CONRAD1 ECHTERNACH was born at Wöllstein, Hessen-Darmstadt, on 14 December 1776 a son of Andreas Echternach and his wife Anna Barbara Corell. He died at Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 26 June 1838 . He married MARIA MARGARETHA WILDT, a daughter of George Wildt and his wife Anna Elizabeth Echternach.[1]

My information on Conrad and Maria is limited to material posted on the find a Grave website under his name at Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery by Rooster Keenan, which reads as follows:[2]

A native of Germany. Son of Andreas Echternach & Anna Barbara Corell, baptized on Dec 15 1776 in Wollstein. Husband of Maria Margaretha Wildt (daughter of Johann Georg Wildt & Anna Elizabetha Echternach). Father of Anna Maria (who married Paul Wirth, both also in this cemetery), John (in this cemetery), Christina, Margaret, Magdalena, & Catharine.

I cannot determine when he came to America, except that it was some time before his death. I do not know if he came as a widower or if his wife accompanied him (No burial marker for her has been mentioned). His eldest daughter married in Germany and had three children before coming to America. As Conrad's death date is the same as the date of immigration for his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, Conrad may have come to America, a widower, with his daughter's family, and died soon after his arrival. But nothing is proven.

Conrad Echternach and his wife Maria Margaretha Wildt had the following children:[3]

  1. ANNA MARY2 ECHTERNACH b. at Hessen-Darmstadt on 1803.
  2. JOHN2 ECHTERNACH b. on 5 February 1805; d. on 29 September 1869; m. on 1 March 1838 MARIA (POTTS) HASTINGS, b. on 2 January 1809, d. on 16 January 1865, child of Joseph Potts and Fanny Eshleman. Maria had m(1). on 20 March 1828 STEPHEN HASTINGS b. 2 November 1799, d. 19 April 1832.
  3. CHRISTINA ECHTERNACH.
  4. MARGARET ECHTERNACH.
  5. MAGDALENA ECHTERNACH.
  6. CATHARINE ECHTERNACH.

ANNA MARY2 ECHTERNACH (Conrad1) was born at Hessen-Darmstadt on 4 March 1799 a daughter of Conrad Echternach and his wife Maria Margaretha Wildt. She died on 1880.[4] She married PAUL WIRTH. He was born at Hessen-Darmstadt on 4 March 1799 and died at Strasburg Township on 13 February 1855.[5]

Paul Wirth and Anna Mary Echternach were both born in the German state of Hessen-Darmstadt, or so they stated in the 1860 Census. During the years of their childhood this area was disturbed by wars, between French revolutionary and Napoleonic forces on one side, and Imperial Habsburg forces on the other. Paul and Anna married in Europe, and had three children before emigrating.

Paul and Anna Mary came to Pennsylvania in 1838[6] with three children. They settled in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, where they farmed, and soon had three more children. The 1850 Census reported them as follows:[7]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. Birthplace Other

2. Wert, Mariah 47 F Germany
3. Wert, Jacob 18 M Germany

6. Wert, Paul 6 M Lancaster Co. school
7. Kendig, Mary Ann 23 F Germany
8. Kendig, Mary Ann 2 F Lancaster Co.

The Andrew Shaubach family was reported on the same page of the census, consisting of Andrew Shaubach, 23, Christiana, 22, and Anna, 9. Christiana and Anna were children of Paul and Anna Wirth. I cannot identify the Kendig family in the above census record, but Emma Kendig would still be in the household ten years later.

The 1860 Census reported Jacob and Martha married and living in nearby Strasburg Township and Christiana still in West Lampeter Township. I have not been able to trace daughter Catherine Wirth. The Paul Wirth family was reported at West Lampeter Townahip as follows:[8]

Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
Paul Wirth 61 M farmer $2500 $500 Hesse Darmstadt
Mary Wirth 57 F Hesse Darmstadt
Anna Wirth 19 F PA
Paul Wirth 17 M PA

The 1870 Census reported Paul Wirth, 71, Ann, 67, daughter Ann, 28, and farm hand Philip Decker, 13, at West Lampeter Township. Paul was farming; he and Anna were both reported born in Hessedarmstadt.[9] This entry was followed immediately by the family of son Paul Wirth. The census taken on 1 June 1880 reported the family with the same four members; Paul was still farming; his wife, here called Maria, suffered from a "nervous disorder."[10] Later that year she died. Anna, the last of the children to settle, married about 1881-2. Paul Wirth, the father, died in 1885.

