The Family of Jacob Motsolf

FRANKLIN DAVID6 SUNDAY (Frederick5, Daniel4, Andrew3, Jacob2, Hans Adam1) was born at Kosciusko County, Indiana, on 11 July 1856 a son of Frederick Sunday and his first wife Lucetta Weller, and died at Leroy, Calhoun County, Michigan, on 4 February 1925.[1] He married first at Steuben County, Indiana, on 12 February 1878 EVA MOTSOLF.[2] She was born at Steuben County on 5 April 1856, a daughter of Jacob Motsolf and his first wife Cathrine Noll. She died on 14 January 1894.[3] Franklin married second at Steuben County on 1 January 1896 ELLA A. GOCHENOUR.[4] She was born at Scott, Steuben County, on 30 November 1876, and died at Battle Creek, Calhoun County, on 18 September 1927.[5]

Frank Sunday, the first of six children of his parents, grew up on farms in Indiana. The 1860 Census reported them at Steuben County,[6] the 1870 Census at Wabash County.[7] Frank's mother died when he was fourteen, and his father remarried when he was fifteen. His father and step-mother had three more children, only one of whom was born before Franklin's marriage.

Eva Motsolf, the fourth of seven children, also grew up on farms in Indiana; in 1860 in LaGrange County,[8] in 1870 in Steuben County.[9] Eva's mother died when Eva was seven, her father would raise the children on his own until his second marriage, when Eva was fifteen.

Franklin Sunday and Eva Motsolf married when both were twenty-one years of age, at Steuben County. The 1880 Census reported them at Salem Township, Steuben County, where Franklin was a day laborer, and Eva, keeping house, suffered from rheumatism.[10] Eva died in 1894, at the age of thirty-seven, leaving Franklin with four children, ages nine, six, four, and two. Two years later Franklin married Ella Gochenour. He was thirty-nine, she nineteen.

The 1900 Census reported Franklin and Ella at Pleasant Township, Steuben County, with Franklin's four children by his first marriage, and their first two children together:[11]

This document reported that Frank and Ella had been married fourteen years, and Ella had given birth to seven children, all still living. Carl was farming in Scott Township with his wife, Leona.[13] Beulah lived in Millgrove Township with her husband, Victor Wise, a butcher with his own shop. Their only child, Herschel, was two.[14] May lived in Greenfield, LaGrange County, with her husband, George Moffett, a farm laborer.[15] Worthy Sunday, 20, a hired man in the household of Fred and Mary Kimball, of Millgrove Township, worked out as a farm laborer.[16]

The 1920 Census reported Frank and Ellen Sunday farming at Sherwood Township, Branch County, Michigan, accompanied by their six youngest children.[17] Concerning Frank's other children:

The decade of the 1920s brought an end to the family of Frank and Ella Sunday. Lena and Joyce both married in 1923. Frank died in 1925. Clifford married in 1926. In 1927, Harold married on the eleventh of August, Martin married in the seventeenth of September. The following day, 18 September, Ella (Gochenour) Sunday committed suicide with self-administered lysol.[23] Six months later Russell, the last of the children to marry, married.

Beulah (Sunday) (Wise) Showalter had her second child, Betty Jean Showalter, in 1926. In 1930 they lived at Angola, where Clyde worked as an interior decorator, and Herschel Wise managed a gas station.[24] Clyde and Beulah divorced in 1935. In 1940 Beulah Showalter worked as a housekeeper in the home of her half-sister and brother-in-law George and Joyce Smith, Calhoun village and County, Michigan; Betty Jean was with her.[25]

May and George Moffett had moved to Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana, by 1930. In 1930 George worked as a moulder in an iron foundry, daughter Dorothy was a filing clerk at a medicine factory, and daughter Mary was a sales lady in a department store.[26] In 1940, at the same address, George worked as a buffer for a band instrument company, and son Raymond was an apprenticed horn maker for the band instrument company.[27]

William and Edith Sunday resided in Clinton Township, Fulton County, Ohio, in 1930, where William was a dealer in farm produce.[28] I have not found them in the 1940 Census. They both died at Pinellas County, Florida, in their later years.

Florence (Sunday) Atwood remained in California, where her husband worked for the railroad.[29]

Lina Sunday had married Donald Dickson in 1923. In 1930 they resided at Battle Creek, where Donald worked as a postal carrier.[30] By 1940 they had moved to Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, where Donald again worked as a postal carrier.[31] They remained in Oregon and died there.

Clifford Sunday, his wife and daughter, lived in 1930 at Sherwood Township, where they farmed.[32] In 1940 they had moved to Battle Creek, where they lived with their two children, and Clifford worked as a janitor at a machine shop.[33]

Joyce Sunday had married Burl Spooner in 1923. In 1930 they were farming at Newton Township, Calhoun County, and Joyce also worked as a binder in a printing shop.[34] Joyce and Burl divorced in 1936, and eleven days after the divorce Joyce married George C. Smith of Bakersfield, Kern County, California. In 1940 they resided at Calhoun village, where George worked as an implement salesman for a farm implement business, and Joyce was a sales lady for farm implements. Joyce's half-sister, Beulah Showalter, lived with them as a housekeeper.[35]

Harold Sunday married Vera Brott in 1927, and they lived in Calhoun County with their children. Harold worked as a truck driver of gravel in 1930 and a "county road driver" in 1940.[36]

Russell Sunday married Ina Bush in 1928, and they lived with their children at Emmett Township, Calhoun County. In 1930 he was described as grinder in a shop, in 1940 as laborer in a stove factory.[37]

Martin Sunday, his wife Edith, and their children, lived at Athens Township, Calhoun County, where they farmed.[38]
