STEPHEN7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, about March 1810 a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Falley Woodmansee, and died at Westport, Bristol County, on 1 December 1884.[1] He married first at Dartmouth on 9 April 1829 CLARISSA WHALON.[2] She was born at Dartmouth on 15 December 1810, a daughter of Daniel and Hannah Whalon.[3] He married second (intentions at Dartmouth on 28 October 1842) MATILDA (REED) BOOTH.[4] She was born at Massachusetts on 8 December 1811 and died at Westport on 13 April 1883.[5] Matilda had previously married (intentions at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 2 April 1831) ROBERT BOOTHE.[6]
Stephen Reed grew up on the family homestead in the Town of Dartmouth, the second of thirteen children. His siblings had not all been born before he left home. In fact, Stephen'd first child was born before his last sibling. Stephen, at age nineteen, married Clarissa Whalon, age eighteen. Clarissa's sister, Harriet, was already married to Stephen's brother, Philip; in this way the two extended families drew closer together. Stephen farmed in Dartmouth. The 1830 Census reported the Stephen Reed family in Dartmouth, consisting of two persons in their twenties, one male and one female.[7] In 1840 the census found the family had grown. The census list of persons in categories of age and sex, set beside what we otherwise konw of the family, looks like this:[8]
age and sex category | possible identity |
male 30-39 | Stephen, 30 |
female 20-29 | Clarissa, 29 |
female 5-9 | Harriet, 8 |
male 5-9 | Jephthah, 6 |
female 5-9 | Cynthia, 5 |
female 0-4 | Sarah, 3 |
female 0-4 | unidentified |
Stephen's wife, Clarissa, died probably about 1841-2. What is the basis of this statement? Stephen published his intentions to marry again in October of 1842. According to the 1850 Census he had a child, Asa, age 8, or born between 1 June 1841 and 31 May 1842. If Asa was the child of Clarissa, she died after that child's birth (perhaps in childbirth) and before Stephen's second marriage. However, there is no further record of Asa. The next oldest child of Stephen, and, presumably Clarissa, was born in 1836; so, if Asa is not her child, and to be explained in some other way, she at least lived to 1836.
Stephen Reed married as his second wife Matilda (Reed) Boothe. They published their intentions to marry at Dartmouth on 28 October 1842; I have not found a marriage record. Although her maiden name was Reed, I have found no connection to the family of Lemuel and Falley or to Lemuel's grandparents Thomas and Anna. Together they had a large blended family. Stephen Reed, 32, brought to the family Harriet, 11, Jeptha, 9, Cynthia, 7, Sarah, 6, and Asa, 1; Matilda, 30, brought to the union Betsy, 10, William, 9, Ann, 5, and Sarah, 1. They lived in Dartmouth, the births of their children being reported in Dartmouth or nearby Westport, until 1849. Based on the birth places of their children, they moved between 1847 and 1849 to Dighton, Bristol County, a rural community just south of Taunton, Bristol County. The 1850 Census reported the blended family at Dighton:[9]

The occupation of "furnace man" might sound out of context to our 21st century ears. Some iron was mined in the Taunton area and it would have been processed at an "iron furnace."
The Stephen Reed family still resided at Dighton at the time of the 1855 Massachusetts State Census,[10] and the birth of their last child in 1856. However, by the 1860 Census they were living at Taunton, where Stephen farmed. The decade of the 1850s saw the marriages of the children by their previous marriages. Harriet Reed and Betsey Boothe married in 1851, Anne Boothe in 1853, William Boothe and Cynthia Reed in 1854. The 1855 Census reported son Jephthah Reed not far away, evidently boarding with another family;[11] he married in 1858; Sarah Boothe and Sarah Reed both married in 1859. By the time of the 1860 census, all of the children from their previous marriages had left, and the household consisted only of Stephen and Matilda and the five surviving children of their union, ages four through fifteen.[12]
By the time of the 1865 State Census, the Stephen Reed family had moved to Westport, where Stephen farmed. They would remain in Westport the remainder of their lives.
Son Robert married in 1866; son Nelson and daughter Clara both married in 1869. The 1870 Census reported Stephen and Matilda at Westport, he a farm laborer, with only two remaining children at home.[13]
In 1880 the Census reported Stephen Reed, 70, farmer, and his wife Matilda, 69, at Westport. Their youngest child, George, 23, was reported with them; his occupation was: sailor.[14]
Matilda Reed died in 1883 from cirrhosis of liver; Stephen died the following year from apoplexy.[15]
HARRIET REED (1831-1907) married John Blanding, who farmed in New Bedford.[16] Of their children:
Dr. Clarence H. Beetle Was to Have Married Mrs. Grace Hacket Today Berkeley, March 26--Dr. Clarence H. Beetle, resident physician of Roosevelt hospital, who was to have been married tomorrow to Mrs. Grace Hacket, a trained nurse, died today of internal hemorrhages following an operation. He was 28 years old, a graduate of the Cooper medical college of San Francisco and well known in Berkeley fraternal circles. Arrangements for his wedding were nearly completed when he fell ill. It was believed he would recover and the nuptials would take place as planned. Then he grew worse and an operation became necessary. His death was not expected and his fiancee is prostrated. Doctor Beetle was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Beetle of Elmhurst, Oakland. He was a brother of Iva B. Beetle, Stephen E., Louis L., Beth L. and Gladys L. Beetle. He was a member of Berkeley lodge No. 1002 B. P. O. E., and of Court Oakland No. 46, Foresters of America. . . . |
Harriet and James Beetle's son Stephen was a civil engineer who had his own dredger and worked in the San Francisco Bay area.[22] Louis began as a boat builder, then worked in lumber yards in Vallejo, Solano County, California.[23] Elizabeth became a dental nurse, in Oakland.[24]
JEPHTHA REED (1833-1904) lived at Taunton in 1860, but the rest of his life in Dighton. He was described as a sailor in the 1870 Census, worker in a paper mill in 1880, and grocer in 1900.[26]
CYNTHIA REED (1835-1855). Died six months after her marriage, from consumption.[27]
SARAH REED (1836-1919) married Henry Cady, a pedaller.[28]
ROBERT REED (1845-1892) became a furniture dealer. His sons, Robert, Clarence, Harold and Roswell continued in the furniture business. The son Robert moved to Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island; the other brothers remained in Fall River, Bristol County. Their sister Grace married Henry Whitehead and they moved to Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island, where he farmed.[29]
NELSON REED (1847-1906) was reported as a butcher at Taunton in the 1870 Census. Sometime between a birth of a child in Taunton in 1875 and the 1880 Census he had moved to Fall River, where he engaged in the furniture business. Some time after his wife's death in 1900 he moved to Florida, where he died in 1906.[30] Concerning the children of Nelson and Sarah Reed:
Oliver Cherry was born in Ontario to Joseph and Agnes Cherry, farmers. In the 1881 Canadian Census Oliver was listed as the youngest of seven children in the family.[34] The second oldest child, William, came to America, as did Oliver. We find them in the 1900 Census in Fall River:[35]
Line | Name | Related | Race | Sex | Born | MS | B | FB | MB | Occupation |

