MARY CATHERINE6 SUNDAY (Andrew5, Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob3, Hans Adam1) was born at Pleasant Lake, Steuben Township, Steuben County, Indiana, on 26 June 1864 a daughter of Andrew Sunday and his wife Mary Ritter, and died at Clare County, Michigan, on 4 February 1949.[1] She married at Steuben County on 3 July 1880 THOMAS JEFFERSON HARTMAN.[2] He was born at Ohio on 27 July 1857, a son of John Hartman. He died at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, on 27 May 1939.[3] Kate and Jeff were often addressed by their middle names, but occasionally by their first names.
Mary Catherine Sunday grew up on a farm in Steuben County, Indiana, the sixth of eight children, but the second of four children to live beyond chldhood. When Kate was five years old her father died. Her mother, Mary, remained on the farm with her children. The 1870 Census, taken a little over three months after the death of Mary Catherine's father, reported the family at Steuben Township, consisting of mother Mary, 33, David, 12, daughter Mary, 6, Della, 3, and Henry, 1.[4] The 1880 Census reported Mary Sunday, 46, on the farm with Kate, 15, Della, 13, and Henry, 11.[5] David, 21, had married and lived in Steuben Township with his wife Nettie, son A.I., and a probable relative Emanuel Ritter.[6]
A month after the 1880 Census, Mary Catherines Sunday, 16, married Thomas Jefferson Hartman, 21. Kate had her first child at the age of 17, her second child at the age of 19, and additional children when she was aged 21, 24, 26, 29, and 37. According to the 1910 Census, she had nine children, seven of whom were living. The two who did not live were most likely born in the interval of eight years between her sixth and her last child. Based on the birth places of their children, the Hartman family moved to Clare County, Michigan between 1883 and 1885. The 1900 Census reported them farming in Arthur Township, Clare County; The next three censuses placed them in Grant Township, Clare County, where they farmed.
The 1900 Census record, which is faded and difficult to read, listed Jeff and Mary Hartman, their first six children, and John's father, also John Hartman.[7] William married in 1905, Pearl in 1907, and Maud in 1908.
The 1910 Census reported a smaller, but multi-generational household, consisting of Jefferson, 53, Mary, 46, son Glenn, 16, and daughter Carrie, 8. The household also included Bessie, 21, the wife of Pearl, and their son, Franklin, 1.[8] I have not found Pearl, William, or Claude in the 1910 Census. John Hartman, 22, worked as a hired man on the farm of William and Eva Hilborn, of Arthur Township.[9] One of the Hilborn children, Mabel May, 15, would two years later marry John Hartman. Maud, Jeff and Kate's fifth child, age 18, lived in Arthur Township with her husband. Roy Gordon, 23, and their daughter, Cecil, 1.[10]
By the end of the next decade, all of the Hartman children had married. Claude married later in 1910, John in 1912, Glenn about 1914-5. Pearl had divorced his first wife, and married again in 1917. Carrie married about 1919-20. The 1920 Census reported Jefferson Hartman, 63, farmer, at Grant Township, with his wife, Mary C., 55, daughter, Carrie Green, age 18 and married, a school teacher in public school, and their grandson, Franklin, age 10.[11]
The 1930 Census reported Jefferson Hartman, 72, farmer, at Grant Township, with his wife, Katie, 65, their daughter, Carrie Green, 28, her husband Ernest Green, 30, farmer, and their children, Leonel, 8, and Cleland, 7. Also present in the household, as he had always been, was Frank Hartman, grandson, 21, a salesman of wholesale baked goods.[12]
Thomas Jefferson Hartman and his wife Mary Catherine Sunday had the following children:
