MARY GOCHENAUER was born at Pennsylvania on 10 March 1836 a daughter of John Gochenauer and his wife Lydia Elliot, and died at West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 11 January 1916.[1] She never married. The probable father of her children was JOHN MARTIN, Jr. He was born at Pennsylvania about 1827-8, a son of John Martin and his wife Hannah Fagan.[2] He died sometime before 1887.
For an explanation of why I believe John Martin is the probable father of Mary Gochenauer's children, go to Who Was the father of Albert Martin (1855-1923?
Mary Gochenauer, single woman, had three children, all surnamed Martin. Census takers and other officials had difficulty comprehending this relationship; as a result their reporting is confused. However, from existing records a picture emerges of a young unmarried woman with children living first with her parents, then working out as a domestic servant in different homes, then later living with her children.
In the 1860 Census, Mary Gouchnauer was living with her parents in Providence Township, Lancaster County (Smithville Post Office). The family consisted of John Gouchnauer, 54. laborer, Lidia, 54, Mary, 24, Martha, 14, Alphred, 6, and Franklin, 2. John and Lidia are Mary's parents; Alphred [perhaps Albert] and Franklin are probably her children.[3] However Albert Martin, age 4, was also reported living with Henry and Keziah Eckman at Providence Township (New Providence Post Office).[4] Keziah was a sister of Mary Gochenauer. Henry Eckman was a second cousin of John Martin (b. 1827-8), they both being great grandchildren of Christian and Mary (Barr) Martin. John Martin (b. 1827-8) lived at Providence Township (New Providence Post Office), five census pages from Mary. John, 32, laborer, lived with his first cousin, Martin Lefevre, and his family. John and Martin were both grandchildren of John Barr and Alice (Kendig) Martin.
In 1870 Mary Gochnaur, 34, and her daughter Ada, 2, were living at Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, in the home of Jonathan and Fannie Stauffer. Mary was a domestic servant.[5] Albert Martin, 14, continued to live with Henry and Keziah Eckman, who had no children of their own.[6]
The 1880 Census reported a dispersed family. Mary Gochenaur, 42, single, servant, lived in the large household of Franklin and Mary Weaver, West Lampeter Township.[7] Albert Martin, 24, single, servant, in the household of Jacob and Barbara Heidelbach, of Pequea Township, Lancaster County, worked on the farm.[8] Ada Martin, 12, and her probable grandmother Hannah Martin, 83 were residing with William (63) and Hannah (58) Aument in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County.[9]
In 1900 Mary Gochenauer, 64, was living with her son Albert in Pequea Township.[10] Ada, who had married in 1887, was living at West Lampeter Township with her husband, Benjamin Herr, and their four children.[11]
In 1910, Mary Gochanauer, 74, was at West Lampeter Township, living with her daughter, Ida [Ada] (Martin) Herr, and son-in-law Benjamin Herr and their youngest child.[12] Albert Martin, 50, was boarding in a hotel in Lancaster, Lancaster County.[13]
Mary Gochenauer died in 1916. Her death certificate, below, confirms some of the details of her life:[14]
An obituary from an unidentified newspaper had been posted on the internet by Rodrick R. Reese; however it has since been taken down. The obituary reads:[15]
Mary's son Frank H. remains a mystery. I have found no reference to him beyond the 1860 Census and this obituary. A survey of census records, county directories, and Pennsylvania death records has turned up nothing that I can clearly identify with this person.
Concerning the probable father, John Martin, I have found nothing conclusive beyond the reports of the 1850 and 1860 censuses. If he was the father of Ada Martin, he would have still been alive when she was conceived in late 1866. Ada's marriage licenes in 1887 reported her father as deceased.
