Hollingworth Family

ELIJAH1 HOLLINGWORTH was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, on 5 January 1815, and died at Lincoln, Providence County, Rhode Island, on 25 November 1888. He married at Oldham, Lancashire, on 13 November 1836 HANNAH DUNCALF. She was born at Lancashire on 1 April 1816, a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Duncalf. She died at Lincoln on 16 January 1886.[1]

Hannah Duncalf was baptized at Saint Michael's [Anglican] Church of Ashton-under-Lyne on 12 May 1816.[2] Their marriage took place at Oldham, about five miles north of Ashton-under-Lyne. Both communiuties were centers of cotton textile manufacturing. The 1841 Census reported them living with Hannah's mother on Portland Street, Ashton-under-Lyne:[3]

Name Sex Age occupation Birthplace
Charlotte Duncalf F 60 county
Elijah Hollingworth M 25 cotton mill operative not b. county
Hannah Hollingworth F 25 cotton mill operative county
Joseph Hollingworth M 3 county
Harriet Hollingworth F 1 county
Mary Wood F 30 cotton mill county
John Wood M 7 county
Charlotte Wood F 5 county
William Marma M 15 cotton mill Ireland

Note that the ages of all the adults are divisable by 5. This rounding is probably the result of the census taker estimating ages rather than asking for a precise age. I don't know why the census taker reported Elijah as not born in the county, as we know from his birth record that he was. Perhaps Mary Wood was another daughter of Charlotte Duncalf.

The records of Saint Michael and the Angels Church, Ashton-under-Lyne, report the baptisms of the following children of Elijah and Hannah Hollingworth:[4]

Elijah Hollingworth came to America on the Harriet Augusta, which departed from Liverpool, England, and arrived at New York, New York, on 24 March 1848. His name appears on the manifest immediately after his townsman William Wright Collins.[5] Collins soon returned to England, but Hollingworth remained in America and was soon joined by his family. Hannah Hollingworth, 35, and her children Joseph, 9, Ann, 5, and Elizabeth, 1, arrived at New York on 25 January 1849 abord the St. Patrick, which had sailed from Liverpool.[6] Daughters Harriet and Sarah had probably died in England. A Harriet Hollingworth died at Ashton-under-Lyne in the first quarter of 1842,[7] and Sarah Hollingworth, age 15 months, was buried at St. Peter's Parish, Ashton-under-Lyne, on 24 May 1846.[8] I cannot be absolutely sure that these were the children of Elijah and Sarah, as Hollingworth was a very common name in that area. However, it does appear probable.

The Hollingworth family, called "Jollywood" by the census taker, appeared in the 1850 Census at Cumberland, Providence County. The family consisted of Elijah, 35, spinner, Hannah, 25, Joseph, 13, Ann, 8, Elizabeth, 3, and James, six months.[9] James had been born in Cumberland a year ofter his mother's arrival in America.

In 1860 the Elijah Hollingworth family appeared in Franklin, New London County, Connecticut (Lords Bridge Post Office) in the census, reported immediately before the family of John Ramsbotton. "Fac" was an abbreviation for factory worker:[10]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace

2. Anne Hollingworth 44 F housekeeper England
3. Ann Hollingworth 17 F Fac England
4. Elizabeth Hollingworth 14 F England
5. James Hollingworth 10 M England
6. Alice Hollingworth 7 F England
7. Charlotte Hollingworth 5 F England

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
8. John Ramsbottom 44 M Fac $500 England
9. Anna Ramsbotton 44 F housekeeper England
10. Ann Ramsbottom 26 F Fac England
11. Mary Ramsbottom 23 F Fac England
12. Myra Ramsbottom 20 F Fac England
13. Maria Ramsbottom 18 F Fac England
14. Joseph Hollingworth 27 M Fac England
15. Marden Hayes 20 M Fac England

Perhaps the census taker did not ask for the birthplaces of all the children; we know that the youngest three Hollingworth children were born in America. From the birthplaces given for the children in other sources, we know that the Hollingworth family lived at Cumberland in 1850, but had moved to Connecticut by 1852. The record also reported that the four youngest Hollingworth children were attending school. Joseph Hollingworth and Ann Ramsbottom would soon marry, as their only child would be born in January 1861.

The Hollingworth family was back in Cumberland (West Wrentham, Massachusetts, Post Office) in 1870. The family consisted of Elijah (mistakenly called Elizabeth by the census taker), 55, Hannah, 55, Ann, 25, Alice, 18, and Charlotte, 15. All five of them worked in a cotton mill. Charlotte also was attending school.[11] Elizabeth had married in 1868. The 1870 Census found her husband, Henry Collins, living with his parents at Pawtucket, Providence County, and Elizabeth in the same dwelling listed as a member of the family of Henry's sister, Sarah Ford.[12] I have not found Joseph Hollingworth in the 1870 Census, but in the 1875 Rhode Island state census he was reported at Pawtucket, age 37, machinist, with his wife Ann, 39, and their daughter Martha, 14, born in Connecticut.[13] I also have not found James Hollingworth in the 1870 Census.

James Hollingworth married in 1872 to Esther Collins, sister of Henry Collins, the husband of Elizabeth Hollingworth. So a brother and sister had married a sister and brother. Alice married in 1873.

The 1880 Census found the Elijah Hollingworth family living on River Road, Lincoln. The family consisted of Elijah (called Eli), 66, Hannah, 65, daughter Ann, 38, housekeeper, daughter Charlotte, 24, factory worker, daughter Alice Tomlinson, 28, factory worker, and grandson Frederick Tomlinson, 5. Under occupation, Elijah and Hannah were described as "at home," indicating they were retired.[14] The next household, also on River Road, consisted of Joseph Hollingworth, 41, Ann, 45, and Matilda, 19. Joseph and Matilda (eleswhere called Martha), were both factory workers.[15] Elizabeth lived at Pawtucket with her husband and four children.[16] James also lived at Pawtucket with his wife and their first child.[17]

Hannah died in 1886 at the age of sixty-nine; Elijah died in 1888 at the age of seventy-three. The families of Elizabeth and James are described elsewhere in the Collins genealogy. With regard to the other children and their families:
