LEMUEL B.6 REED (Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 26 October 1787 a son of Anna Reed,[1] and died at Dartmouth on 5 June 1849.[2] He married before 1808 FALLEY WOODMANSEE. She was born at Dartmouth on 21 February 1787, a daughter of James Woodmansee and his wife Mary Beden. She died at Dartmouth on 8 June 1876.[3]
When Lemuel Reed was born, his mother was not married, and the identity of his father is unknown. Before Lemuel's second birthday his mother had married James Gifford, 2nd, and within a year Lemuel had a half-brother, Philip Gifford. When Lemuel was six, his mother and step-father had a daughter. I find no further references to either mother or daughter. When Lemuel was fourteen, his step-father married widow Rhoda Sisson, who brought four step-siblings into the family. By the time Lemuel was twenty-one he had married Falley Woodmansee.
Tracing Falley's family background is more difficult. According to her death record she was the daughter of James and Mary Woodmansee. James Woodmansee and Mary Beden were married at Dartmouth in 1789, two years after Falley's birth. Mary Beden was born in Dartmouth in 1755, a daughter of Richard Beden, Jr. In 1825 Mary (Beden) Woodmansee gave to Lemuel Reed property which she had received from her father in 1802 and 1803. The fact that Richard Beden gave property to his daughter, not his son-in-law, indicates that she may have been widowed by that time. I have found no record of the death of James Woodmansee or the births of any children. This limited information suggests that Falley may have been an only child, raised for part of her childhood by her widowed mother.
There is one other wrinkle in the data. James Woodmansee of Dartmouth and Anne Loraine of Swansea published their intentions to marry at Dartmouth on 27 September 1787. There is no record of the marriage actually happening, either at Dartmouth or Swansea. These intentions were published seven months after Falley's birth. We can speculate or imagine what happened here. However, the connections of Falley to Mary Beden are clear, both from her death record and the land transfer. I am guessing that this contemplated marriage of James and Anne never happened.
Lemuel and Falley lived all their lives in the northwest section of the Town of Dartmouth, on what is now called Reed Road. There they farmed and raised their thirteen children.
Through the years, Lemuel and Fally accumulated more land, and sold some, as follows:
The full text of the deed by which Mary Woodmansee granted land to Lemuel B. Reed is informative:

This document indicates that Mary Woodmansee was being cared for, probably in the household of, her daughter and son-in-law.
The 1820 Census reported the Lemuel B. Reed family in Dartmouth.[11] Before 1850 censuses did not record the name of each individual, only the name of the head of household, and the numbers of persons in various age and sex categories. The 1820 census, with the possible identities of the persons, follows:
age and sex | possible identity |
female 45+ | Mary Woodmansee, 64 |
male 26-44 | Lemuel, 34 |
female 26-44 | Falley, 35 |
male 10-15 | Philip, 12 |
male 10-15 | Stephen, 10 |
male 0-9 | Willard, 7 |
male 0-9 | Allen, 5 |
female 0-9 | Anna, 3 |
male 0-9 | Royal, 2 |
female 0-9 | Mary Ann, 1 |
The 1830 Census reported the family at Dartmouth,[12] with the following categories and possible explanation:
age and sex | possible identity |
female 70-79 | Mary Woodmansee, 74 |
male 40-49 | Lemuel, 42 |
female 40-49 | Falley, 43 |
male 15-19 | Willard, 17 |
male 10-14 | Allen, 15 |
female 10-14 | Anna, 13 |
male 10-14 | Royal, 12 |
female 10-14 | Mary Ann, 11 |
male 5-9 | Warren, 8 |
male 5-9 | Lemuel, 5 |
male 0-4 | Rodney, 4 |
male 0-4 | George, 2 |
female 0-4 | Lavina, 1 |
This must have been a very energetic three-generation household. The grandmother, Mary Woodmansee, was still in the household. The two eldest sons had left. Philip Reed was reported at Dartmouth, a household consisting of a man and a woman in their 20s, and two boys under 5. We know of Philip and his wife and their son Philip; the other boy is not identified. Stephen Reed was also reported at Dartmouth, a household of a man and a woman in their 20s, which can be accounted as Stephen and his wife.
The 1840 Census again found the Lemuel B. Reed family in Dartmouth,[13] with the age and sex groupings and possible explanation as follows
age and sex | possible identification |
male 50-59 | Lemuel, 52 |
female 50-59 | Falley, 53 |
female 20-29 | Anna, 23 |
female 20-29 | Mary Ann, 21 |
male 15-19 | unidentified |
male 15-19 | Warren, 18 |
male 15-19 | Lemuel, 15 |
male 10-14 | Rodney, 14 |
male 10-14 | George, 12 |
female 10-14 | Lavina, 11 |
female 5-9 | unidentified |
male 5-9 | Andrew, 7 |
Grandmother Mary had passed away, and the four oldest sons had married and left home. Stephen and his family were reported in Dartmouth; Willard and Allen in Westport; Philip and Royal do not appear in this census.
When Lemuel Reed died in 1849 he did not leave a will. Therefore his property belonged to his widow and children collectively. By law, one third of his estate would be set aside for his widow - the widow's "dower." The remainder would be divided among the thirteen children. Son Philip's creditors wanted to be paid, and brought pressure to have action taken. The court ordered an inventory of the estate to be taken, and it was returned on 7 August 1849. Lemuel Reed left a homestead farm of approximately 200 acres valued at $2933.00, and a total estate of both real and personal property totalling $3570.93.[14] His estate included:
Following the inventory, the widow's dower was set off, and accepted on 6 November 1849.[15]
On 15 June 1850 the remainder of the property was partitioned among the heirs, and it was granted by the court the following 6 August.[16] The document of partition set the bounds for the property of each child:
The 1850 Census reported the family of Fally Reed at Dartmouth as follows:[17]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |
39. | Fally Reed | 63 | F | $1000 | MA
4o. | George H. Reed | 21 | M | farmer | MA
41. | Andrew H. Reed | 16 | M | farmer | MA
42. | Anna Tripp | 33 | F | MA | |||
1. | Lavina W. Tripp | 21 | F | MA
2. | Andrew M. Tripp | 33 | M | sailor | $1100 | MA
3. | Peleg N. Tripp | 30 | M | sailor | MA |
Fally still had her youngest two sons at home, taking care of the farm, and two daughters, who had married brothers, Andrew and Peleg Tripp, sailors, who may not have been at home at the time. Of the other children, Allen, Royal and Warren each headed their own family in Dartmouth, Willard and family were in Westport, Stephen in Dighton, and Rodney in Chilmark, on Martha's Vineyard. Son Lemuel had died in 1849, and his widow and son lived in Chilmark. I cannot find with certainty Philip and Mary Ann in this Census.
The 1860 Census reported Fallie Reed, 74, living in Dartmouth with her son-in-law, daughter, and grandson, Andrew Tripp, 42, mariner, Anna Tripp, 41, and Peleg Tripp, 10.[18] Fally's daughter Lavina had died and her widowed husband had married Lavina's sister Mary Ann. Royal Reed also had died. Otherwise, the children of Lemuel and Fally were reported in the 1860 Census as follows:[19]
Name | Residence | Occupation |
Philip | New Bedford | stone cutter |
Stephen | Taunton | farmer |
Willard | Westport | farmer |
Allen | Dartmouth | farmer |
Anna Tripp | Dartmouth (with mother) | wife of mariner |
Mary Taber (widow of Royal Reed) | Acushnet | wife of farmer |
Mary Ann Tripp | Dartmouth | wife of mariner |
Warren | Fairhaven | stone mason |
Sophronie Look (widow of Lemuel) | Chilmark | wife of farmer |
Rodney | Chilmark | farm laborer |
George Henry | Dartmouth | farmer |
Andrew | Dartmouth | farmer |
The 1870 Census found Falla Reed, 83, living in a four generation household in North Dartmouth, which included her daughter, Anna Tripp, 53, her son-in-law, Andrew Tripp, 52, mariner, her grandson, Peleg Tripp, 20, working on a farm, Peleg's wife, Julia, 18, and Fally's great-granddaughter, Cynthia, age four months.[20] The rest of Fally's children were dispersed as follows:[21]
Name | Residence | Occupation |
Philip | Fairhaven | stone mason |
Stephen | Westport | farm laborer |
Willard | Westport | farmer |
Allen | Dartmouth | farmer |
Anna Tripp | Dartmouth (with mother) | wife of mariner |
Mary Gelatt (widow of Royal Reed) | Fairhaven | wife of farmer |
Mary Ann Tripp | Dartmouth | wife of farm worker |
Lydia Reed (widow of Warren) | Westport | mother of cotton mill workers |
Sophronie Look (widow of Lemuel) | Chilmark | wife of farmer |
Rodney | Chilmark | laborer |
George | Westport | farmer |
Andrew | Dartmouth | common laborer |
Falley (Woodmansee) Reed died at Dartmouth in 1876, at the age of eighty-nine, from old age.[22] She and Lemuel had thirteen children, and, by my count, seventy-one grand children. Lemuel and Fally were buried in the small family cemetery near 645 Reed Road, Dartmouth. A listing of Dartmouth burial places describes it thus:
Surrounded by a substantial stone wall, the Reed family cemetery is not far off Reed Rd. in property that once belonged to the family. Access is gained through a wooden picket gate, but the overgrowth inside now is nearly impenetrable. In the past, the cemetery suffered extensive vandalism . . . there is a deeded right of way. [23]
Lemuel B. Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee had the following children:
Sophronie and Cyrus had the following child:
