DAVID6 SUNDAY (Andrew5, Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob2, Hans Adam1) was born at Steuben Township, Steuben County, Indiana, on 2 January 1859 a son of Andrew Sunday and his wife Mary Ritter, and died on 26 June 1932.[1] He married at Steuben County on 11 November 1878 C. JEANETTE SPIGELMIRE.[2] She was born at Wayne County, Ohio, on 13 January 1862, a daughter of Henry Spigelmire and Charlotte Bernard. She died at Salem Township, Steuben County, on 7 March 1934.[3]
David Sunday was the third of eight children, but the eldest of the four children who survived into adulthood. They grew up on a farm in Steuben Township. When David was eleven years old his father died, leaving his mother Mary, 34, with David, 11, Mary, 5, Della, 2, and Henry, seven months.
David, age 19, married Jeanette, age 16, in 1878. The 1880 Census reported David Sunday, 21, farming in Steuben Township, with his wife, Nettie, 18, and their son A. I., born the previous October. Also with them was Emanuel Ritter, 44, farm laborer,[4] perhaps a relation of David's mother. The son "A. I." is always referred to by his initials. I have not found any document to indicate for what the intiials stood.
After the birth of another son, Shirley, in 1882, this Sunday family had two daughters, each of whom lived less than a year, both buried at Mount Zion Cemetery, Steuben Township. Eight years after the birth of Shirley, Nettie Sunday gave birth to a third son, Earl, who survived.
The 1900 Census reported David Sunday, 41, farming in Steuben Township, with his wife, Jeanette, 38, and their sons Shirley, 18, and Earl, 9. David and Jeanette had been married 22 years; Jeanette had given birth to five children, three of whom survived, Shirley was working on the farm, and Earl attended school.[5] Son A. I. Sunday, 20 was reported a farm laborer in the household of Jefferson and Susie Mountz in Steuben Township.[6]
A. I. Sunday married in 1901, Shirley in 1902, and Earl in 1909. The 1910 Census reported David and Jeanette Sunday, ages 51 and 48, farming in Steuben Township. Living with them were their son Earl, 19, his bride of one year, Goldie, 19, and Jeanette's mother, Charlotte Sipgelmyre, 82.[7] A.I. Sunday, 30, was farming in Salem Township with his wife Maude, and their two children, son Clair, 7, and daughter Clela, 3.[8] Shirley Sunday, 29, and his wife Ethel, 27, lived at Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, where Shirley worked as a sawyer in a tank factory.[9]
By the time of the 1920 Census David and Nettie had left the farm, and moved to Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, where David worked as a teamster for the city. They had taken in three roomers.[10] The 1930 Census reported David Sunday, 71, and his wife Nettie, 68, at the same address in Lansing; David was a laborer for the municipality.[11]
David Sunday and his wife Jeanette Spigelmire had the following children:
