GABRIEL WATSON married MARGARET BURNS.
The only information I have on this couple is their identification as the parents of Oliver Watson in the Herr genealogy.[1]
Gabriel Watson and his wife Margaret Burns had the following child, perhaps others:
OLIVER WATSON (Gabriel) was born at Pennsylvania on 30 July 1802 a son of Gabriel Watson and his wife Margaret Burns.[2] He died at Lower Chancelford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, on 1 June 1865.[3] He married on 16 June 1825 MARY B. (BARR) HARSH.[4] She was born at Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 30 July 1803, a daughter of Jacob Barr and his first wife Anna Bowman.[5] She died at Eden Township, Lancaster County, on 24 November 1882.[6] Mary had previously married on 1819 JOHN HARSH, who was born on 1792 and died on 1823.[7]
Mary Barr, the fifth of thirteen children, married at the age of sixteen. She and her first husband, John Harsh, had two children, each of whom lived only one day. John died after four years of marriage, leaving Mary a widow aged nineteen or twenty. Two years later she married Oliver Watson. Together they had twelve children, only six of whom lived to adulthood.
The 1830 Census reported the Oliver Watson family at Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, consisting of a man and a woman in their 20s and two girls uder 5.[8] This agrees with the information we have on the family from other sources: Oliver, 28, Mary, 27, Anna, 3, and Mary, 1.
The 1840 Census also reported the family in Lampeter Township. It listed age and sex categories as follows, with the possible identifications:[9]
age/sex category | possible identity |
male 30-39 | Oliver, 37 |
female 30-39 | Mary, 36 |
male 15-19 | unidentified |
male 5-9 | Jacob, 9 |
female 5-9 | Susan, 6 |
female 0-4 | Fances, 4 |
female 0-4 | Mary, 2 |
female 0-4 | Martha, 5 months |
The unidentified teenage male could have been a farm hand. Daughter Anna, 13, could have been working out or staying with another relative. George had died at three months, the first Mary at three years, John at five years, Elam at eleven months.
The 1850 Census reported the family at Bart Township as follows:[10]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
26. | Oliver Watson | 53 | M | farmer | PA
27. | Mary Watson | 46 | F | PA | |||
28. | Jacob Watson | 19 | M | laborer | PA | school
29. | Susan Watson | 16 | F | PA | school
30. | Francis Watson | 14 | F | PA | school
31. | Mary Watson | 12 | F | PA | school
32. | Margaret Watson | 8 | F | PA | school
33. | James Morican | 12 | M | PA |
Eldest daughter Anna had married in 1836. The Oliver Watson family was listed in the census immediately after the George Howett family. This is significant, as Jacob Watson would marry Hannah Howett later in that census year, and Frances Watson would marry Skipwith Howett three years later. A brother and sister married a sister and brother. Emanuel had been born and died in 1844. Martha was not reported, as she died on the census day, 1 June 1850.
In the following decade most of the family dispersed. Jacob married in 1850, and had moved to Illinois by 1858; Frances married in 1853, Susan in 1854. The much smaller family was reported in Eden Township (Quarryville Post Office) in 1860.[11] They may not have moved, as Eden Township had been formed out of Bart Township in 1855.
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace |
11. | Oliver Watson | 57 | M | lime burner | PA
12. | Mary Watson | 56 | F | housewife | $450 | PA
13. | Mary Watson | 23 | F | seamstress | PA
14. | Margaret Watson | 18 | F | common school teacher | PA |
Margaret married in December of that census year. Oliver Watson died by drowning at McCall's Ferry in 1865.[12]
The 1880 Census reported Mary Watson, 76, keeping house, at Eden Township, with her daughter, Mary Watson, 44, at home, and two granddaughters, Anna M. Watson, 14, and Mary Elizabeth Watson, 10.[13] I cannot identify the granddaughters. Mary died in 1882.
Mary Barr and her first husband John Harsh had the following children:[14]
