GEORGE HENRY7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Massachusetts on 1 November 1827 a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee, and died on 6 March 1893.[1] He married at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, on 27 November 1851 SUSAN A. BAILEY.[2] She was born at Rhode Island on 15 February 1829, a daughter of Sarah Bailey. She died on 12 March 1898.[3]
George Reed was born and grew up in Dartmouth, Bristol County, the eleventh of thirteen children. His family was already in transition; his oldest sibling had married before George was born.
George and Susan married when he was twenty-four and she twenty-two. They lived together forty-one years before his death. George and Susan were reported living at Dartmouth in the 1850 Census, and the birth record of a child in 1852. However they resided at Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts, in 1857 when their twins were born. In the 1860 Census they were back in Dartmouth. The birth record of a child in 1861 and the 1870 Census reported them at Westport, Bristol County. However the birth record of a child in 1872 placed them in Fall River, and the 1880 Census placed them at Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island. Most of these records described George Reed as a farmer, however birth records of children in 1852 and 1857 called him a laborer, and a birth record in 1872 called him a teamster.[4]
Susan and George Reed had nine children. However, their fourth child, Henry, died at one year, and one of their twins died at the age of two years. Seven lived into adulthood
The 1880 Census reported the family at Tiverton, including many working young adults, as follows:[5]

The record also indicated that George was disabled by diarrhea at the time of the census. Susan's father's birthplace was listed as "unknown," because the identity of her father was unknown.
The two decades following the 1880 Census brought much change to this family. Royal married in 1881, Emma about 1883-4, John in 1884, Franklin about 1886-7, and Annie about 1891-2. George, the father, died in 1893, William married in 1896, and Susan, the mother, died in 1898. Concerning the children of George and Susan:
Royal Reed married at the age of twenty-nine, and lived only ten more years. The 1880 Census had called him a fisherman, according to his death record he was a watchman. All of their children born while he lived were born in Rhode Island, probably Tiverton. When George died, he left his wife, age thirty-five, with children aged 8, 7, 6, 5, 1, and another on the way.
According to the 1900 Census, Ella (Whitehead) Reed lived in Fall River with her children, where she and eldest daughter Mary worked as bakers. According to that census, Ella had a total of eight children, six of whom were living; however only five children were reported in the home.[6] Mary married later that year and Maud married in 1908.
The 1910 Census reported Ella Reed at Fall River with four children at home. According to this record, Ella had nine children, seven of whom were living. Of the children at home, Ella, 25, worked as a laborer in a roller shop, George, 23, was a teamster for a roller shop, Helen, 19, was spooler tender at a cotton mill, and Lila, 17, was a trimmer at a cotton mill.[7] Daughter Mary lived in Tiverton where her husband, John Martin, worked as a loom fixer for a cotton mill; they had four children.[8] Daughter Maud lived at Fall River, where her husband, Harold Dennis, worked as a teamster, expressing; they had one child.[9]
The 1920 Census reported that both of the daughters of Royal and Ella that had married, had divorced. Mary (Reed) Martin had moved to Fall River with her four children. Son Frederick Martin, 19, worked as a fireman in a cotton mill; son George Martin, 17, worked as a coverer in a roller shop; the other two children were in school.[10] Maud (Reed) Dennis and her son Leroy were also in Fall River.[11] Ella (Whitehead) Reed, 63, also resided at Fall River, with her daughters, Ella, 34, Helen, 29, and Lila, 27. All three daughters worked for a roller covering business, Ella as a clerk, the other two as cementers.[12]
The 1930 Census found Ella Reed, 75, at Fall River, accompanied by her single daughter, Ella Reed, 45, who worked as a bookkeeper for a roller cover shop, and her grandson, Leroy Dennis, 21, who did carpentry, cabinet work.[13] Ten years later this threesome continued living together with the same jobs.[14]
John Reed, married at the age of twenty-nine, and died at forty-two. John and Ida (Fish) Reed lived at North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode island, when their first two children were born. At death, John left his thirty-eight year old widow with children ages 9, 8, and 1.
Widow Ida (Fish) Reed lived in North Kingstown according to the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Besides her children, some members of her family of origin were present.[15] In 1930, Ida Reed, 70, lived at Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island, with her two unmarried daughters: Lena, 40, was a stenographer for an iron foundry, Bessie, 30, was bookkeeper for an insurance company.[16] The ages given on this report should not be taken as precise, as they are all rounded. Her son, Arthur Reed, had married and moved to Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, where he worked as a house painter.[17]
Frank Reed married and lived in Tiverton, and worked for a cotton mill as a clerk (1900), shiopping clerk (1910), and laborer (1920).[18] In his later years, Frank, his wife and two children moved to Waterford, Caledonia County, Vermont, where he and his son farmed.[19]
Annie Reed married James Lake, a steam boat captain. They lived at Fall River (1900) and Tiverton (1910). They had two children, both of whom died in infancy.[20]
Emma Reed married Edwin Sanford, a sea captain. She had four children, three of whom survived infancy.[21] Emma died in 1909 at the age of forty.
William Reed married and lived at Fall River and Westport, working as a night watchman (1900), teamster for a chemical warehouse (1910), and foreman at a cotton mill (1920).[22]
George Reed and his wife Susan Bailey had the following children:
