ANDREW ROBESON7 REED (Lemuel6, Anna5, Thomas4, William3, James2, William1 ) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, about 1832-3[1] a son of Lemuel Reed and his wife Fally Woodmansee, and died at Dartmouth on 13 April 1898.[2] He married first at Fall River, Bristol County, on 28 May 1854 BARBARA E. WORDELL.[3] She was born at Dartmouth on 13 March 1834, a daughter of Stephen and Rebecca Wordell. She died at Dartmouth on 24 March 1860.[4] Andrew married second at Dartmouth on 10 September 1860 HARRIET F. MORSE.[5] She was born at Fairhaven, Bristol County, about April 1840, a daughter of Albert and Adeline Morse. She died at Dartmouth on 23 August 1874.[6] Andrew married third at Dartmouth on 30 July 1876 SYLVIA B. (HEAD) JAY.[7] She was born at Dartmouth on 3 September 1847,[8] and died at New Bedford on 6 January 1919, a daughter of Frederick and Abby Head.[9] Sylvia had previously married at New Bedford, Bristol County, on 8 May 1868 JAMES A. JAY.[10] He was born at Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on 29 April 1849, a son of Charles M. and Mary A. Jay.[11]

The thirteenth and last child of Lemuel and Fally Reed, Andrew Reed was born after his two oldest siblings had already married. He grew up on the family farm in northwestern Dartmouth. Andrew was sixteen years old when his father died. As the 1850 Census indicated, Andrew remained on the farm with his mother. Andrew and his brother George were farming. Two older sisters who had married sailors were also in the household.[12]

Andrew Reed married Barbara Wordell in 1854. They had a daughter later that year. In 1856 they had a son who lived thirteen months and died of dropsey on the brain.[13] In 1860, Barbara gave birth to another on March 16; eight days later she died; eight days after her death, the son died. The 1860 Census (1 June) reported Andrew Reed, 26, farming in North Dartmouth, his daughter Josephine, 5, attending school, and Ann Gifford, 20, probably helping around the house.[13]

In September of 1860 Andrew Reed married Harriet Morse. The 1870 Census reported Andrew and Harriet at North Dartmouth with their two children, and his child by his first wife:[14]

Harriet (Morse) Reed died at the age of thirty-four from inflamation of the bowels.[15] Andrew Reed, widowed for the second time, had in his care his nineteen year old daughter by his first wife, and his and Harriet's eleven year old daughter and five year old son. Two years later he married his third wife. The following month, Josephine, his daughter by his first wife, married.

The 1880 Census reported Andrew Reed, 47, doing mason work and farming, living at Dartmouth, with his wife, Sylvia, 33, and his son by his second wife, Lemuel, 12.[16] Daughter Josephine (Reed) Rogers lived at New Bedford with her husband, Wilson Rogers, a sailor.[17] Daughter Harriet does not appear in this census, and married two years later.

Andrew Reed died in 1898. The 1900 Census reported Sylvia Reed, 52, farmer, at Dartmouth, with her step son, Lemuel Reed, 28, farm laborer.[18] Lemuel married in 1904.

The 1910 Census reported Sylvia Reed working as a housekeeper for John Nickerson, of Dartmouth.[19] Lemuel and his wife lived in Dartmouth, where he farmed.[20] Josephine (Reed) Rogers, now widowed, lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Josephine and William Allen, at New Bedford. William worked in an eyelet factory.[21] Sylvia (Head) (Jay) Reed died in 1919 from a cerebral hemorrhage.[22]
