The Ancestors and Descendants of
Albert Martin (1855-1923)
First Three Generations

Some online genealogies carry this Martin ancestry two generations further back. However, as they lack documentation, and I have not found evidence, I will not include them, but will begin with Christian Martin (1730-1803). My major source of information is a cardfile at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS). Each card contains information on a nuclear family. The cards use both primary and secondary information, and indicate their sources.

CHRISTIAN1 MARTIN was born at Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 1730, and died there on 1803. He married MARY BARR, who was born at Pennsylvania about 1742, a daughter of Martin Barr and his wife Elizabeth Herr. She died at Lancaster County on 24 May 1828.[1]

The Christian Martin family lived in Strasburg Township. Mary (Barr) Martin wrote her will on 24 May 1828, it was proved on 7 February 1829, and the final disposition of her property was made by a deed dated 25 April 1829. That deed provides a complete outline of Mary's children, and the children of her deceased children and grandchildren as follows:[2]

JOHN3 MARTIN (John2, Christian1) was born at Martic Township, on 28 June 1798 a son of John Barr Martin and his wife Alice Kendig,[6] and died at Conestoga Township on 16 January 1877.[7] He married on 12 May 1818 HANAH FAGAN. She was born at West Lampeter Township on 1 December 1798, a daughter of George Fagan and his wife ________ Aument. She died at Lancaster County on 1885.[8]

This John and Hannah Martin family can be traced through census records. They resided in Conestoga Township, John was a miller. The first census to list each person by name, the 1850 Census, reported them as follows:[9]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other
38. John Martin, Esq. 51 M miller Martic Twp.
39. Hannah Martin 51 F W. Lampeter Twp.
40. John Martin, Jr. 22 M W. Lampeter Twp.
41. Ann Mehaffey 13 F W. Lampeter Twp. school
42. Philip W. Hoffman 1 M Manor Twp.

Ann Mehaffey was John Martin's niece, daughter of his late sister Martha (Martin) Mehaffey. I cannot identify Philip Hoffman. The 1850 Census does not indicate relationship, so this does not prove that John was the son of John and Hannah, although his age is appropriate. Could the younger John in this census be a nephew of the older John? The elder John's brother George Martin had a son John born in 1823, who appears elsewhere in the census. John's brother Henry had a son John who later married a Shirk. This John does not appear in his parents' household in the census, so he could be the John Martin in this census record. John's brother Samuel had a son John born about 1834-5. So at this point, the younger John could be the son of either John or Henry.

The 1840 Census reported the household of John Martin consisting of one male and one female aged 40-49, one female aged 10-14, and one female aged 0-4.[10] This is consistent with the information on this household in 1850, except for the gender of the older child (John in 1850).

This family was reported at Conestoga Township in 1860 as follows:[11]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
28. John Martin 61 M farmer, miller $2400 $200 PA
29. Hanna Martin 62 F PA
30. Ann Mahaffey 21 F PA
31. Philip Hoffman 11 M PA
32. William Chambers 17 M PA

Philip and William were both in school; I do not know their relationship.

The 1870 Census found them, in the same township, as follows:[12]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
26. Martin, John 71 M W miller $300 PA
27. Martin, Hannah 71 F W keeps house PA
28. Mehaffey, Annie 27 F W dress maker PA

This record calls for no further comment except to remark at Annie's miraculous ability to age at a slower rate than other mortals.

After John Martin's death in 1877, his widow Hannah moved to East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, to board with a family there. They were reported in 1880 as follows:[13]

Line Name Race Sex Age Related MS Occupation B FB MB
18. Aument, William W M 63 M laborer PA PA PA
19. Aument, Hannah W F 58 wife M keeping house PA PA PA
20. Martin, Hannah W F 83 boarder Wd retired lady PA PA PA
21. Martin, Ada W F 13 granddaughter S at home PA PA PA

The Auments could be relatives of Hannah through her mother, whose maiden name was Aument. Ada Martin is the daughter of Mary Gochenauer. If the intent of the census taker was that Hannah Martin was the grandmother of Ada Martin, then Hannah must have had a child. The John Martin, Jr., who appeared with her in the 1850 census is the most likely candidate.

John Martin and his wife Hannah Fagan may have had the following child:

  1. JOHN MARTIN, Jr. b. at Pennsylvania about 1827-8; perhaps the father of the children of MARY GOCHENAUER.
