IDA MARY6 MARTIN (Albert5, Mary Gochenauer4) was born at Pequea Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 7 January 1885 a daughter of Albert Martin and his wife Elizabeth Groff, and died at Mountville, Lancaster County, on 13 June 1957.[1] She married at York, York County, Pennsylvania, on 26 October 1904 CLEMENT A. REESE.[2] He was born at Lancaster Conty on 17 November 1881, a son of Martin K. and Catherine (Winters) Reese. He died at Mountville on 17 June 1957.[3]

Ida was four months old when her mother commoitted suicide. I don't have information regarding which households in which she was raised. The 1900 Census reported her at Pequea Township, age 15, with her father, Albert Martin, 44, day laborer, and her grandmother Mary Gochenauer, 64, house keeper.[4]

Ida Martin married Clement Reese at York, when she was 19 and he 22.

Two months later his wife, Jennifer, age 34, was struck by a car and died, leaving three small children. Their obituaries tell some of this story. Another article follows, describing the accident that caused Jennifer's death:

Martin J. Reese, 45, of 50 Harvest Road, was found dead Tuesday morning in southern York County near the Norman Wood Bridge.

Reese's death was ruled a suicide by hanging according to York County Coroner Kathryn Fourhman-Olewiler. She said the time of death was between 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday.

A hunter found Reese's body at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, said Cpl. David Larue of the York State Police. It was found in a wooded area 40 yards west of River Road in Lower Chanceford Township, Larue said, about a mile north of Route 372.

Mother of 3 dies after being hit while walking child to bus stop.[23]
by Roger Clinton

Three young children who lost their father in November, became orphans Monday when their mother was fatally injured when she was struck by a van along a narrow Martic township road.

The mother, Jennifer Reese, 34, Holtwood, was walking her daughter Casey Lee, eight, along Hilldale road to a school bus stop when she was struck by a vehicle in the predawn darkness, state police said.

Mrs. Reese died at 7 p.m. Monday at Lancaster General Hospital from multiple injuries, a hospital spokesman said.

The spokesman said Mrs. Reese had undergone several hours of emergency surgery. The spokesman said Dr. Harry Kintzi, a hospital deputy coroner, ordered an autopsy performed today to determine the exact cause of death.

Her daughter Casey, a student at Locust Grove Mennonite School, escaped injury, Trooper Jerry Oberdorf said. She ran to the Reese home at 614 Hilldale Road and called for help, neighbors said.

The accident occurred shortly before dawn when the van, traveling south, and a car, traveling north, passed each other exactly at the point where the mother and daughter were walking, the trooper said.

Trooper Oberdorf said the accident occurred about 6:40 a.m. "It was still dark," Oberdorf said. "It's a very narrow road, and she was on the road.

"The vehicles were coming at each other and had to stay in their lanes," he said. The van driver, "had nowhere to go and didn't see her until he hit her."

That driver, Clifford M. Verdegem, 32, of 779 Sickman Hill Road, Conestoga, was not at fault and will not face any charges, the trooper said.

Casey Reese told a neighbor, Cheri Groff, that she and her mother were walking around a "For Sale" sign posted on Hilldale Road near Tucquan Glen Road in Martic Township when the accident occurred.

"Casey said her mother didn't hear the van behind her. She tried to pull her off the road," said Mrs. Groff, a family friend. But then she saw the van's wheels go right by her feet."

The girl ran home and called a family friend, who called emergency medical workers. She also called there Groffs, who live nearby.

Mrs. Groff's husband, Steven, and a passing motorist, Robert J. Frenessen, of Conestoga, provided emergency medical care until LGH medics and Providence Township ambulance workers arrived.

Mrs. Reese worked in her home as a medican transcriptionist for Lancaster General Hospital, spokeswoman Laura Zangari said. Her husband, Martin J. Reese, died Nov. 30.

All three Reese children attend Locust Grove Mennonite School, Mrs. Groff said. However, only daughter Casey Lee was walking to the bus stop, where a Penn Manor School District bus would have taken her on the first leg of a trip to her school.

The family's eldest daughter, Sunny Kay, 12, had stayed at a friend's house overnight and was going to school from there, Mrs. Groff said. A son, Dylan, 9, was ill and did not leave for school.

Several members of ACTS Covenant Fellowship Church and family members arrived at the Reese house shortly after the accident to care for the children, Mrs. Groff said.

Groff said rs. Reese's mother and father, Ed and Cathy Smith, flew in from San Antonio, Texas, Monday night and that they were aware that their daughter had died.

Trooper Oberdorf is continuing his investigation.
