Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

GEORGE CREASE4 LEZENBY, Jr. (George3, John2, Cornelius1) was born at Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, on 6 June 1894[1] a son of George Crease Lezenby, Sr., and his first wife Lula Woodruff . He died on 12 May 1984, his last address was Elwood, Atlantic County, New Jersey.[2] He married on 1915 ANNA J. ROSKA.[3] She was born at Pennsylvania on 29 September 1885 and died on 24 January 1972, her last address was Wernersville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.[4] He married second, at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, on 15 September 1942, AMANDA (HEAL) SINEX She was born at Wilmington on 18 March 1888, a child of Edward P. and Eliza Heal.[5] She died on 16 January 1975, her last address was at Margate City, Atlantic County.[6]. Amanda had first married, after receiving a license for marriage at Delaware on 24 December 1907, EDWARD JOSEPH SINEX,[7] who was born at New Castle County on 30 October 1884, a child of Lewis T. and Anna M. (O'Neally) Sinex.[8] He died in 1929.[9]

The eldest of two sons of George and Lula Lezenby, George grew up in Camden and Atlantic City. Before George reached the age of five, his parents had separated, and he was reported in the 1900 Census with his father and brother, living with his grandparents.[10] When George was seven his father married Pauline Binder, and George was raised by his father and step mother, with whom he was reported in the 1905 and 1910 censuses.[11] However he continued to have contact with his mother.

In 1915 George Crease Lezenby, Jr., married Anna J. Roska. They secured their marriage license in Phildelphia, and it was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer on 1 May of that year.[12]

George's draft registration, at Camden on 5 June, 1917, provides more information on him:[13]

In the above document George clearly stated his birthdate and place, his address in Camden, and that he was married with one child. It also indicated that he was a barber, working for his father.

George settled in Atlantic City and followed his father's career path, starting as a barber, then going into alternative medicine. Census records, city directories, and draft registrations piece together the following picture of George's life:

George and Anna appear to have been living apart. Mrs. Anna Lezenby was reported in 1927 at 6 North Maryland Avenue, and in 1929 and 1930 at 112 State Avenue.[27] They must have divorced at some point, as George remarried in 1942. As Anna later died at Wernersville, not far from where her son pastored a church, it is likely thst the children remained close to their mother.

I have not found George or Anna Lezenby in the 1930 or 1940 censuses.

Amanda (Heal) Sinex was born at Wilmington, and married Edward Joseph Sinex there in 1907. Their daughter, Eleanor, was born at Oregon about 1913-4. Edward died in 1929. Amanda and her daughter appeared in the 1930 Census at Atlantic City, where Amanda, 42, was a dressmaker, and Eleanor, 16, worked as a sales lady at a department store.[28]

George and Amanda married at Wilmington in 1942. The 1946 Atlantic City Directory reported them at 2501 Pacific Avenue, apartment 14. However, beginning in 1950 George and Amanda were reported at different addresses. George was at 9 North Morris Avenue in 1950, and at 2827 Atlantic Avenue in 1954.[29] Amanda was reported as follows:

George's first wife, Anna, died in 1972; her last address was Wernersville. His second wife, Amanda, died in 1974; her last address was Margate City, Atlantic County. He died in 1984; his last address was Elwood, Atlantic County.

Robert M. Lezenby, son of George and Anna, became a Lutheran minister. His career is summarized briefly in his obituary:[34]

LEZENBY, SR., The Rev. Robert M. died at his residence on February 19, 2010. He was born in Camden, New Jersey, April 8th 1916. He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Dorothy, and son, Robert, Jr. Preceding him in death were his parents, George C. and Anna Lezenby and sister, Edna Matz. Robert was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medic and ward master in the Philippine Islands. As a Lutheran pastor, he served churches in Shoemakersville, Hershey, and Arendtsville, all in Pennsylvania, and Franklin and Covington in Ohio. Robert was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield, OH. Following his wishes, his body will be cremated and there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Choir Music Fund in care of Robert M Lezenby Jr. . . . The family wishes to thank the Wellington Nursing Home for all their excellent care. . . .