The record also indicated that they hed come to the United States in 1894, 1896, 1897 and 1895, respectively.
This band of young entrepreneurs founded a department store which would later take the name Cherry and Webb. The enterprize looked upon the year 1888 as the date of its founding; however it was not incorporated as Cherry and Webb until 1922. According to the 1928 Fall River City Directory, the officers were: William S. Cherry president, Oliver M Cherry vice-president, Frederick Webb treasurer.[36] From the anchor store in Fall River the enterprise expended over the years to fifty-one locations in cities in the Northeast. Cherry and Webb was sold in 1963 to the Outlet Company, and went out of business in 2000. Over the years it would provide employment to a number of members of the Cherry-Reed family.
The death of Matilda (Reed) Cherry was reported in the Boston Herald:[37]
Fall River, Dec. 18--Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda M. (Reed) Cherry, 70, wife of Oliver M. Cherry, president of Cherry and Webb Department store here, will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 in her home, 623 Madison Street. Mrs. Cherry, who died Sunday night, had been active in civic and welfare organizations in the city. She had been treasurer of the women's club for 26 years and was a member of the Fall River Historical Society, a trustee of the Home for Aged People, women's board of union hospital and a member of the board of managers of the Women's Union. A native of Fall River, she was a member of the First Congregational Church and Benevolent Society of that church. She was graduated from Durfee high School and Bridgewater Normal School. Besides her son she leaves one son, Nelson R.; and one daughter, Mrs. John K. Hutchings.

Their son, Nelson, was treasurer of Cherry and Webb in 1940.[38]
CLARA REED (1849-1921) married Andrew Trafford, and they lived in the Dartmouth-Westport-Fall River area, where Andrew worked as clerk in a store (1870), retail grocer (1880), and bat manufacturer (1900). After Andrew's death, Clara was reported in the 1920 Census with her daughter Abby in California.[39] Their children dispersed:
Well Known in Field of Literature, Connected with English Department for Many years Williamstown, Feb. 18--Byron Johnson Rees, professor of English Literature at Williams college, died here this morning. He was the son of Seth Rees Cook and Hulda Johnson Rees and was born at Westerly, R. I., September 30, 1877. He attended school at Vassalboro, Me., and later the Friends school in Providence, R. I. He entered Brown University in 1895, remaining there until 1898, when he transferred to Harvard university, receiving the bachelor degree from that institution, cum laude, in 1903, and his master's degree with honors in English in 1904. In April, 1899, he was married to Edith Chapin Trafford of Dartmouth and is survived by his widow and to three children, Edith, Clara and Hulda. In 1904 Prof. Rees was called to Williams college as instructor in English, being advanced to assistant professor in 1907 and became professor of English literature in 1914. The year 1910-11 he spent at Oxford university on sabbatical leave. Devoting himself to the glory of English letters, Prof. Rees published the edition of Thoreau's "Walden" in 1910, "Nineteenth Century Letters" in 1919, and at the time of his death "Modern American Prose Selections" was in press. He was also a contributor to "Dialect Notes," being considered an expert in dialect characters of New England. He was a member of the Delta Psi fraternity and also of the St Anthony club of New York city, of the Williams club of the modern language association, and of the Faculty club at Williamstown. His familiarity with good literature was profound and his taste was unerring. furthermore he possessed the rare gift of inspiring his students with his own power of discrimination. Many Williams men of the past 15 years owe to him their enthusiasm for letters. Students and colleagues alike respected him, admired him and loved him.

In 1830 Edith lived at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, with her daughter Hulda, who was atrending college. In 1940 Edith was living in New York City, New York County, New York, with her two daughters, Edith and Clara, who both worked at the public library.[43]
EMMA REED (1851-1890) married Leander Borden, a mariner; she died at the age of thirty-eight, without children.[44]
GEORGE REED (1856-1918), the yougest child of Stephen and Matilda Reed, stayed at home with his parents after all the other children had left. The 1880 census called him a sailor. Five years after his father's death, at the age of thirty-three, he married. His family lived in Fall River, where the 1900 Census called him a bill collector.[45]
