The Ancestors and Descendants of
Albert Martin (1855-1923)
Fifth Generation

ALBERT5 MARTIN (John4-3-2, Christian1) was born at Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 5 September 1855 a son of Mary Gochenauer, and died at Lancaster, Lancaster County, on 6 March 1923.[1] He married at Lancaster on 22 December 1881 ELIZABETH KREIDER (GROFF) LEHMAN.[2] She was born at Pennsylvania on 13 August 1855, a daughter of John Rush Groff and his wife Mary Kreider.[3] She died at Pequa Township, Lancaster County, on 21 May 1885.[4] She was the widow of CHRISTIAN M. LEHMAN.

Albert was born out of wedlock. The 1860 Census reported him at the age of four, living with Henry and Keziah Eckman at Providence Township (New Providence Post Office).[5] Keziah was his mother's sister; Henry Eckman was a second cousin to his probable father. Albert's mother was living with her parents in the same township; John Martin, his probable father, was living with his cousin, Martin Lefevre, in the same township.

Ten years later, in 1870, ther census reported Albert still with his aunt, same township and post office, as follows:[6]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
10. Eckman, Henry 43 M W farm laborer $800 $200 PA
11. Eckman, Keziah 41 F W keeping house PA
12. Martin, Albert 14 M W PA
13. Zittle, William 3 M W PA
14. Gochenauer, Elizabeth 26 F W domestic servant PA

This record also reported that Albert was attending school. Elizabeth was a sister to Keziah, another aunt to Albert. I don't know if William Zittle was a relation.

The 1880 Census reported Albert Martin, 24, single, at Pequea Township, in the household of Jacob and Barbara Heidelbach, where he was a servant, working on the farm.[7]

Albert Martin married Elizabeth K. (Groff) Lehman in 1881; they were both twenty-six years old. This tragic marriage lasted only three and a half years, but produced three children. Elizabeth committed suicide, a tragedy described in detail in the Lancasater Weekly Intelligencer. This weekly issue reproduced news from the previous week; this article originally appeared on Friday:[8]

The grieving widower was left with three small children, ages five months, one year and nine months, and 2 years and eleven months. It is not clear with whom the children were placed, or where Albert Martin went. His obituary states, "He was a farm laborer, employed in the vicinity of Herrville for many years."[9] The 1890 City and County Directory reported him at Smithville, Providence Township, a laborer. [10] The 1900 Census reported him in Pequea Township, Lancaster County, with his mother and daughter as follows:[11]

Line Name Related Race Sex Born MS B FB MB Occupation
40. Martin, Albert head W M Sep 1855 Wd PA PA {A day laborer
41. Martin, Ida daughter W F Jan 1885 S PA PA PA
42. Gochenauer, Mary mother W F Mar 1836 S PA PA PA housekeeper

Son Henry, age 17, was boarding with Aaron and Mary Groff at East Drumore Township, Lancaster County, and was working as a blacksmith doing coach work.[12] Son Frank, age 16, was boarding with Henry and Emma Andrew at Providence Township; he was attending school.[13]

Albert moved to Lancaster about 1903.[14] His children all married about this time, Henry in 1903, Ida about 1903-4, and Frank in 1905. In 1910 Albert was living in a small hotel in Lancaster, and working as a packer in a tobacco warehouse.[15] By 1916 Albert was living with his son Henry in Lancaster.[16]

Albert Martin died in 1923. His obituary provides some information on his life:[17]
