RICHARDC LAZENBY (DorothyB, WilliamA) was born at Hunton, Yorkshire, England, on 21 June 1784, and baptized at Patrick Brampton, Yorkshire, on 9 July 1784,[1] a son of Dorothy Lazenby and John Mudd. He was buried at Blackburn, Lincolnshire, on 9 November 1865.[2] He married at Blackburn on 17 February 1812 JANE SEED.[3] She was probably baptized at Samlesbury, Lancashire, on 24 December 1781, daughter of Ruth Seed and Jane Walmsley.[4] She was buried at Blackburn on 9 November 1865.[5]
Blackburn became a major textile center in the early part of the Industrial Revolution. This branch of the Lazenby family settled in Blackburn. Sometimes a person is described as from Blackburn in one record, and from one of the smaller towns around Blackburn in another record. Balderstone is a small village about 5 miles northwest of Blackburn. Darwen, today part of the same municipality as Blackburn, was 5 miles south. Samlesbury was 6 miles west of Blackburn.
As a young man, Richard Lazenby moved from his small rural village to join the Industrial Revolution at Blackburn. He practiced the trade of blacksmith. Here he married, here his children were born, and here he was reported in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. The 1841 census reported this household as follows:[6]
Name | Sex | Age |
Richard Lazenby | M | 50 |
Jane Lazenby | F | 55 |
John Lazenby | M | 20 |
Jane Lazenby | F | 20 |
James Lazenby | M | 15 |
Margaret Lazenby | F | 4 |
Nancy Lazenby | F | 4 |
James Cook | M | 20 |
Richard, Jane and John were listed as blacksmiths, James Cook as a weaver. When a census record lists all of the adults with an age divisible by five, I think we can assume the census taker was making rough estimates. Daughter Jane would marry James Cook in five years. What is the identity of the two smaller children, Margaret and Nancy? A Margaret Lazenby was baptized at Saint Mary-the-Virgin church at Blackburn on 11 October 1837; no father was indicated, her mother's name was Jane Lazenby.[7] So the Margaret in the census record is probably the granddaughter of Richard and Jane, whom their daughter Jane bore out of wedlock. A Nancy Lazenby was baptized at the same parish on 2 July 1837, child of William and Susanna Lazenby.[8] Perhaps this is the William Lazenby residing at the time of the 1841 census at the New Bailey House of Correction, Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, age 25, blacksmith. If Richard and Jane were raising their child, there was probably a relationship somewhere.
The 1851 Census reported this family at 1 Grayson Lane, Blackburn, as follows:[9]
Name | relationship | marital status | Age | Sex | occupation | birthplace |
Richard Lazenby | head | M | 68 | M | blacksmith | Hunton, Yorks. |
Jane Lazenby | wife | M | 70 | F | Balderstone, Lancs.
John Lazenby | son | M | 33 | M | blacksmith | Balderstone, Lancs. |
Mary Jane Lazenby | daughter-in-law | M | 30 | F | Preston, Lancs.
Louisa Lazenby | granddaughter | U | 3 | F | Blackburn, Lancs.
Nancy Lazenby | granddaughter | U | 7 mos. | F | Blackburn, Lancs. |
The 1861 Census reported Richard Lazenby, widower, 72, blacksmith, born Hunton, residing in Blackburn with the family of John Fawcett, cordwainer, 49, and his wife Sarah, 48, and their four children.[10]
Richard and Jane Lazenby had eight children of record. Concening two, Faith and Dolly, I have found no record beyond their baptisms. Richard died at the age of eighteen. Cornelius went to America with his wife and young family. The other four children all married and had children, and remained in England. James, reported in the 1851 census with a wife and two daughters,[11] apparently died soon after, as did one of his daughters. His widow, Eliza, was reported in the 1871 census as a domestic servant in the home of William and Mary Ainsworth of Blackburn.[12] I have found no further record of the other daughter.
Richard Lazenby and his wife Jane Seed had the following children, all baptized at Saint-Mary-the-Virgin Parish, Blackburn:[8]
