Johnson Line

Clara May (Johnson) Howett's grandfather, William Johnson, was born at Virginia in 1810. By 1840, and probably earlier, he resided in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There is one Johnson in the area who is a candidate for William Johnson's father: John Johnson, reported in Bart Township, Lancaster County, in the 1830 Census. Probate records for a John Johnston of Bart township, dated 20 January 1838, mention three children, the heirs of John: William, Margaret and Mary. It was not unusual for the surnames Johnson and Johnston to be used interchangeably at that time. This is the best candidate for a father of William Johnson, but it is not proven.

Most records indicate William Johnson was born in Virginia, although some list Pennsylvania or Maryland. Daughter Elnora, in the 1900 Census reported her father was born in West Virginia. West Virginia did not exist as a state until 1863. It is not unusual for a person to remember someone's birthplace in the political unit existing at the time of the report, rather than at the time of birth. The 1810 Census reported forty John Johnsons in Virginia, five of whom were in counties that later became West Virginia. Two of these reported a male under the age of ten and a male between thirty and forty: John Johnson of New Point, Wood County, and John Johnson of Monroe County. It is possible one of these could be the family of our William Johnson, but, again, nothing is proven.

JOHN1 JOHNSON was born between 1770 and 1780 and died at Lancaster County before 20 January 1838. His wife has not been identified.

If this John Johnson was the father of William, listed below, he lived in Virginia in 1810. The 1830 Census reported John Johnson in Bart Township; the family consisted of a male 50-60, a male 30-40, a female 20-30, and a male 10-15.[1] This is not congruent with the other information we have on this family.

John Johnson's death was reported to the Lancaster County Probate Court on 20 January 1838. Johnson owned 99 acres in Bart Township. The record lists the heirs as William Johnston, Margaret Johnston, and Mary Johnston.[2] The record does not mention a widow, so his wife must have died before him. The two daughters are listed by their maiden name, indicating they were not yet married.

John Johnson had the following children:

  1. WILLIAM2 JOHNSON b. at Virginia on 16 July 1810.
  2. MARGARET2 JOHNSON.
  3. MARY2 JOHNSON.

WILLIAM2 JOHNSON (possibly John1) was born at Virginia on 16 July 1810 possibly a son of John Johnson. He died at Lancaster County on 24 June 1879.[3] He married ELEANOR McCOLGAN. She was born at Pennsylvania on 31 March 1819, a daughter of Thomas and Ann McColgan. She died on 25 September 1902.[4]

William and Eleanor Johnson lived and farmed in Drumore Township, in proximity to members of her family. The 1850 Census reported this Johnson family in between Eleanor's father and brother. In 1840 William Johnson purchased from his in-laws, Thomas and Ann McColgan, 11 acres and 11 perches of land in Drumore Township. He later purchased from his father-in-law another 7 acres and 140 perches.[5]

William and Eleanor Johnon had twelve children in twenty-five years, all of whom lived to adulthood. The 1850 Census reported William Johnston, 40, laborer, Ellin, 28, Benjamin, 10, Stephen, 7, Lutticia, 5, Lucinda, 3, Ellen, 1, and Mary, 1 month.[6]

The 1860 Census reported a much expanded William Johnson family at Drumore Township (Chestnut Level Post Office), including Eleanor's father, and an African-American family:[7]

The two eldest sons, Benjamin and Stephen, both married, then went off to war, then returned safely. The 1870 Census reported the William and Eleanor Johnson family in Drumore Township (Greene Post Office), immediately before the Stephen Johnson family, as follows:[8]

Eldest son Benjamin died in a quarry accident in 1874, reported in the Intelligencer Journal:[9]

A Terrible Accident--Our correspondent at Quarryville, sends us the particulars of a terrible accident, which occurred near that village yesterday, at the limestone quarries of Mr. W. F. Hess, on the premises of Mrs. D. B. Eckman. This quarry, known as the "Mowrer Bank," is worked by Messrs. Stephen Johnson, Benjamin F. Johnson, and Henry Mayhew. Yesterday about 5 o'clock P.M., they put off a "squib" for the purpose of shattering a large mass of rock which had been thrown down by a previous blast. The men had retired to the usual distance and were watching the blast with their faces turned toward the sun. The fragments of stone were thrown unusually far and, blinded by the rays of the sun, Benjamin F. Johnson failed to see and was unable to escape a large stone which, falling, struck him on the hip and bore him to the ground. The stone, which contained about a cubic foot, struck him on the pelvis and crushed the crest to a perfect mass of fragments. Medical attendance was at once summoned and the unfortunate man was carried to his home in the vicinity of Quarryville, where his injuries were attended by Drs. H. E. Raub and W. J. Wentz. A large number of the fragments of the bone were removed, though large ones still remain. The injured man retained consciousness and bore his sufferings with courage. He lies in a very critical condition, and at last accounts his recovery was uncertain. Mr. Johnson is a very industrious, honest and highly respected man.--He is a prominent member of the Masonic Order and the lodge of Odd Fellows and in his present affliction has the sympathy of the whole community.

