Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

JOHN W.2 LEZENBY (Cornelius1) was born at Manchester, England, on May, 1842,[1] a son of Cornelius Lezenby and his wife Eliza Wilson . He died at Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, on 2 October 1911.[2] He married on 20 July 1865 HANNAH FOX.[3] a daughter of Joseph and Jane (Brown) Fox. She was born at New Jersey on August 1844[4] and died at Camden on 14 March 1917.[5]

John Lazenby spent his infancy in the textile mill city of Manchester. At about the age of four he moved with his family to America, where they settled in Norristown, Pennsylvania. When he was about ten, his family moved to Camden, where they remained.

When John Lezenby was eighteen he became a soldier, and fought in the Civil War. He first enlisted for 90 days on 24 April 1861, in Company C, 4th Regiment of New Jersey Infantry. His unit marched to Washington, D.C., but saw no action. He was discharged at Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, on 31 July 1861.

John Lezenby re-enlisted on 13 August 1862, as a 1st Sergeant in Company C, 12th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry. This time he saw a lot of action. Because we know what regiment he was in, and where that regiment fought, we can identify with all probability where and when he saw action:

John Lezenby came home to New Jersey, and married at the age of twenty-three. John and Hannah Lezenby and family lived at Camden, where John was reported a blacksmith in 1870. By 1880 they had moved to Chambersburg, Mercer County, where John worked as a machinist. They later returned to Camden, where John was reported as a blacksmith in 1900 and a shipyard blacksmith in 1910.

John and Hannah had at least seven children, only three of whom reached adulthood. The 1870 census reported John and Hannah at Camden with daughter Lillie, 2, and brother Alexander, also a blacksmith.[7] Lillie was their second child; their first, Jennie, died in infancy. Lillie's twin, Willie, had also died.

The 1880 census reported the completed family at Chambersburg, consisting of John W., 39, Ann (Hannah), 36, Lily, 13, Ellen, 7, and George, 5.[8] Another child, John, was born in 1870 after the census date of 1 June and died in 1871. John and Hannah would have yet one more child, being born and dying in 1880 after the 1 June census. John Lezenby applied for a Veteran's Pension on 17 March 1892, claiming to be an invalid.[9]

By 1900 all the children had married and left home, but son George had returned with his two children after his wife had left him.[10] The 1910 census reported John, 67, and his wife Hannah, 65, by themselves at 727 Berkley Street, Camden.[11] Hannah (Fox) Lezenby applied for a widow's pension on 7 October 1911,[12] five days after John's death. She died in 1917.

Lillian Lezenby evidently had an early and brief marriage to George Washington Rodgers. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on 19 April 1887,[13]

The celebrated Rodgers desertion and divorce case has been brought to a close. Yesterday Mrs. Lillian Rodgers, nee Lezenby, received word that the Court of Chancery had granted her an absolute divorce from her husband, George Washington Rodgers.

I don't know why the case was "celebrated." Lillian was nineteen at the time of the divorce. Two months later she married Rufus Bright, a marriage that would last sixty-one years. Rufus worked as a brakeman for the railroad in 1900, when they resided with his father. Then he worked as a conductor for the steam railroad. They had four children, three of whom lived to adulthood. They lived at Camden, and in later years, by the 1930 Census, at Pennsauken, Camden County.[14]

Ellen Lezenby married William Garwood when she was seventeen and he twenty-one. In 1900 they resided at Manhattan, New York City, where William worked as a barber.[15] They divorced sometime after that census and before William's second marriage, about 1904-5. In 1910 Ellen "Nellie" Garwood lived in Philadelphia, with a lodger, Edna B. Long.[16] The 1920 and 1930 censuses reported her at Camden, living alone. With no reported occupation in 1910 and 1920, she was described in 1930 as an advertisement solicitor.[17] Her ex-husband lived in Camden, out of work in 1910, bartender in 1920, watchman for the Elks Club in 1930.[18]

John W. Lezenby and his wife Hannah Fox had the following children:

Ancestry of Hannah (Fox) Lezenby

Information at findagrave.com provided by Dave Barnett, supplemented by census records, provides us with information on Hannah Fox’s parents and maternal grandparents:

JOSEPH D. FOX was born at New Jersey on 17 September 1805, and died at Camden on 17 August 1876.[60] He married JANE BROWN, the daughter of JOHN BROWN and his wife ELIZABETH SIMS. Jane was born at New Jersey on 7 May 1805 and died at Camden on 20 December 1885.[61]

When Joseph Fox enlisted in the army at the age of 22, he was described as having blue eyes, black hair, a dark complexion, and height of 5' 6 ½". He was a miller from Gloucester, Camden County, New Jersey. Joseph enlisted at Philadelphia on February 28, 1828, for five years and served in the 4th artillery regiment, company D. He was discharged on 1 July 1828 with a certificate of disability.[62]

The 1850 and 1860 censuses reported the family of Joseph D. Fox at Camden, where he was a laborer. In 1870 Joseph and Hannah resided with their son Joseph B. Fox at Camden, and both Josephs, father and son, worked as milk dealers. Widow Hannah Fox still resided with her son Joseph in 1880.

The 1850 census reported the family at Camden as follows:[63]

Name Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
Joseph Fox 45 M laborer NJ
Jane Fox 44 F NJ
Jeanetta Fox 19 F NJ
Anna Fox 18 F NJ
Elizabeth Fox 17 F NJ
Joseph Fox 13 M NJ
Mary J. Fox 9 F NJ
John Fox 8 M NJ
Hannah Fox 6 F NJ

In 1860 only three of the children were still at home: Elizabeth, 25, a book folder, Mary J., 20, tailoress, and Hannah, 15, who worked in a store.[64]

The 1870 census reported Joseph and Jane with their son, Joseph, 31, his wife Rachel, 28, and their four children, ages seven years to four months. Mary Jane, 28, tailoress, was still in the household.[65]

In 1880 the household of the younger Joseph Fox consisted of ten persons, representing four generations. Besides Joseph, 43, his wife Rachel, 40, and their two smaller children Rena, 9, and Edgar, 3, the family included Joseph’s mother, Jane, 76, and his sister, Mary Jane, 40, tailoress, listed as divorced. The family had also been enlarged by the marriage of Joseph’s daughter, Ida, 16, within the year, to J. Frank Paul, 21, shoe factory worker, and their baby, Anna, born in February, and suffering dysentery. A seventeen year old servant, Louisa Powell, completed the household.[66]

Joseph D. Fox and his wife Jane Brown had the following children:

  1. JEANETTE FOX b. at New Jersey about 1830-1.[67]
  2. ANNA FOX b. at New Jersey on 1832;[68] d. at Trenton on 9 September 1898; m. at Gloucester on 27 September 1852 REUBEN MATLACK[69] b. at New Jersey on 8 February 1831; d. at Trenton on 23 May 1897.[70]

  7. HANNAH FOX b. at New Jersey on August 1844; m. JOHN W. LEZENBY. (See above)

He was married to ELIZABETH SIMS (15 January 1768-13 February 1807).[79]
