William Wright Collins and Selina Hibbert, Immigrants
and some of their Descendants
Second Generation

ESTHER2 COLLINS (William1) was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, on 16 January 1853 a daughter of William Wright Collins and his wife Selina Hibbert . She died on 2 December 1921. She married at Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 26 September 1872 JAMES HOLLINGSWORTH. He was born at Valley Falls, Cumberland, Providence County, on 23 January 1850, a son of Elijah Hollingworth and his wife Hannah Duncalf. He died at Pawtucket on 23 December 1908.[1]

James Hollingsworth was born one year after his family had arrived in America. Three years later Esther was born, six years before her family came to America. Their families both came from Ashton-under-Lyne. Their fathers came to America together in 1848, but Esther's father returned to England, while James' father remained in New England and was joined in a few months by the rest of his family. Both families settled in Rhode Island and found employment related to the textile industry.

In 1870 Esther, age 17, was living with her parents in Pawtucket;[2] I have not found James in that census; his family was also living at Pawtucket. James and Esther were married in 1872 by Constantine Blodget, retired Congregational minister, Pawtucket.[3] This was four years after James' sister Elizabeth had married Esther's brother Henry. The 1880 Census found the family in Pawtucket, consisting of James, 29, machinist, Esther, 27, keeping house, and Arthur, 6, at school.[4]

The 1900 Census reported the family at 3 Abram Street, Pawtucket, as follows:[5]

33. Hollingworth, Arthur son W M Nov 1873 S RI RI England physician

The record also indicated that Esther had been in America 40 years, she had two children, both living, and she and James had been married twenty-seven years. Son Arthur had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and was completing an internship at Rhode Island Hospital.

James Hollingworth died in 1908, at the age of fifty-eight, from chronic endocarditis, chronic nephritis, and arteriosclerosis.[6] The 1910 Census reported Esther Hollingworth living in her own apartment in the same dwelling as her nephew William W. Collins[7] (son of her brother Henry and sister-in-law Elizabeth). Her son Arthur, married and with four children, lived at 593 Broad Street, Providence, Providence County, as follows:[8]

At this point I loose track of daughter Grace, until she appears in her brother's obituary as Mrs. Harry B. Potter, living at London, Middlesex County, England.

Esther died in 1921. Arthur had a notable career as a physician, as illuminated by his obituary:[9]

Dr. Hollingworth Dies at 86 in North Scituate

Dr. Arthur Hollingworth, 86, of East Road, North Scituate, died at his home yesterday morning after a short illness.

He was a native of Pawtucket, son of the late James and Esther (Collins) Hollingworth, and was educated at schools there before attending Brown University. He was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1898.

In 1901 he set up general practice in Providence after internship at Rhode Island Hospital, later specializing in surgery. Dr. Hollingworth is often credited with the first successful cancer operation in Rhode Island, and the first successful blood transfusion.

Entering semi-retirement in 1934, Dr. Hollingworth transferred his practice to North Scituate where he retired in 1940. He had been a consultant at Rhode Island Hospital since his retirement. From the time he entered practice until 1940 he was on the staff of the hospital.

A member of the Rhode Island Medical Society and the American Medical Association, he was also a former member of the Providence Art Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Mann) Hollingworth; a daughter, Miss Ruth M. Hollingworth of Providence; three sons, Duncalf W. of Yardley, Pa., Robert C. of Cranston, and Harold H. Hollingworth of East Providence; a sister, Mrs. Harry B. Potter of London, England, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. . . .