Paul Wirth and his wife Anna Mary Echternach had the following children:

CHRISTIANA3 WIRTH (Anna Mary Echtenbach2, Conrad Echtenbach1) was born at Hessen Darmstadt on 29 December 1829 a daughter of Paul Wirth and his wife Anna Mary Echternach . She died on 28 January 1898.[16] She married about 1849-50 ANDREW SHAUBACH.[17] He was born at Hessen Darmstadt on 29 August 1826 and died at Pennsylvania on 19 December 1889.[18]

The main source of information for this web page is a genealogy prepared by the Shaubach family, which used to hold annual reunions at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Father's Day. This document of 13 legal size pages, mimeographed, produced about 1950, was distributed to family members. It traces all descendants, not just those with the surname. It begins:[19]

The record of the family begins with the accounts of four brothers. Two of these, Henry and Andrew, settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A third brother went somewhere to the western part of the United states, but no further information about him is available. A fourth brother (whose name may have been Martin Schaubach) remained in Germany where he died. His widow and six children subsequently came to the United States about the year 1860, settling in Brooklyn, New York.

This document describes the origins of Andrew Shaubach:[20]

This progenitor, being one of the original brothers, who came to America, was born in 1826 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, near the beautiful Rhine River. He learned the trade of tanner during his boyhood days. He migrated to America in 1844 at the age of eighteen years. He came to his brother Henry in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He hired himself as a farm hand with Henry Musselman of Strasburg with whom he remained several years, learning the details of farming. He was naturalized as an American citizen on October 9, 1852. In the meantime, he had purchased a small property in the vicinity of Herrville, [Pequea Township] Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, comprising 37 acres. Later he sold this place and farmed on the shares until he was able to buy a farm of his liking comprising 152 acres located in Strasburg Township in the said county of Lancaster near the village of Refton. He died an accidental death on December 12, 1889.

According to an address given by Samuel Wenger at the Shaubach reunion in June, 1984, Andrew Shaubach was a Mennonite; before coming to America he lived in Bad Kreuznach, Palatinate.[21]

The census taken on 1 June 1850 reported that Andrew and Christiana Shaubach had married within the past year. They were aged 23 and 22 years respectively, both born in Germany, Andrew was a laborer. This record listed Anna Shaubach, age 9, in their household.[22] This was, in all probability, Christiana's sister, Anna Wirth. They appear on the same page of the census as Christiana's parents.

The 1860 Census reported this family in West Lampeter Township as follows:[23]

Line Name Age Sex Occupation R.E. P.E. Birthplace
9. Andrew Shaubach 33 M farmer $1000 Hesse Darmstadt
10. Christiana Shaubach 31 F Hesse Darmstadt
11. Aron Shaubach 10 M PA
12. Rheuben Shaubach 6 M PA
13. Ferdinand Stoll 28 M laborer Wertemberg
14. Catharine Snell 18 F Hesse Darmstadt

"Aron" is a misunderstanding for "Amos."

The 1870 Census reported this family farming in Pequea Township (Willow Street Post Office). The census taker mistakenly reported everyone's birthplace as Pennsylvania:[24]

Line Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth
31. Sharbauch, Andrew 45 M W farmer $4500 $210 PA
32. Sharbauch, Christiana 43 F W keeping house PA

36. Sharbauch, Andrew 6 M W PA
37. Sharbauch, Margaret 1 F W PA
38. Pickel, Sarah 19 F W domestic servant PA

Reuben, Annie and Andrew were all attending school.

The 1880 Census reported the family farming in Strasburg Township. Eldest son Amos had married in 1876 and resided on his own farm. Another child, Martin, had been born and was five years old in the census; otherwise the family remained the same.[25]

Andrew Shaubach and his wife Christiana Wirth had the following children:
