Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

GEORGE CREASE3 LEZENBY (John2, Cornelius1) was born at New Jersey on 9 December 1875[1] a son of John W. Lezenby and his wife Hannah Fox. He died at New Jersey on 11 December 1958.[2] He married first at Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, on 15 November 1892 LULA AMES WOODRUFF.[3] In some records she is called "Lula," in other records "Lulu." She was born at Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey, on 15 April 1877, a daughter of Samuel Barker Woodruff and his wife Martha Hattie Reeves. She died at Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey, on 25 February 1953.[4] George Lezenby married second at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 1901 PAULINE K. BINDER.[5] She was born at Pennsylvania about September 1873,[6] and died at Vineland, Cumberland County, on 6 October 1963.[7] Lulu (Woodruff) Lezenby married second at Philadelphia on 1915 HARVEY GILDAY.[8] He was born at Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on 9 February 1872, and died at Northfield, Atlantic County, on 24 February 1949.[9]

George C. Lezenby, the sixth of seven children, grew up in Camden, where his father worked as a blacksmith. Lulu, the ninth of ten children, was eight years old when her father died. I have not been able to trace her and her mother's whereabouts immediateley after his death.

When they married, George was 16, Lulu was 15. She became a mother at 17, and had her second child at 20. Within three years of his birth, the marriage was over. George and Lulu had separated by the time of the 1900 Census, and divorced before George's second marriage the following year.

The 1900 census reported George Lezenby, 24, and his sons George, 5, and J. Wallace, 2, living with George's parents in Camden.[10] George Lezenby married Pauline Bender in 1901; the issuance of their marriage license was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer on 16 August.[11] Pauline Binder was 26 when she married 25 year old George Lezenby. She may have been the daughter of Conrad and Katie Binder, German immigrants who settled in Philadelphia. If this identification is correct, Pauline was working as a cotton winder in 1900.[12]

George’s draft registration in 1918 described him as medium height, medium build, with brown eyes and brown hair.[13]

George began his work life as a barber. This was how he was listed in the 1900, 1905, 1910 and 1915 censuses and his 1918 draft registration. However by 1920 he called himself a doctor of “electrotheroputics,” and afterwards a doctor of electrical treatments.[14] By 1920 the sons had left home, and George and Pauline had moved to 582 Benson Street, Camden, where they remained.[15] George died in 1958, Pauline in 1963; they are buried at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, Camden County.[16]

Lulu was reported in 1910 at 2310 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City, where she worked at home as a dressmaker; she also had two boarders, William McConnel, a saloon keeper, and John Sinnit, a driver for a brewery.[17]

In 1915, at the age of 38, Lulu married 43 year old Harvey V. Gilday. Harvey grew up in Dauphin County, with his parents, Thomas Jefferson Gilday and Elizabeth Rachel Bagner, and his brother William. His father, Thomas, is variously described as a stationary engineer and a farmer. He was a Civil War veteran, described as disabled in the 1880 census.[18] From 1899 to 1901 Thomas resided at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Hampton, Virginia.[19] In the 1900 Census, William and Harvey, carpenters, ages 30 and 28, were living in Philadelphia with their mother.[20] Elizabeth died in 1902,[21] Thomas in 1908.[22] The 1910 Census found William and Harvey, ages 40 and 38, woodworkers, living together in Philadelphia.[23 ] Harvey married at the age of 43. At the age of 50, William married Pearl M. Fox.[24]

Harvey and Lulu (Woodruff) (Lezenby) Gilday lived in Atlantic City. City directories described Harvey as a carpenter in 1920, a seller of novelties in 1922, and a seller of sewing machines in 1923 and 1924. From 1925 through 1929 their occupation (perhaps Lulu's) was listed as hemstitcher.[25]

The two sons of George and Lula moved around a bit, but maintained contact with both parents. In 1900 George and his two sons were living with his parents. In 1905 George, Junior, was with his father,[26] John Wallace with his grandparents.[27] In 1910 both sons were with George and Pauline.[28] Wallace was still there in 1915,[29] but with his uncle Joseph Woodruff in 1920.[30]

Harvey Gilday died in 1949, Lulu in 1953. Her death record follows. You will note that the informant was her son George Lezenby.
