ISAAC BROWN was born at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 14 October 1814 and died on 1 November 1888.[1] He married CHRISTIANA SHROAT. She was born at Lancaster County on 24 February 1819 and died on 19 September 1869.[2]
According to the 1840 Census the Isaac Brown family resided in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, consisting of a female 20-29, male 15-19 and two females under 5.[3] Except for the underestimate of Isaac's age, this is consistent with other information we have on this family. Perhaps the census taker checked the wrong column for Isaac's age.
In 1850 the family was reported at Strasburg Township as follows:[4]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
7. | Isaac Brown | 26 | M | laborer | |||

The 1860 Census reported a much enlarged family living in Eden Township (Quarryville Post Office), Lancaster County:[5]

Henry, John and Samuel were all attending school. Daughter Mary Catharine was working as a servant in the household of Benjamin and Susan Hess, Providence Township, Lancaster County.[6]
Christiana died in 1869; I have not found this family in the 1870 Census. In 1880 Isaac Brown, 65, widower, was living in Drumore Township with his youngest daughter, Catharine, 19, keeping house.[7]
Concerning the children of Isaac and Christiana: Because Brown is such a common surname, the identification of persons with this family is difficult. Nine children surnamed Brown were reported in this family in the 1850, 1860 or 1880 censuses. Adam and Stephen, twins, lived less than a year, and so were not reported in a census; their inclusion is based on the grave record. Louisa and Susan are identified as children of this family on their death records. Susan is also mentioned as a surviving sibling in the obituaries of Mary Catharine and Henry.[8] Mary Catharine's obituary also mentions a Mrs. Barbara Brown of Philadelphia. In fact, Mrs. Louisa Brown of Philadelphia would have been her surviving sister. The death record for Anna Elizabeth gives her a birthdate only two months before Mary Catharine's birth date. As all of the census records point to an earlier birth for Ann Elizabeth, I have interpreted this to mean that the death record was one year off. The birth dates of Susan and Catharine are close; there is nothing in their names to suggest they are the same person; perhaps they were twins. Anne Elizabeth had four children, three of whom were living at the time of the 1900 Census.[9] As no children are reported in her family in that census, and she had only been married to her spouse for twelve years, it is likely that she had an earlier marriage that produced the children.
Isaac Brown and his wife Christiana Shroat had the following children:
