ANNA7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1) was born at Massachusetts on 7 February 1817 a daughter of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee, and died at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 19 June 1882.[1] She married at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 29 May 1849 ANDREW M. TRIPP.[2] He was born at Westport, Bristol County, on 1 December 1817, a son of Otis and Cynthia Tripp. He died at Dartmouth on 14 December 1886.[3]
Anna Reed grew up on the family farm in Dartmouth, the fifth of thirteen children. When she was thirty years old she married thirty-one year old Andrew Tripp, brother of Caroline (Tripp) Reed, the wife of Anna's brother Allen. Andrew's brother Peleg had married Anna's sister Lavina, and after her death would marry Anna's sister Mary Ann. One week after Anna's marriage to Andrew Tripp, Anna's father died. The 1850 Census reported Anna, Lavina, and their spouses with their mother and their two youngest brothers still at home:[4]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Occupation | R.E. | Birthplace | Other |

2. | Andrew M. Tripp | 33 | M | sailor | $1100 | MA
3. | Peleg N. Tripp | 30 | M | sailor | MA |
Andrew and Peleg may not have been at home on dry land at the time, but this was their residence.
Andrew Tripp engaged in the whaling industry. The Whaling History website lists the following voyages of an Andrew M. Tripp:[5]
Vessel | Rig | Port | Departure | Return | Position | Destination | Other |
Juno | brig | New Bedford | 9 August 1840 | 1841 | res. Westport, age 17
Canton Packet | bark | New Bedford | 9 December 1841 | 1845 | 3rd mate | Pacific | 1/70 |

Globe | bark | New Bedford | 9 June 1862 | 1864 | 1st mate | South Atlantic | res. Westport, age 44, light skin, brown hair |
Globe | bark | New Bedford | 12 June 1865 | 1868 | res. Westport, age 47, height 5' 8 ½", light skin, brown hair |
The Andrew M. Tripp who sailed on the Juno would appear to be about five years too young to be our Andrew. The Andrew M. Tripp on the Elizabeth is 23 years too young. However the sailor on the Charles, and the two journeys of the Globe are the right age to be our Andrew Tripp. The sailors on the Canton Packet and Rebecca Sims could be our Andrew M. Tripp, indicating a rising in the ranks. The fractions in the right column are the sailor's salary, calculated as a proportion of the profits of the journey. Between the return of the Charles and the departure of the Rebecca Sims Andrew Tripp would have had time to marry and conceive his only child.
In 1860 Anna (Reed) Tripp, 41, resided in Dartmouth (North Dartmouth Post Office) with her husband, Andrew, 42, mariner, their son Peleg Tripp, 10, and her mother Fallie Reed, 74.[6]
Peleg married in 1869, and the 1870 Census reported a four generation household in Dartmouth:[7]
Line | Name | Age | Sex | Race | Occupation | R.E. | P.E. | Birth |
4. | Tripp, Andrew M. | 52 | M | W | mariner | $2100 | $4000 | MA |

The record also reported that Cynthis had been born in January.
Falley died in 1876. Andrew by 1880 had settled on land as a farmer. Peleg's family was expanding, creating a larger three generation family reported in the 1880 Census in Dartmouth:[8]

Anna died in 1882 from "softening of the brain." Andrew died in 1886 from "disease of the heart."[9]
Peleg A. Tripp, the only child of Andrew and Anna (Reed) Tripp, grew up on the farm in North Dartmouth. His father was out to sea more often than in port during Peleg's growing up years, so he was raised primarily by his mother and grandmother. Peleg married, at the age of nineteen, the seventeen year old Julia Lawton. They were married three months short of fifty years, and had ten children, nine of whom reached adulthood. Peleg chose to stay on solid ground, and farmed most of his adult life. Sometime between the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Peleg retired from the farm and moved with his remaining family to the city of New Bedford.
Malintha died in 1890, at the age of sixteen, from dropsy.[10] Charles married in 1895, Cynthia in 1896. The 1900 Census reported Peleg Tripp, 50, farming in Dartmouth, with his wife and seven remaining children at home.[11] Daughter Cynthia was reported at New Bedford with her husband George Merritt, and his parents, Haskel and Harriet Merritt, where they farmed.[12] Son Charles Tripp lived in Westport with his wife and one child, where he worked as a teamster.[12]
In the decade between 1900 and 1910 the children were leaving home. Mary married in 1900, Helen in 1902, Allison in 1904, Andrew in 1909 and Elsie in 1910. The 1910 Census reported a much smaller Peleg Tripp family residing on 427 Mill Street in New Bedford:[14]

Blanche was reported still attending school. The other children were reported in this census in their own homes:
Julia (Lawton) Tripp died in 1919. The 1920 Census reported widower Peleg Tripp at the Mill Street address in New Bedford, with his two youngest daughters, still single. Florence, 28, worked as a book binder; Blanche, 26, worked as a stenographer in a cotton mill office.[21] Of the other children:
Anna Reed and her husband Andrew Tripp had the following child:
