First Generation

JOHN GOODELL was born at Yorkshire, England, on 21 October 1799, and died probably at Oneida County, New York, on 10 April 1886. He married at Hackness, Yorkshire, on 18 May 1822 ELIZABETH MEAD. She was born at Yorkshire on 2 February 1800, and died probably at Oneida County on 16 April 1885.[1]

The biography of John and Elizabeth's son William, reported:[2]

His father, John Goodell, was born in Yorkshire, England, Dec. 19, 1799, and was married May 1, 1821, to Elizabeth Mead, a native of the same county, born Feb. 2, 1800. They are living [1885] in Oneida County, having had a married life of sixty-four years. They are the parents of nine children - Sarah, Mary, Isabel, Jane, Adeline, Myra, William, Daniel, and Robert (deceased). William M. Goodell is the eldest son.

John Goodell's birth date based on his death date and age at death on his grave stone, was 21 October 1799, a small difference from the report in the above biography. I cannot discern which is correct.

According to the 1855 New York State Census, John and Elizabeth Goodell had lived in the town of Westmoreland, Oneida County, for twenty-five years,[3] which would place their arrival about 1829-30. However, daughter Isabel, according to the 1900 Census, was born at England on March 1830. Daughter Jane, according to that 1855 Census, was born at Oneida County about 1831-2. These records together indicate an arrival of the family in America probably late in 1830, with an almost immediate settlement in Oneida County. All census records report John Goodell to be a farmer in Westmoreland.

The 1850 Census reported the family at Westmoreland as follows:[4]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
8. John Goodell 50 M farmer $ 3550 England
9. Elizabeth Goodell 49 F England
10. Jane Goodell 18 F NY school
11. Robert Goodell 16 M farmer NY school
12. Myra Goodell 11 F NY school
13. Adeline Goodell 8 F NY school
14. Daniel Goodell 5 M NY school

William Goodell, the eldest child, also lived in Westmoreland, a laborer at the residence of Albert Seymour, manufacturer.[5] Daughters Sarah and Mary do not appear in this or any census. However, they were living when John wrote his will (1880) and when William's biography was written (1885). Most likely they had already married. Not knowing their married names, I cannot trace them.

William married in 1851, Isabel in 1855, and Jane about 1857-8. As a result the 1860 Census reported a smaller household of John Goodell, 60, Elizabeth, 59, Robert, 25, Myra, 20, Adeline, 17, and Daniel, 15.[6] William had moved to Camden, Hillside County, Michigan, where he lived with his wife and one child.[7] Jane and her husband Lemuel Smith were reported on the census adjacent to her parents in Westmoreland.[8] I have not located Isabel.

Adeline married in 1860, Myra in 1864, leaving only the youngest sons, Robert and Daniel, on the farm with John and Elizabeth in the 1870 Census. However, Jane, and her husband Lemuel Smith were close by.[9]

Daniel married in 1871; Robert died in 1873. The 1880 Census found John Goodell, 80, farmer, and his wife Elizabeth, 79, still at Westmoreland, aided in their household by Mary Mahoney, a servant, William Kessler, farm hand, and Ann Shall, a teacher boarding with them.[10] Of the children:

In his will, dated 15 March 1880, John Godell left benefices to:
