According to the Herr Genealogy, Skipwith Howett was the son of George Howett and Hannah Brown.[1] According to the 1850 Census, George Howett, with wife Hannah, living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was sixty-two years old, or born about 1787-8.[2] The only Howett in the 1790 and 1800 censuses in Pennsylvania or Maryland with a male child that could be this George Howett, was James Howith, of East Whiteland, Chester County, in 1790, and James Howet of Little Britain, Lancaster County, in 1800,[3] presumably the same person. The Biographical Annals of Lancaster County provides information on an H. G. Howett, born 1841, whose father and grandfather were both named Amos.[4] The older Amos would be old enough to be Skipwith's father, but Annals provides a list of his surviving children, and it did not include a Skipwith. It did include a James. However it is unlikely that this was the James of the census records, who would have been born before 1755. As most of the information on both Howett families points to the southern extremities of Lancaster County, or to Cecil County, Maryland, there is probably a connection somewhere between these families.
Howett is a name of English or Irish origin. The 1850 Census, the first to list every free person by name, reported 133 persons with the surname Howett. Twenty of them lived in Lancaster County.
GEORGEa HOWETT was born at Pennsylvania about 1787-8. He died probably after 1860 and before 1870. He married HANNAH BROWN. She was born at Maryland about 1789-90, and died probably after 1860 and before 1870.[5]
The George Howett family was reported at Cecil County in the 1820 Census, in Lancaster County (no township indicated) in 1840, in Bart Townahip, Lancaster County, in 1850. That census called George a laborer.[6]
George and Hannah Howett had at least five children, probably more. Of the five listed below, Skipwith and Hannah are listed as children of this couple in the Herr Genealogy; George was reported living with Rebecca in the 1870 Census; John was reported near George in the 1840 Census, and William was reported near George in the 1850 Census. So we should say that most of them were probably or possible children of this couple.
George Howett appeared in the 1820 and 1840 censuses, which only indicated the numbers of persons in a family in age and sex categories. There is no guarantee that all the persons in a household were related, or that all of their children were in the household; however it does give us some clues. We can look at the numbers reported in those censuses, and match them with these posslible family members, as follows:[7]
|
|
All of these figures are approximate, and there are many uncertainties in this matching. It could be that one of the unidentified boys under ten in 1820 was the second young man in his twenties in 1840, and William had left home. There's enough congruence in the data to suggest that the identification of these children is correct.
The 1850 Census reported this family in Bart Township, consisting of George Howett, 62, Hannah, 60 (born in Maryland) and another Hannah, 26.[8] The next household listed was that of Oliver and Mary Watson, whose daughter would marry Skipwith Howett. At that time John Howett, 37, lived in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, with his wife, Elizabeth, 33, and daughters Rebeckah, 7, and Margret, 3.[9] Skipwith Howett, 34, worked as a carter and lived in the household of Henry and Susan Brenaman in Bart Township.[10] William Howett, 28, lived in Bart township with Agnes, 37, and Mary, 2.[11] Rebecca had married and was living in Colerain Township, Lancaster County.[12] Who was James Howett, age 19, living with Martin and Rebecca (Howett) Eckman?
In 1860 George Howett, 73, was living with Martin and Rebecca (Howett) Eckman in Colerain Township.[13] Hannah Howett, age 70, born in Maryland, was living with her son Skipwith Howett and his family at Strasburg Township, Lancaster County.[14] The absence of George Howett and Hannah Howett from the 1870 Census records suggest that they both may have died between 1860 and 1870.
George Howett and his wife Hannah Brown probably had the following children, and possibly others.:
SKIPWITHb HOWETT (Georgea) was born at Cecil County on 7 November 1815 a son of George Howett and his wife Hannah Brown . He died on 1 October 1892.[21] He married at Bart Township on 20 October 1853 FRANCES H. WATSON.[22] She was born at Lancaster County on 7 November 1835, a daughter of Oliver Watson and his wife Mary Barr. She died on 11 October 1883.[23]
Skipwith Howett grew up, in his earliest years, in Cecil County. At some point in his childhood the family moverd to Lancaster County. Frances Watson, the seventh of twelve children, grew up in her earliest years on a farm in Lampeter Township, Lancaster County. At some point in her childhood they moved to a farm in Bart Township, probably in the eastern part of that township, which in 1855 became Eden Township. The 1850 Census reported the Howett and Watson families next to each other.
Skipwith Howett and Frances Watson were married in a German Reformed service by Rev. W. Goodrich of New Providence, Providence Township, Lancaster County.[24] Skipwith was thirty-seven years old, his bride was seventeen. Three years before they married, Skipwith's sister, Hannah, age 27, married Frances' brother, Jacob, age 19.
Skipwith Howett was reported in the 1850 Census living in the household of Henry and Susan Brenneman in Bart township. Skipwith, 34, was a carter.[25] As a married couple they remained in Bart/Eden Township at least until the birth of their second child, in 1859. The 1860 Census reported them in Strasburg Township as follows:[26]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birthplace |
12. | Skipwith Howett | 45 | M | farm tenant | $ 700 | MD | |

According to the death record of their third child, Laura, they were living in Bart Township again in 1869. However the 1870 Census reported them in Drumore Township, Lancaster County. The family consisted of Skipwith, 55, farmer; Frances, 35; Hannah, 15, Amos, 13, and Anna, six months.[27] The 1880 Census reported the family of the same composition in the same place, only ten years older.[28] Frances died in 1883, at the age of forty-seven. Skipwith died in 1892, at the age of seventy-six.
Skipwith Howett and his wife Mary Watson had the following children:
AMOS WATSONc HOWETT (Skipwithb, Georgea) was born at Eden Township on 3 August 1859 a son of Skipwith Howett and his wife Frances Watson . He died at Fountain Hills, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, on 1 Devember 1945.[39] He married at Bart Towhship on 18 March 1880 CLARA MAY JOHNSON.[40] She was born at Quarryville, Lancaster County, on 20 July 1862, a daughter of Stephen J. Johnson and his wife Mary Catharine Brown. She died at Lancaster on 10 October 1938.[41]
Amos Howett grew up on farms in Strasburg and Drumore Townships. Clara Johnson grew up on farms in Drumore and Providence Townships. They married at the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church parsonage. At the time they were both residents of Quarryville. Amos was twenty years old, Clara seventeen. In the next twenty-two years they had ten children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. They lived most of their married lives at 536 Mary Street, Lancaster. Amos at first was a carpenter, but soon secured a position at a plaining mill.
The 1900 Census reported the almost complete family as follows:[42]

Two of the children, Cora, 19, and Charles, 11, were living with Clara's parents in Providence Township.[43] The boarder, Charles Killian, would marry Florence in three years. According to this record, Clara had nine children, eight of whom were living. She may have had another child, who died. The largest interval between known births of children is between July 1895 and August 1899.
The family was soon changing. The last child, Amos, was born in 1902. The following year Cora and Florence married. In 1907 Ella married.
The 1910 Censu reported the remainder of the family still at 536 Mary Street:[44]

Of the married children:
Mabel and Charles both married in the following decade. The 1920 Census reported this family at several households:
The 1930 Census reported the family further dispersed:
Clara Johnson Howett died in 1938 from carcinoma of the rectum with intestinal obstruction.[64] The 1940 Census found Amos, age 83, living with his son Amos and daughter-in-law Thelma in Bethlehem, Northampton County.[65] Amos (senior) died in 1945 from a cerebral hemorrhage.[66]
Obituaries in Lancaster papers fill in more of the details of the lives of some of the children of Amos and Clara:[67]

The death of the granddaughter of Amos and Clara, Florence Gladys (Killian) Emmerich, and her husband, in a traffic accident, was also reported in the Lancaster papers:[68]
A Lancaster man and his wife were killed Wednesday when a truck-trailer rig crossed into their lane of traffic and hit their car headon about a mile west of Thompsontown in Juniata County. Pronounced dead at the Lewistown Hospital were Philip J. Emmerich, 59, and his wife F. Gladys Emmerich, 60. They resided at 544 W. Orange St. Dr. Stephen Dodd, coroner, said Mrs. Emmerich died instantly from a crushed chest and a fractured neck He said she also had additional fractures. Emmerich, he said, died while undergoing surgery for severe internal injuries. He said Emmerich was considered in extreme critical condition when he was admitted. Bill Andrew McMahon, 36, of 12621 Cooley Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, was driving the rig west on Route 22 when a car ahead of him stopped to make a turn, Lewistown state police said. McMahon's truck swerved into the other lane to avoid hitting the turning car and collided with the Emmerich's car. The accident occurred at 12:50 p.m., the police reported, on rain-slick roads. McMahon suffered only minor cuts, the police said, not requiring hospital attention. Police said they did not yetr know if he would be charged. The Emmerichs were believed returning to Lancaster after spending the holidays at their bungalow near Belleville, Mifflin County. Emmerich was born in Lancaster, a son of the late Philip M. and Minnie Bomberger Emmerich. He was employed by the Prudential Insurance Co. of America for over 35 years and was the second oldest agent for the company in Lancaster County. He was a member of the Coast guard Auxiliary. Survivors include these brothers and sisters: George, Conestoga R1; Leroy, Lancaster; Walter, Willow Street; James, Lancaster; and Ethel, wife of Glenn Mellott, Willow Street Mrs. Emmerich was also born in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Charles S. and Florence Howett Killian. She is survived by a brother, Charles T., Miami, Fla.; and a sister, Vera Mae, wife of Willis Witmer, Detroit. The following children also survive: Faith, wife of Donald Archer, Lititz; Hope, wife of Donald A. Bachman, Strasburg; Louise, wife of Jack Cannan, Lancaster; Carol, wife of Timothy Moore, Lancaster, and Mrs. Phyllis Oswald, at home; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. |
