Cornelius Lezenby and Eliza Wilson, Immigrants
and some of their Ancestors
and Descendants

THOMASD LAZENBY (RichardC, DorothyB, WilliamA) was baptized at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Blackburn, Lancashire, England, on 12 July 1820, a son of Richard Lazenby and his wife Jane Seed.[1] He was living in 1871, and is perhaps the Thomas Lazenby who died at Blackburn January-March 1876.[2] He married at Saint Mary Church, Blackburm, on 20 October 1839 MARY BROUGHTON.[3] She was born at Blackburn on 27 July 1818, and baptized at Saint Paul's Church, Blackburn, on 14 April 1819, a daughter of William and Jenny Broughton.[4] She was living in 1871.

Thomas Lazenby's birthplace is reported as Blackburn, or as Balderstone, a small town near Blackburn. He grew up in Blackburn, and like his father, was a blacksmith.

Thomas and Mary Broughton, and their four-month-old son Isaac, were reported in the 1841 census living with Mary's parents, Willian and Jane Broughton, along with six of Mary's younger siblings. William Broughton was a gardener.[5]

The Thomas Lazenby family must have moved several times in their early years of marriage. Son Isaac was born at Burnley, Lancashire, about 12 miles east of Blackburn, in January or February of 1841. By the time of the census, in June of 1841, they were in Blackburn. Daughter Dorothy was born about 1843-4 at Bury, a town about 19 miles south of Blackburn, closer to Manchester. All of these places were cotton textile manufacturing centers. The 1851 census reported Mary Lazenby and her two children lodged in a home in Blackburn; I have not found Thomas in that census. In 1861 Thomas, Mary and Dorothy had their own home in Blackburn; By 1871 Thomas and Mary were an "empty nest" couple in Blackburn.

Everyone worked in this Lazenby family. The 1851 Census reported Mary Lazenby, 32, a power loom cotton weaver; Isaac, 11, apprenticed to an iron foundry; and Dorothy, 7, a nurse.[6] In 1861, Thomas Lesenby worked as a blacksmith, Mary and Dorothy as cotton weavers.[7]

I have not found son Isaac in either the 1861 or 1871 census. The 1881 Census reported Isaac Lazenby, 40, blacksmith, and Jane Lazenby, 32 cotton weaver, lodging with John and Bridget Crosby in Blackburn.[8] The 1891 Census described Isaac Lazenby, 45, in his own home in Blackburn, as a widower and a "stockbroker."[9] The 1901 Census found Thomas Lazenby an inmate at the Blackburn Union Workhouse, where his occupation was reported as a journeyman blacksmith, and he was described as a lunatic.[10]

The 1881 Census raises some questions as yet unanswered. Henry Beardwood, 37, cotton mill overlooker (=overseer), lived at 52 Clifton Street, Blackburn, with his wife, Dorothy (Lazenby) Beardwood, 37, their daughter, Mary Ann Beardwood, 14, cotton weaver, and a niece, Minnie Lazenby, 10, scholar, born in America.[11] If the word "niece" is taken precisely, Minnie would be a child of Dorothy's brother Isaac. I can find no record of an Isaac Lazenby or Minnie Lazenby in America or coming or going between England and America, in this period. If the term "niece" is taken roughly, the only relative of Dorothy known to have gone to America was her uncle Cornelius, and he did not have a daughter or granddaughter Minnie in this period. I cannot identify this Minnie Lazenby.

Dorothy Lazenby, born at Bury, grew up and lived her early married years at Blackburn. She and her family can be traced through census records as follows:

Thomas Lazenby and his wife Mary Broughton had the following children:

  1. ISAACE lAZENBY b. at Burnley about January-February 1841;[22] d. at Blackburn on July-September 1903;[23] m. before 1881 JANE ________, b. at Darwen, Lancashire, about 1848-9,[24] d. before 1891.
  2. DOROTHYE LAZENBY b. at Bury, Lancashire, about 1843-4;[25] d. at Preston on January-March 1926;[26] m. at St. Paul's Church, Blackburn on 28 September 1862 HENRY BEARDWOOD, b. at Withnell, Lancashire, about 1841-2,[27] d. at Preston on October-December 1909,[28] child of John Beardwood. Child of Dorothy and Henry Beardwood:
    1. Mary Ann Beardwood b. at Blackburn about 1866-7,[29] living 1911; m. at Preston on April-June 1889 Thomas Bruerton[30] b. at Blakesley, Northamptonshire, about 1859-69,[31] living 1911. Children of Mary Ann and Thomas Bruerton:
      1. Dorothy E. Bruerton b. at Preston about May-June 1890,[32] d. there January-March 1901.[33]
      2. Lydia Bruerton b. at Preston about 1895-6.[34]