Benjamin died three days later, leaving his young widow with a one year old child.

William Johnson died in 1879. His will follows:[10]

Why did he name only one of his twelve children in the will? He refers to "my children" in the plural elsewhere. Perhaps there was some reason he expected Letitia Jane to be more dependent, and she did remain unmarried.

In the decade of the 1870s Lucinda, Elanora, Elizabeth, William and Melinda all married. The 1880 Census found widow Elanore Johnson, 61, living in Drumore Township with her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Eberly, 29, and Daniel Eberly, 29, carpenter, and their daughter, Lessie Eberly, 3. Also in the household were widow Elanor's children, Letitia, 34 and Virginia, 13. The census record also listed a William Johnson, 78, servant.[11] Perhaps this is some distant relative? Of the other children:

Fay Sue Johnson, called "Icie," married John Findley some time after 1880. Their daughter Blanche was born in January of 1884. Icie died in November of that year, at the age of 24. Blanche was raised by her Aunt Lucinda and Uncle John McMichael,[18] who had no children of their own.

STEPHEN J.3 JOHNSON (William2, possibly John1) was born at Drumore Township on 26 November 1840 a son of William Johnson and his wife Eleanor McColgan. He died at Quarryville on 17 May 1906.[41] He married about 1861-2 MARY CATHARINE BROWN.[42] She was born at Lancaster County on 5 January 1840, a daughter of Isaac N. Brown and Christiana Shroat. She died at Quarryville on 21 October 1929.[43]

Stephen Johnson grew up in Drumore Township, the second of twelve children. Mary Catharine Brown grew up in Strasburg Township, the second of eleven children. They married about 1861-2 and soon had two children.

Stephen Johnson served in the Army during the Civil War. For one year, beginning in 1864 and ending in 1865, he served in Company D of the 195th Regiment of the Pennsylvania volunteer Infantry.[44] This regiment guarded Union instllations in West Virginia and Maryland, and did not actually see combat.

Important dimensions of the life of Stephen Johnson were summarized in his obituary:[45]

Stephen J. Johnson Dead
Wellknown Resident of Quarryville Expires in His Chair

Stephen J. Johnson of Quarryville, died very suddenly at his home in that place on Thursday evening. While he has been in poor health for the last few years, he was able to walk around and entertain his friends. Several had called on him during the afternoon and about five o'clock he started for his room, where it was noticed he was very weak. He suddenly sank into a chair and died. He was born and raised in Drumore, was sixty-six years old and the son of William Johnson, one of Conowingo Furnace's old woodchopers and later a farmer.

In early life Stephen worked for his father, but was for many years a lime burner.

He served a term in the army during the Civil war in the 195th Pennsylvania regiment.

Coming home from the army he went into the lime business again. When that began to decline he went into butchering at his home, in Oak Bottom, at the western end of Quarryville, and soon had a large business. About twelve years ago his son-in-law, Galen Fritz, was associated with him and their business was one of the best in the county. On account of failing health he sold his interest in the firm to Martin Fritz and retired. He also disposed of all of his property and moved into Quarryville this spring. He was a good businessman and had a great reputation as a butcher. He did much to improve his section. building a good portion of Oak Bottom.

He was one of the original founders of the Grand Army post at Quarryville and always took great interest in it.

In politics he was an ardent Democrat and in religion he was a member of Mt. Hope Methodist church.

His funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home of Galen Fritz, in Quarryville, and services will be held at Mt. Hope M. E. church at 2:30, and his body will be interred in the cemetery at that place.

His wife was Mary Brown, and she survives him, as well as three daughters, Mrs. Herman Howett, of Lancaster; Mrs. Jacob Aument, of Lancaster; and Mrs. Galen Fritz. Four sisters also survive: Eleanor, wife of A. A. Brogman, of this city; Elizabeth, wife of David Eberly, of Mount Hope; Malinda, wife of Emory Barr, and Miss Letitia Johnson, both of near Mount Hope.

Friday was buried at Quarryville John I. Lefever, the old comrade of Stephen, and it seems singular that they should die so close together. For years they had truly been comrades; in fact for more than a year before John's last illness he lived with Steve and a year ago, when the latter had a severe spell of sickness, John was his nurse and faithful attendant.

Widow Mary (Brown) Johnson lived for almost another twenty-three years. She stayed with her daughter and son-in-law Clara (Johnson) and Henry Martin, who cared for her.[46]

Stephen Johnson and his wife Mary Catharine Brown had the following children:

  1. CLARA MAY4 JOHNSON b. at Quarryville on 20 July 1862.
  2. EFFIE T.4 JOHNSON b. at Lancaster County on 18 April 1864; d. at Lancaster on 26 October 1929; m. about 1883-4 JACOB AUMENT, b. at Lancaster County on 21 January 1860, d. at Lancaster on 18 December 1926, child of Elane Aument and Agnes Kline.[47] Children of Effie and Jacob:[48]
    1. Ella Aument b. at Pennsylvania on December 1885, d. at Lancaster on 2 March 1910.
    2. Agnes C. aument b. at Pennsylvania on July 1888[ m. Clement Rineer.
