RODENY R.7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 6 September 1825 a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee, and died at Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts, on 2 October 1894.[1] He married at Chilmark on 6 November 1846 PRUDENCE W. COTTLE.[2] She was born at Chilmark on 30 October 1828, a daughter of Francis and Sophronia Cottle. She died at Chilmark on 19 October 1907.[3]

On 6 November 1846 Lemuel Reed married Sophronie Cottle and Rodney Reed married Prudence Cottle. Two brothers from Dartmouth married two sisters from Chilmark, and they settled down together in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard. Lemuel and Sophronie had a son, Lemuel, in 1846. Lemuel the father died in 1849, age 25, from dysentery.[4] The 1850 Census reported Rodney and Prudence and their two children, and Sophronie and her child, living together in Chilmark:[5]

The following year Sophronie (Cottle) Reed married Cyrus Look. The 1860 Census reported the two families in Chilmark with only one other household between them.[6]

Of the children, Lemuel, Cyrus, Sophronia, Francis, Rodney and Harriet were all attending school.

Sophronia, the daughter of Rodney and Prudence, married in 1866, but they and their first child were reported living with her parents in the 1870 Census; the Look family constituted the next entry:[7]

The following decade brought much change. Harriet married in 1873, Francis in 1874, Jerusha in 1875, and Rodney in 1877. Lemuel, the son of Sophronie, also married in 1877. The 1880 Census reported from Chilmark:[8]

Rodney Reed, Sr., and Francis Reed were laborerers. Onslow Stewart, Rodney Reed, Jr., Hiram Poole, and Cyrus Look, Jr. were fishermen. Lemuel B. Reed was a fisherman and blacksmith. Jared Mayhew and Cyrus Look, Sr., were farmers. Albert Reed was a well driller, as was the man with whom he boarded

The following twenty years saw the children establishing their own families, but none moved very far from home. Martha married in 1884, Prudence in 1885, Albert about 1885-6. Lemuel Reed died in 1889 from consumption,[9] without children. His widow married Charles Norton three years later and they had three children. Emma married in 1890; that same year Rodney Reed's wife Sarah died. The patriarch of the family, Rodney Reed, died in 1894 from a celeberal hemorrhage;[10] Cyrus Look, who had married Rodney's sister-in-law, died in 1896.

Prudence (Cottle) Reed died in 1907 from valvular disease of the heart.[11] All of the family remained on Martha's Vineyard, many living in close proximitry, except for Hannah and Hiram Poole, who moved to Fairhaven, Bristol Couinty, some time between the 1910 and 1920 censuses.

Rodney Reed and his wife Prudence Cottle had the following children:
