JOHND LAZENBY (RichardC, DorothyB, WilliamA) was baptized at Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Blackburn, Lancashire, England, on 3 April 1816, a son of Richard Lazenby and his wife Jane Seed.[1] He died possibly at Blackburn on October-December 1881.[2] He married at Saint Mary church, Blackburn,on 30 October 1844 MARY JANE WILSON.[3] She was born at Preston, Lancashire, about 1820-1, a daughter of William Wilson.[4] She died sometime after the 1881 Census.
Mary Jane's birthplace, Preston, was another community impacted by the Industrial Revolution, about 10 miles west of Blackburn. The 1851 and 1881 cesnsuses record John's birthplace as Balderstone, a small village about 5 miles northwest of Blackburn.
John Lazenby worked as a blacksmith, like his father. In 1851, John, Mary Ann, and their first two children were living with John's parents at Blackburn. Louisa died in 1853.[5]
The 1861 Census reported the family at 13 Jackson Street, Blackburn, as follows:[6]
Name | relationship | marital status | Sex | Age | occupation | birthplace |
John Lezenby | head | married | male | 42 | blacksmith | Lanc. Blackburn |
Mary Lezenby | wife | married | female | 38 | blacksmith | Lanc. Blackburn |
Nancy Lezenby | daughter | unmarried | female | 11 | scholar | Lanc. Blackburn |
John Lezenby | son | unmarried | male | 7 | scholar | Lanc. Blackburn |
Jane Lezenby | daughter | unmarried | female | 4 | scholar | Lanc. Blackburn |
James Lezenby | son | unmarried | male | 6 mos. | child | Lanc. Blackburn |
I have not found John Lazenby in the 1871 Census. Mary Jane Lazenby was reported at 4 Adelaide Street, Blackburn, with her four children. Mary Jane Lazenby, married, born Preston, housekeeper, was reported as 46 years of age. The chidren, all unmarried and born at Blackburn, were:
- Nancy, 20, cotton weaver
- John R., 16, apprenticed house painter
- Jane, 14, cotton weaver
- James, 11, scholar.[7]
The 1881 Census reported Mary Jane Lazenby living at a different location in Blackburn, with her two yougest children and a boarder. Mary Jane was described as married, age 63, a cotton weaver, born at Preston. Her two children at home, both unmarried and born at Blackburn, were: Jane, 22, cotton weaver, and James, 20, butcher. Their lodger was also a young butcher.[8] John Lazenby, age 67, blacksmith, born Balderstone, was living in Blackburn with his widowed sister, Jane Cook.[9] Son John, now calling himself John Richard Lazenby, still unmarried, age 27, born Blackburn, painter, was living at another location in Blackburn.[10] I have no further information on Daughter Nancy.
The 1881 Census was taken on 3 April. The John Lazenby who died at Blackburn in the last quarter of that year is possibly the person described on this page, in spite of the difference in age.[11] Nevertheless, I have found no further record of this John Lazenby. I also have found no further record for Mary Ann Lazenby or their daughter Jane.
John Richard Lazenby probably married twice, as he had an eight year old daughter in the 1901 Census,[12] and he and wife Fanny reported having been married eleven years in the 1911 Census.[13] I have no information on this first wife. His second wife, Fanny, had been married to James Dagnall, and brought two children to her second marriage.
James Lazenby, born Blackburn, age 27, butcher, was living in 1891 with his wife Catherine, age 22, born Worcester. He was described as a "visitor" in the home of Joseph and Ann Lawton, Walsall, Staffordshire. The large household included two other boarders who were butchers. Joseph Lawton and two of his sons were carters. Another boarder was a leather currier.[14] I have no further record on James Lazenby.
John Lazenby and his wife Mary Jane Wilson had the following children:
