County, New York, on 31 December 1851 MARY FIDELIA OLMSTED. She was born at Waterville on 31 October 1828, a daughter of Walter Hills Olmsted and his wife Mary Bennett. She died at Angola, Steuben County, Indiana, on 17 December 1908.[1]

History of Steuben County, Indiana, published in 1885, provided an outline of William's life. There are some inaccurcies, which need to be corrected from other sources.[2]

William M. Goodell is a native of Oneida County, N.Y, born Sept. 15, 1822. . . . He was reared in his native county on a farm, receiving a limited education. He was married in Waterville, Oneida Co., N.Y., Dec. 31, 1851, to Fidelia Olmsted, a native of Waterville, born Oct. 31, 1828, a daughter of Walter and Mary (Bennett) Olmsted. To them have been born five children, three of whom are living--Ira, Ella, wife of Elroy Carpenter, and Ray. Walter died Jan 14, 1853, and Adelbert April 12, 1857. In March 1860, Mr. Goodell removed to Camden, Hillside Co., Mich., and in the spring of 1865 to Fremont, where they have since resided. . .

In fact, William was born in England, probably Yorkshire, where his parents lived and were married. The oldest of nine known children, William came to America at the age of eight, with his parents and three younger sisters. They settled in Westmoreland, Oneida County, where his father farmed.

The 1850 Census reported William Goodell, 26, single, working as a laborer and living in the household of Albert Seymour, manufacturer, in Westmoreland.[3] Mary Fidelia Olmsted, almost always called Fidelia, the oldest of at least six children, also lived in Oneida County. They married in 1851, when he was twenty-nine and she twenty-three. Their first two children died in probably in infancy.

By the time of the 1860 Census (June 1), this Goodell family had moved to Camden, Hillsdale County, Michigan (Sylvanus Post Office), where the census reported Wm. Goodale, 32, farm laborer, born in England, Fidelia, 31, born in New York, and Ira, 1, born in New York.[4]

According to the biography above, they moved to Fremont, Steuben County in 1865. I have no reason to question this: daughter Ellen was born in Michigan in 1864, son Ray was born in Steuben County in 1872. I have not been able to find them in the 1870 Census.

The 1880 Census located the family in Freemont village, Steuben County, as follows:[5]

Line Name Race Sex Age Related MS Occupation B FB MB
42. Goodell, William W M 62 M drayman England England England
43. Goodell, Mary F. W F 53 wife M keeping house NY NY NY
44. Goodell, Ira W. W M 21 son S at home NY NY NY
45. Goodell, Ella W F 14 daughter S at school MI NY NY
46. Goodell, Ray W M 7 son S IN NY NY

In looking at census records, we have to get used to sloppy recording. William Goodell was born in England, even though the birthplaces of the father of his children was reported as New York. A drayman was the driver of a dray, a low, flat-bed wagon without sides, pulled generally by horses or mules, that were used to transport all kinds of goods.

The family went through transition in the following years. Ellen married in 1883, Ira in 1886. William died in 1888. Ray married about 1894-5. The 1900 Census reported widow Fidelia Goodell living alone in LaSalle, LaSalle County, Illinois, the city to which her two sons had moved:[6]

Line Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
45. Goodell, Fidelia head W F Oct 1828 Wd NY CT NY

The record also indicated that she had given birth to five children, three of whom were living. Fidelia Goodell died in 1908 at Angola from pneumonia.[7]

Son Ira Goodell was reported in the 1900 Census at LaSalle, where he worked as a file clerk for the railroad. He was 41, his wife, Harriet, 36, daughters Cecile and Hazel ages 9 and 6 respectively.[8] Harriet died in 1909. Ira was reportred in the 1910 Census, a single parent living at Moline, Rock Island County, illinois, age 50, working as a cashier at a freight depot; daughter Cecile worked as a milliner, Hazel, 16, was still in school.[9] In 1925 he married widower Estella (Todd) Barhart; he was 66, she 53. The following obituary fills in more detail of his life:[10]

Ira Goodell, 89, Retired Railroad Cashier, Is Dead

Ira W. Goodell, 89, of 1933 Eleventh avenue court, Moline, retired cashier for the Rock Island railroad in Moline, died at 9 Saturday night in Moline Public Hospital. He had been ill since February. . . .

Mr. Goodell was born Oct. 13, 1858, in Utica, N.Y. He moved to Peru, Ill., in about 1881, and entered the employ of the Rock Island lines as a freight house helper shortly afterwards. After working for the railroad in Peru and in LaSalle, he came to Moline April 9, 1901; he was cashier at the Moline freight house. He retired in 1931.

He married Harriet Turner in LaSalle June 16, 1886; she died Sept. 13, 1909. He married Mrs. Estella Barnhart Oct. 7, 1925, in Moline; she died February 15 of this year.

Mr. Goodell was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carl Parlier and Mrs. Dana Mavity, both of Moline; four grandchildren and three great-grndchildren.

Son Ray Goodell also lived in LaSalle at the time of the 1900 Census. He worked as a freight clerk, age 27. With him were his wife Florence, also 27, their son William, 3, and Florence's parents, J. H. Robinson, 53, painter, and Maggie, 51.[11] We can trace the family through the following censuses:
